A Long Hour Many authors attempt to combine suspense, shock, and surprise in their stories but none do so as well as Kate Chopin in her short story, “The Story of an Hour.” Chopin had many great skills in the area of literary elements as well as literary devices in her short stories. Even though this story is very short, Chopin still manages to keep us interested in the stories plot. Chopin gives a clear exposition, rising action, climax, and denouement in only an hour in the story. Kate Chopin was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri and did not really start writing and showing her works publically until she was 34 years old. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband's death” (Chopin 756). Louise Mallard, the protagonist, has just been informed that her husband, Brently, had been killed in a railroad accident and is hit with great pain and sorrow. Later, she sits in her room, alone, looking out her window. She sees blue skies as well as “tops of trees that were aquiver with new spring life” (Chopin 757) and she smells the scent of approaching rain. She begins whispering, “Free! Body and soul free!” (Chopin 757). She starts imagining the years ahead of her and how she will be on her own and begins to feel ecstatic with the thought of her independence. Chopin establishes the plot very well which is difficult to do in such a small time frame. She gives a clear exposition which would be when she gets the news that her husband has died, and then events like, looking out the window and seeing blue skies and the smell of rain and then her saying that her body and soul are free lead to climax of the story; when Louise realizes that she will have a happy life with no one else to answer
