Spain and England were some of the first people to settle in the new world, but did they do a lot of similar things or were they two whole different worlds? Even though Spain and England both found the new world, there are many differences in their colonies including the reasoning behind sailing, the way they treated Native American’s, and the length of time they stayed.
Spain never wanted to go and start new colonies in the new world, but rather just make the Indies a trade hub. Spain had seen how rich Portugal was getting in their trade route to the Indies, so Columbus wanted to find a faster route westward. Columbus had thought he found the new world, but had actually found Hispaniola. Columbus and his gang had called in people living in Hispaniola Indians, because they all thought they were in the Indies. The relationship with the Indians started out good, they traded with them hoping to get gold and riches like what they had heard the trade was like in the Indies. The relationship quickly changed after the Spain got tired of not getting their gold and riches, and the Indians attacking Columbus’ crew. Columbus started

People from England were trying to escape the church of England and get religious freedom. The Puritans were wanting to get out from under the rule of the Church of England and be able to pursue their religion. Pilgrim’s and Puritans had sailed across the ocean to make the settlement of Jamestown. When they got to Jamestown they wrote the Mayflower Compact. This document set up a “Civil Body Politic” to make laws, and create the government. The English were actually impressed with the Indians because they had farming techniques, and had also started trading with the Indians. The English then turned on the Indians, similar to what the Spanish did, and were going to take the Indians
One of the reasons was space. In that time England was extremely crowded and filthy. So a lot of British colonist came to escape the overcrowded, disease ridden, and filthy towns of England. Who when the first came over relied greatly on the natives of that area just to survive the harsh winters, because these settlers had no idea how to be self-independent. As more and more settler came across the atlantic, they began to push the native west which started to create tension between the two group. One specific group, the Puritans came over because they felt that the church of England corrupt and they want to escape and start a new more holy life in the new world. They were able to befriend a tribe of natives called the Wampanoags, which also helped the settlers survived the harsh New England winters. In Autumn celebrated the first thanksgiving. A strong indian tribe in the region called the Pequots hated the foreign settlers and the Puritans and the Peguot fought in a big war in which the Puritans came out on top, but not without casualties. For the most part the british and the natives were able to get along with some disagreement here and there but never like the french were with the natives up in
Because of this the pope require Spain to spread Catholicism around the Americas. The Spanish say that their main goal of colonization was to rescue the Indians from their barbaric ways, and to prevent them from becoming Protestants. They did not want to eliminate the Indians, instead they wanted to help change them into obedient Christians. Along with Spain's goal of
During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, New Spain and New France came to the New world for two different reasons. New France came to the new world in search of a new west passage and Spain came in search of gold and religious freedom. They both wanted to spread their religious beliefs through missionaries. The Spanish were the first to establish large settlements. The Spanish had over 200 cities by 1570. The French didn’t start colonizing until 1604. The first French colony was Acadia and Quebec which came years later in 1608. The Spanish had a huge head start on colonization over New France but they both thrived in their own ways by using Natural Resources and slaves.
During the 15th century, European ships started to travel the world, looking for resources for their Motherland. Despite being rivals, the English and Spanish developed similarities, but were predominantly different. The Spanish and English colonies were significantly different in their religious and economic views, but shared similarity in the treatment of indigenous people.
In the 17th century England and Spain were both in a race to settle the New World. After Christopher Columbus had reached this New World Spain almost immediately sent people over to explore and colonize. After the Treaty of Tordesillas secured their land, Spain’s empire quickly expanded across The Americas. England had a bit of a late start when it came to colonization. Even though their first few attempts such as Jamestown, and Roanoke were not very successful England kept at it. Eventually, England and Spain became the two most powerful nations in the Americas. Even though both nations had the same goal, their political, religious, and economic development were very different.
Basically the puritan and pilgrim were surfaced because of the wrongness happened in the Church of England. However this two groups reacted in a different ways in handling the problem. The puritans wanted the Church of England to make more reforms to get rid of all traces of the Roman-Catholic Church (non separatist). While the Pilgrims, not only they're against the Anglican Church but they also wanted to separate totally from the church (separatist).
