During Stratification monopoly each person was assigned to a social group. There were four different social groups which were middle class, lower class, upper class and the working class. I was assigned the lower class and I knew once the game started that I was going to have to work hard to stay in the game. Each person was given a different amount of money due to their social class. Being that I was in the lower class, I started the game off with five-hundred dollars, while the other members started off with one-thousand dollars or more. The social class placement that each member was assigned influence the outcomes of the game. Being the lower class person, it was very hard for me to make certain investments and then when I chose to make investments they did not work out for me. For example, I brought one of the railroads and then after that I landed on free parking and had to pay taxes. After a while I then had to sale my railroad to one of the other players to keep money. Then I landed on someone’s property and lost more money. I also knew the game was going to be difficult for me when I found out that the upper, middle, and working class had the option to move forward or back one. Due to my financial situation in the game and the investments I made, I was not able to improve my economic status. In fact, my economic status worsen and I bankrupt before the game ended. I landed on the other member’s property and had to pay taxes, which I did not have enough money to
Many questions have risen in this day and age in which ones wealth can greatly effect almost every aspect of their lives. There has been much controversy as to whether the recognition of socioeconomic classes are for the benefit of society as a whole. Socioeconomic class is defined as some combination of occupation, education, and income level (Heimer 802). A good society consists of equality, support for the government, educated individuals, better living conditions, and low crime rates. As research will show, socioeconomic classes contribute to social inequality, lower support for the government, subpar education levels, income insecurity for some classes, lower living conditions, trouble transitioning into adulthood, and higher crime rates. Therefore, socioeconomic classes are a detriment to society and do more harm than good for the people.
With a few minor adjustments to the monopoly game you can simulate stratified social classes within our society. The purpose was to see how successful each player would be in the game, the game was simulating a controlled life. Our class system is divided primarily into three groups. The three groups(classes) are upper, middle, and lower/working class.
The Davis-Moore thesis states that social stratification has good consequences for society. They argue societies may have different occupations or tasks that these jobs differ in their importance to society. They believed this encourages people to work harder and be more efficient in their jobs, ultimately benefiting society.
Individuals within a society are grouped into certain rankings that is based on their wealth, income, race and education known as the social stratification. Sociologist use this to determine the social standings of individuals within a society. Social stratification can also appear in much smaller groups. These groups such as the work place, schools, and businesses can “take the form of a distribution of power and authority down the ranks”. (Cole, 2017) The Caste system is also another form of stratification that one does not get a choice in. They are born into it and regardless of their talents will hold positions that are given to them their whole life. Social mobility is the ability for individuals to move about their social standings.
Economic stratification is the different rankings in social class are separated in different economic ways. These differences can vary from clothing, cars, perfumes, cigarette brands, etc. There are many ways you can tell what a person stratification is just by the way they look or the things they have. Usually these ranking go from lower class to middle class then the upper class. Each of these classes have very different ways of living and what they do to maintain a certain status.
I was in the second most wealthy group. We were suppose to start with a lot of food, but for some reason there was a mess up in the game and we got less. This relates to real life because if you’re born rich, then loss everything.
People are divided into different levels of social status according to their wealth. Wealth is usually associated with prestige, but not always. For example, a plumber makes more money than a professor, but a professor has more prestige than a plumber because a plumber is a blue collar worker. When coming up with the division between people there is a system that put individuals in place to categorize ones social stratification. Four major classifications of social stratification is slavery, caste, estate and class.
Class-divisions affect the society in many different ways. "Social stratification, [which are class-divisions,] are know as the division of a society based upon rank or class" (“social stratification”). Class divisions are usually based upon one’s wealth, influence, status, race, or gender. They have been here since the beginning of civilization and are going to continue. Throughout our society, class-divisions have caused many problems and lead into conflicts between different classes.
Marxists sociologists, such as Althusser, Bowles and Gintis and Willis argue that education operates in the interests of the ruling class and maintains capitalism. However, other sociologists oppose this by arguing that this is false and education is meritocratic.
In chapter 5, the author mentioned about how factors of race and gender help to frame elections, which these two important factor are the particularly stratification systems in modern America. According to the article, the author uses the quote as a demonstration, “Nicholas Winter notes that “race and gender are two particularly important stratification systems in contemporary America. Both define appropriate relationships among individuals and between individuals and groups, and both play important roles in structuring society, culture, and politics both today and throughout American (and human) history.” This is the case in both our understanding of the position of African Americans within society and our understanding of the position of
His distribution of the categories makes sense so his classification of the social class seems pretty accurate. However, I believe a person’s job is not the only thing that defines his or her wealth and social class. People can have inherited wealth from past generations and ancestors. Valuable goods also determine one’s social class. For example, in the United Arab Emirates and other Middle Eastern countries as well, a person’s wealth is determined by the amount of gold he or she owns. Woman in the Middle East wear a heavy amount of gold to represent their social status and their wealth. Another example is that in Kashmir, an extremely rural area, a person’s wealth is defined by how many cows and goats they own. Also, whether if they keep their animals healthy or
Social Stratification is considered to be a hierarchy of positions concerning economic production which influences the social rewards to those in the positions (Social Stratification, Definition Social Stratification, n.d.). There are two commonly known theories when it comes to social stratification, the functional theory, and the conflict theory. The functionalist believes that stratification is needed for society to enhance stability and motivate members of the society to work hard. According to the functional theory, inequality ensures that the most functionally important jobs are filled by the individual who has the best skills for the job.
America is known as the land of the free and home of the brave. When thinking of this you think about all the opportunities presented to people and all the freedom. An idea of America is that we’re a meritocracy, which means anyone can be able to to become anything they want as long as they work hard playing by the rules. Along with that many people believe that diversity will bring together the country and unite us all but that’s not the case. America is not a meritocracy.
Social stratification can be simply defined by stating that it is a system in which a society ranks categories of people in a hierarchy (Macionis, page 224). The concept of social stratification is based on four central principles, which are social stratification is a trait of society, not simply a reflection of individual differences, it carries over from one generation to the next, while it is universal, it is also variable, and social stratification involves not only inequality but beliefs as well (Macionis, pages 224-225). The first principle, that social stratification is a trait of society, not simply a reflection of individual differences, basically says that children born into wealthy families are more likely to be of good health, do well in school, succeed in a career, and live a long life (Macionis, pages 224-225). An example of this first principle can be seen in the what happened to the Titanic. The first-class passengers survived not because they were better swimmers than the second- and third-class passengers, but because of their privileged position (Macionis, page 224-225). The second principle states that the concept of social stratification is one that carries over from one generation to the next (Macionis, page 225). This concept is essentially stating that the social standing of a person is partially determined by their parents. Most people’s social standing remains constant throughout their lives (Macionis, page 225). While social stratification is
In today’s society the social classes are separated by four different social classes. The first being, the upper class which is only about 1 to 3 percent of the United States’ population, but all together they hold more that 25 percent of the nation’s worth. This class itself divides into two separate groups, the lower-upper and the upper-upper class. The lower-upper class is those who have ‘new money’, people who have acquired their wealth through business venture and investments and so forth. The upper-upper class is those who have ‘old money’, this includes the families that have been rich more many generations. These are
