Suicide Is Responsible For Nearly 4500 Deaths

Social media itself is a huge danger to society. It causes many suicides within the world because of the cyberbullying and spreading of rumors. “Recent studies have shown that one out of four teens have been the victims of cyberbullying and one out of six have admitted to having cyberbullied someone” (Trautner 1). The internet and social media is supposed to be used to communicate with friends and for searching information, “Kids use technology different than their parents do. Sometimes it is hard for adults to understand that this can even be a possibility” (Trautner 1). It is not supposed to be used to bully someone, especially not to the point where the victim would think about suicide. “One of the statistics that has been highlighted within this news coverage is the threefold increase in the suicide rate for girls ages 10 to 14. The rates for girls in this age group increased from 0.5 to 1.5 per 100,000 during this time period. Causes of suicide vary but as technology advances new causes are apparent. Social media plays a major role in causes of suicide. Technology allows cyber bullying to happen frequently and recur until something or someone stops it. Victims of bullying often think they have no way out of their situation or feel like there is no help. People with suicidal thoughts struggle either mentally, physically, or emotionally. “Three million children are absent from school each month due to bullying. Twenty percent of those bullied kids have suicidal thoughts” (Bullying and Suicide, 2016, p.1). Media’s such as snapchat, instagram, twitter, or facebook all provide factual information about previous cases of suicide. Cyberbullying is a serious problem especially among adolescent girls. Girls are more likely than boys to attempt suicide due to cyberbullying, because girls are struggling to find themselves as a person (Bichell, 2013, p. 3). Any form of negativity or put down affects them, and who they are trying to become.

A large sum of suicides are indirectly or directly influenced by experiences with online aggression. Suicide is not an uncommon result of tormenting through social media. “The psychological impact [of cyberbullying] can be devastating, and suicide is not unknown among young victims. For some victims, the damage to their sense of dignity and emotional well-being could persist for years." (“Jessica Mendoza”) The effects of online bullying are extremely harmful to children. Any child that is having suicidal thoughts from online bullying is a deeply harmed child. Suicide in teens is not uncommon either. Jennifer Holladay states, “Our study of upwards of 2,000 middle school students revealed that cyberbullying victims were nearly twice as likely to attempt suicide compared to students not targeted with online abuse.” Online abuse it a growing problem with the modernizing society. More and more people at younger and younger ages have more access online, and to social media. This increases the online abuse, and will lead to more and more suicides in teens

For every successful suicide, there are ten men and women who attempt suicide. And for every one of those, there are ten who think of killing themselves, but do not.(Some Reasons). The United States has never had a federal-centered approach for mental health care, entrusting its responsibility to the states. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death mostly in the age of 16-24. Suicide is becoming major issue in United States. Rate of Suicide in teenagers is rising day by day. I believe the people who commit a suicide are selfish people because they don’t think about their friends and family. When I was in my senior year a friend of mine, Jassey committed the suicide. A day before that we both were working on our government project, everything was great. Next day of school, I was in my math class, doing my warmup questions, and was not listening to our daily announcement. Suddenly I heard that Jassey had committed a suicide, it was shocking. He committed a suicide because he broke up with his girlfriend. His death was so depressing and shocking.

Suicide is the act or an instance of taking one’s own life voluntarily, a person who kills herself intentionally. In fact suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15 to 24 year olds and at least 90% of teens who kill themselves have some type of mental problem. Suicides among young people continue to be a serious problem. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for children. School bullying statistics in the United States show that one in four kids in the U.S. are bullied on a regular basis. A student is being or victimized when he or she is exposed negative action on the part of one or more student. Bullying remains one of the largest problems in school with the percentage of students,over most 13 million American kids, will be bullied this year. Noticeable effects of bullying are ongoing sadness, withdrawal from others, reckless behavior, rejecting to eat & lack of sleep. This is the primary reason why it is so important to put a stop to this behavior.

Suicide is a subject that is very hard for people to comprehend or understand why people result to it. Mental illness, bullying, and grief are just a few of the many causes of suicide.

As of 2016, suicide has replaced homicide as the second-leading cause of death among U.S. teenagers because of social media bullying. Social media has taken a significant toll on our society, one that affects millions of students around the globe. Every day, online platforms are gaining in popularity. So much that study now shows that the average person spends more time each day on their phone and computer than they do sleeping! Cyberbullying is a very depressing thing that can happen to a person. In an article, “Baby Rape Sparks Outrage”, Sameer Hinduja, states that “1-in-3 children say they are cyberbullied, and about 12 percent say they have bullied others online”, (The Press Democrat). Imagine if a family member comes home depressed and is scared to tell someone what is happening to them. It may be that they got bullied at school or on the internet but can not get help. If a student gets bullied and can not get help it will eventually lead them to think about suicide, since they can not get everything off of their chest. There are not many laws on cyber bullying, which means that this social activity is allowed. Anyone can open up any type of social media and start rumors or even make fun of anybody. In the article, two- twelve-year old were cyber bullying a female classmate. They wrote on the internet rumors that their classmate had a sexually transmitted disease, which was not true. Not only that but also called her names and even wrote threats to expose personal information. Unfortunately, the bullied twelve years old ended up hanging herself and the bullies were arrested. This article is devastating because there are people out there who will put a person down and the victim ends up committing suicide is very heartbreaking. Assume this was a close friend or even family member such as sister, brother, cousin and so on, does this not make humans think about their actions before committing them. If the intentions were something else like getting attention, then make sure that the person knows what will be posted online because they may not want to deal with social media. Cyber bullying is becoming a bigger and bigger problem on social networking sites. There have been quite a few teenage suicides in which cyber bullying seems to have played a role. In at least one case, the suicide of Alexis Pilkington, the bullying kept going on her tribute page even after her death. There is concern that the Internet is playing an increasing role in suicide. Youth who self harm or are suicidal often make use of the internet. It is commonly used for helpful reasons such as searching for support or for coping mechanisms, but it can exert a negative effect, standardizing suicidal behavior or preventing disclosure or discouraging seeking help from metal health professionals. The internet has created online communities that can be used as support, and communities that can be misused to bully peers. “Both cyber-bullying and general internet use have been found to correlate with increased risk of self-harm, suicidal ideation, and depression” (Daine K, Hawton K, Singaravelu V, Stewart A, Simkin S, et al., 2013). The Internet exerts both positive and negative influences on young people at risk of suicide.

Half of all young adults have been a victim of cyber bullying; that means that half of young adults are at risk of committing suicide as a result of using social media. Is the use of social media worth a life? By reducing the usage of social media by young adults bullying will decrease and the suicide rate will be reduced.
