Arthur Miller’s The Crucible tells the story of Puritans in New England during the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. In Act I of the play, some girls of the village are seen “dancing in the woods” and partaking in devilish acts such as conjuring spirits in the woods. Then, the girls start claiming they had seen the spirits and names of other women in the village. This proves that rumors, lies, jealousy, and other dangers plague the villagers and serve as the base for this play. Abigail Williams, the 17 year old girl who acts as the leader of the afflicted girls, drinks blood in the woods in hopes of killing John Proctor’s wife and threatens to “come… in the black of some terrible night and… bring a pointy reckoning” to any of the girls who share

“The Crucible”, by Arthur Miller, is a play constructed around a Puritan society in Massachusetts where the concept of religion is portrayed as the main structure of civilization. In the Puritan society of Salem, the fear and distress of witchcraft is concealed by the anger of the townspeople, which derives from past animosities and vengeance. The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a historical play set in 1962 in the small town of Salem, Massachusetts. As you may know, you've all placed your trust in the words and actions of someone close to you. And what do they do? They betray you! It's rarely justified, and can happen to the best of us. Based on authentic records of witchcraft trials in the seventeenth-century this play explains how a small group of girls manage to create a massive panic in their town by spreading accusations of witchcraft. These rumors in turn are the causes that many citizens are hung for. This essay will show how the lies and betrayal of a few individuals eventually leads to the downfall of Salem and its society.
The Crucible is a play constructed on conflict, lies and deception, written by Arthur Miller in 1952. The key theme of this theatrical four-act drama is ‘Wheels within wheels’. Set in Salem, in the heart of puritan Massachusetts, in 1692, the plot follows a community of villagers plagued by accusations of witchcraft. Amidst the executions of their friends, the remaining villagers turn to religion, rumours and secrets to alleviate the tragedy, and gravity of the circumstances unfolding on their doorsteps. Throughout the play, we become progressively responsive to the fact that sex/sexual repression are the motives behind a significant volume of
The year is 1692. Throughout the small, Puritan, seaside community of Salem, rumors and accusations fly like gusts of ocean wind. Neighbors turn on neighbors, and even the most holy church-goers are accused of being the devil’s servants. The Crucible details this real-life tragedy of the Salem witch trials, in which nineteen members of the Salem community were hanged for alleged witchcraft. Abigail Williams, a seemingly innocent girl, accuses dozens of Salem’s citizens of witchcraft through the support of her mob of girls and the complicity of the court officials. The title of this play gives significant insight into the experiences of several of these Salem citizens. Although a crucible is often used in chemistry for heating up substances, the title of the play carries a much greater weight. In his famous play The Crucible, Arthur Miller uses the title of “crucible” to signify the severe and unrelenting tests of faith and character that many of the community members endure throughout the Salem witch trials, which he achieves through the use of figurative language and fallacies of relevance and insufficiency.
In “The Crucible”, the author, Arthur Miller, conveys what he believes Senator Joe McCarthy is doing during the Red Scare. The Salem Witch Trials were true events, while this play uses these trials and adds a fictional twist to show a point. Witchcraft was punishable by death during this time. Once names started flying in town it was like a chain reaction, people were accusing others of witchcraft because they were not fond of them or they had something they wanted. Some definitions state mass hysteria as contagious, the characters in this play deemed it true. In this play, innocent people were hung because some of the girls in town cried witch.

At the start of the play, the audience learns some girls were caught dancing naked in the woods by Reverend Parris. They had supposedly “conjured up spirits” and this led to the accusations of the girls as witches. In order to escape the punishment, they accuse other women of the town of being witches. They say that they were approached by the devil but did not go over to his side so they are used as members of the jury.
Arthur Miller’s The Crucible is a play based on the historical witch trials; this drama includes a chronicle that tells the account of a young woman, whom is in love with a married man, that accuses the masses of a modest village of necromancy. Miller distorts information given in the Salem witch trials to produce an exciting tale for the audience, but in doing so, The Crucible becomes an unreliable resource. Margo burns stated
Arthur Miller bases the play on the historical account of the Salem witch trials. Miller creates an atmosphere and mood within the play recreating the historical period of Puritan culture. The Puritans demonstrated their faithfulness, honesty, and integrity of physical labor. The Puritans did not tolerate inappropriate behavior. Those with inappropriate behavior were punished publicly and severely if needed.Miller’s exploration of human psyche and behavior makes the play an interesting masterpiece. On one hand, Miller addressed a particularly dark period in American history a time which people believed the devil walked the streets of Salem and could manifest in anyone. The play continues to affect audiences by allowing them to see how dark desires and hidden agendas can be played out.Abigail is a young woman who takes the opportunity to reverse fate, she had affair with Proctor so Abigail takes advantage of the chance to eliminate proctor’s wife by accusing her of witchcraft. The Putnam also seize the opportunity the royal charter was taken away in 1692 and land titles became invalid. One concept is capable of more destruction than almost anything else. It can change a person’s life, or end it. One of the many works written and driven by Puritan influence, The Crucible by Arthur Miller has continued to influence life and thinkings. Its story tracing the 1692 Salem Witch Trials has been widely read, received and understood, along with influencing the reader and their ideals. The play has manifested into more than words on a page and has become of the greatest influences, even sixty years after its publication. The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller to compare his own life experiences to the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. In The Crucible, young girls in Salem Village start to act strange. They blame their behavior on witchcraft and begin to accuse certain people they do not like or get along with of practicing witchcraft on them. Salem’s community is very religious and fears the Devil and his powers, the slightest suspicion of sorcery causes panic. Even without evidence against the convicted people, the community and court believe the girls’ claims and execute everyone that is accused of witchcraft. The Loudun Possessions are witchcraft accusations that take place in Loudun France in 1634. A nun named Sister Jeanne claims that she has been taunted and possessed by demons. A priest named Urbain Grandier is accused of forcing witchcraft upon her and is later ruled guilty and burned at the stake. The Crucible and the Loudun Possessions are similar because there are people convicted of crimes without court proven evidence and both have motives of revenge.
How can someone be so right yet still be wrong? Well as you can see its possible to be both about one thing. Everything is not always black and white, and right and wrong. There are some cases where both can be present in one situation. For example, someone who steals medicine for their sick mother. Is this wrong or right? Some can argue it one way but in their end, there will never be a right or wrong. “What if the medicine he stole was saved for someone else who was dying?”; “But his mother could’ve been dying.”, “But stealing is wrong under any circumstances and if he hadn’t stolen it and asked instead, maybe the mother could’ve sought better medical attention.” The arguments can go back and forth for ages but in the end, no one will be right about one thing. In The Crucible, Puritans go back and forth about who’s a witch and if God would like one thing or the other but in the end, they will never know what God wants. Now this is a different argument on how something can be both right and wrong because it is unknown. We will never know what he wants so how can the Puritans in The Crucible be right about what God wants from everybody. It is a struggle in the world today for everybody no matter how big or small the topic is to determine if that concept is right or wrong. Which is why there is war in the world today. War is caused by two or more opposing sides battling for what’s right or wrong when in reality we would never know without concrete evidence
