Outline for the Critical Analysis of “The Story of An Hour” by Kate Chopin
I. They say "the truth shall set you free"; but is that really true? Mrs. Mallard finds freedom in the false belief that her husband is dead, and dies when she faces the truth. What does that really imply?
II. People must live a life of independence to maintain wellness in all aspects of life. Kate Chopin created “The story of an hour” to explore the importance of one’s confinement and freedom.
III. There are many examples in the story of an hour that illustrated the theme of confinement and freedom. Confinement was mostly implied but was majorly shown in the paragraph three; author Kate Mallard stated “Mrs. Mallard waited till the storm of grief had spent itself and she went away to her room alone. She would have no one follow her.” Mrs. Mallard had to confine herself before she could realize that the death of her husband was her one way ticket to freedom. As the story continued the author furthered inferred that Mrs. Millard’s felt trapped and her freedom needed to be unleashed. In paragraph eight author Kate Chopin started off by compering Mrs. Mallard’s thoughts of freedom with a suspension of intelligent thought. She then furthers off by stating that “Mrs. Mallard was beginning to recognize this thing that was approaching to possess her, and she was striving to beat it back with her will – as powerless as her two white slender hands would have been. When she abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under her breath: "free, free, free!"” This was when the concept of freedom took over Mrs. Mallard's body. She let the feeling of freedom possess her because could not help the feeling of being free at last.