When the Mayflower sailed over to the New World, on the boats were Puritans that were looking for a change in the way that their religion was practiced where the Chesapeake settlers came over for gold. Alongside the Puritans were the Separatists who
The settlers who established on the northern east coast were strictly searching for a land with religious freedom. The Puritans, followers of John Calvin, settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In England, they wished to purify the Anglican Church but were persecuted by King James I. The Puritans believed in well-ordered communities and families. They stressed education and the specific roles for males and females. The Pilgrims, or Separatists, founded Plymouth Colony and wrote the Mayflower Compact as a self government document by taking advantage of a loophole in their charter. This was the first self government treaty in North America. They believed that the English church was so corrupt that they had to establish their own independent congregations. As time passed, the New England settlements grew in population and diversity and split into different colonies such as Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and
The Puritans in Plymouth came with their whole families and most of the money made would go to England. In the 1620's religious turmoil had erupted in England so the Puritans established the Mayflower Compact in 1620 and went by majority rule. In Massachusetts the Puritans wanted to avoid slavery to keep from contaminating their religion meanwhile, other colonies thrived on it. For example, the colony of Virginia grew tobacco as their main cash crop and had indentured servants and/or slaves to help grow
The two English colonies had different reasons to settle; the New England colonies wanted religous freedom while the Chesapeake settled for economic reasons. In England the puritans were persecuted, so they sailed across the Atlantic so they could practice their religion. They made the Articles of Agreement (doc D) in which an order was that the people, “intend by God’s grace… to procure some Godly and faithful ministers with whom we purpose to join in church covenant to walk in all the ways of Christ.” They were strict and made a document to keep their religion in check. They wanted to build a “city upon
To begin, the colonies of Virginia and Massachusetts were established close together but were as created for two very different reasons. In 1606, a group of wealthy London businessmen petitioned King James I for a charter to establish a colony in the New World (Wood 2017). They proceeded to form the Virginia company and wished to establish a permanent English settlement in the Americas. The British competed with the Spanish who had established colonies in central America and stole vast wealth and treasures from the occupying natives The English were keen to find similar riches in the Northern part of the Americas. They also wanted to establish permanent settlements in the New World to stake the claim of the British government (Wood, 2017). Unsimilar to Virginia, Massachusetts was founded because of the pursuit of religious freedom. During the mid-sixteenth century, England underwent a Protestant Reformation. Following this, many people believed that the Anglican Church, the established state church in England, still retained too many vestiges of Catholicism, including Bishops and some religious ceremonies. The so-called puritans wished to purify the English church. In the early 17th century, some more radical Puritans began to leave England for Europe seeking freedom from the Anglican church, and its lost others began to explore the possibility of America as a refuge where they could create ideal religious communities. Then in September of 1620, the first group of Puritans sailed for America from Plymouth, England aboard the Mayflower under the leadership of Governor John Winthrop. The grant empowering the group to create a colony in Massachusetts was granted by King Charles 1 to the Massachusetts Bay Company (Kelly 2017).
The New England colonies came to the New World for religious freedom. Their religious groups consisted of Calvinists, Puritans, and Dutch Reformed. The Puritans were religious separatists from England. The Puritans left England because they believed that the Catholic Church wasn’t reformed enough. The Pilgrims were concerned with the “Dutchification of their children so they received permission from the Virginia Company to live and work in Jamestown. The Massachusetts Bay Company were non separatists that were still connected to the Church of England. They focused on
On April 26th, 1607, Three ships coming from England arrived at Chesapeake Bay. This was the start of the American Colonies. Upon arrival, Jamestown was established and had a population of 104 men and boys at first. The reason for the establishment of Jamestown was that the Virginia trading company was interested in finding gold and other resources, not so much over establishing a functioning society. Jamestown was a town built on tobacco and due to the importance of tobacco being grown, and due to the amount of fieldwork it needed, slavery was a necessity to farmers. Meanwhile over in Massachusetts, Puritan society was being formed. The Puritans wanted to convert people, including Native Americans, to Puritanism. Over time more people come
The Spanish colonies and New England were slightly similar and greatly different in terms of control by European government because of differences in supporting their European country and the acceptance
Mayflower Compact: The Puritans believed that the England Church was corrupt and morally bankrupt and left to America on the ship “Mayflower” to establish churches there. When they arrived at New England, they had inadequate provisions and many had died due to that, but by adhering to their compact they laid foundations for future settlers.
