My nature to serve attracts me to the Houston Methodist Summer Teen Volunteer Program. My goals are to gain experience and knowledge about careers in medicine, and to give back to the community. I would like to learn a lot about how people live by the ways they get hurt or how they deal with being sick. It’s a good study of human behavior because you see people at their highest and lowest extremes of emotion. To further my goal of pursuing a career in medicine, it is important for me to get hands on experience of serving people and executing work in a responsible manner. When a person donates their time, they give hope to someone who needs it. I feel that I will be also benefited because I get to see how my contribution has made a difference. …show more content…
I want to enhance my skills that include communication skills, ability to work with others, ability to take direction and lead others, dedication and time management. I believe that the Houston Methodist hospital will be able to provide me a place for this. Also, this is located in the Medical Center which is easily accessible to me during the summer time and hence I will be able to give full justice to this time commitment. Volunteering also will help me to learn about health care and how the hospital experience is different for different social classes of …show more content…
Through the many trips that my family has taken to the hospital due to various reasons, I have become fond of the hospital and its many wonders. After all the things that the medical field has done for me and my family, I decided to contribute to my local hospital to volunteer and help out those who pay visits to the hospital. Through my exposure to various clinical populations, I want to improve my ability to serve others in this capacity that can guide me towards the medical profession in the future.
I am hoping that I get exposed to what a doctor does and (1) see that it's not like the TV shows and (2) hope that I have conversations with the doctors that could provide me with an insight into what it really is to practice medicine. I want to see if I am really prepared to pursue a field of medicine in the future and am hoping the experience at the Houston Methodist hospital will help guide my desire. From what I have gathered from my family doctors, it involves a lot of hard work, determination and long hours. I want to be able to challenge myself and see if I am ready for this profession or not? I believe that my time volunteering should give me a good sense of how things are run
In my time volunteering at the hospital, I hope to gain many different experiences. However, there are a few main ones: adaptation through enrichment and dependability. First of all, I want to get to know and adapt to the environment of the hospital and learn how different processes work. This is a crucial part of being in the atmosphere of a clinic. Also, the experiences that I will have at the hospital will help me to understand the routines and entailments of the career I would like to pursue. I hope to become a Physician’s Assistant in the future and this will be the best way to know if it is the right position for me. This enrichment of my understanding will help guide my passion for this career path and hopefully strengthen it.
Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, represents a place of medicine and friendly faces. Anyone I know that has ever been to PVHMC, always reflects on the friendly environment that comes with the hospital. Around every corner is a smiling face and a pair of listening ears. The latter are just some of the reasons I wish to become a College Volunteer at PVHMC. From my time in high school as a student volunteer, I learned so much about the medical world, but I also learned even more about dealing with individuals in a time of need. Rather that time was during a family loss or the welcoming of a life into this world, I learned that being in the medical field, is much more than just coming to a diagnosis, because it’s the faces and the smiles and
One of the most important and favorite healthcare related experience for me is volunteering at the Houston Foodbank. I have done over 440 hours of volunteering at the Houston Foodbank. Saving peoples lives by filling their pantries and those who are in need for food has been a blessing for me to do. However, I am currently still volunteering and now a leader for the Student Heroes Program for the Houston Foodbank. Many have told me I could not be a leader too soon unless you are really dedicated to the program or you have to be a senior. Clearly then I have proved them wrong by being dedicated to the program. Helping people has been an honor to me and I really enjoy helping families in need for food. It makes me feel great to make people faces
I would love to participate in Lakeland Regional Health's Teen Volunteer Summer Program because I want the opportunity to learn more about my future career. By doing the Teen Volunteer Summer Program, I will be able to understand just how much my future Career encompass and get a heads up on what to expect. By volunteering in the summer program, I would also be gaining the amount of hours that I need to graduate high school with honors on my diploma. I hope that I am able to volunteer in this summer program to put all that I have learned in health class to good use.
I desire to be a Junior Volunteer at Pardee hospital to assist people, and attempt to learn more about what it is like to work at a hospital. I believe people working in the medical field the field need to be able to look towards the future. In the future I plan to major in biology, and hope to work in radiology when I get older. Volunteering at the hospital could potentially help me get into college. While I am currently a freshman at East Henderson High School I am trying to take classes, join clubs, and plan for getting into college later. I feel like I would be a good candidate for the volunteer program because I am responsible, and think about how my actions affect myself and others before I do them. I have strong listening skills, and
I would like to volunteer at Rutherford Regional Hospital because I am interested in learning what working at the hospital is really like. I want to be a Registered Nurse in the birthing center of a hospital or in the NICU. I want to know for sure that I’m completely capable of doing the job and working in a hospital setting before I officially decide. I have also been interested in medical work and I enjoy getting to work around people. Although the volunteer workers don’t get to do everything that I’d do as a nurse, it is still a great opportunity to learn and discover new things that I didn’t know about before.
By volunteering at a hospital, one can make up their mind on whether to be a doctor or to give up on that fantasy. Allowing our children to have options like these readily available will benefit the community and the child in the end, whether it’s on a college resume or when making life altering
Even though I have shadowed and volunteered in several departments for nearly two and half years, I feel that I can still learn more about how a hospital is run while giving my time as a
This summer I will be joining East Carolina University's chapter of Medical/Dental Brigades in Honduras. Much of the population in Honduras is living in poverty and therefore living conditions are poor and the country is extremely medically underserved. The Medical Brigades will have the opportunity to provide services that the population is currently not used to having for a whole week. While in Honduras, we will be working with members of the community and providing health care services in areas such as: triage, doctor consultation, dental, OBGYN, pharmacy, and more! Aside from providing health care, the medical brigades will also be participating in a public health project to help the community become sustainable. An example of this would
My mentor Yesenia Ordaz has been a volunteer in the pediatrics department of Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for six years. I have never met a more dedicated person who exemplifies what it means to serve and support a community. No matter what the situation was, Yesenia was always staying up to date with what the hospital needed, and how we could make the project serve those needs effectively. By observing Yesenia, I have learned that the best way to be a part of the hospital community, is to prioritize and serve the needs of the others before yourself. It seems obvious, but getting into the mindset of a hospitalized child can be complicated sometimes and remembering that every person has a slightly different perspective can also be hard to keep in
For my service-learning project I wanted to volunteer at an elementary school, but I couldn’t do it because I had to work as a volunteer in a retirement house. I’m preferred to look after children than elderly. First place that I chose was Villa Park but senior who live there are Spanish, they couldn’t speak English, so I decided to choose South Pasadena Convalescent Hospital as my place to do this project. I remembered how nervous I was when I went to hospital for the first time. I worried about their diseases that could be contagious. But during the past four weeks working at there, I had a great experience that I would never imagine.
Volunteerism positively reflects an individual's character, showing others of their benevolence and compassion. Organizations such as Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) as a whole is very community based, meaning we partake in and organize activities that positively affect the school, its students, and the rest of the community. As President of FCCLA, I participate in numerous community service and community awareness activities. FCCLA has done numerous community projects, such as food drives, coat drives, and toiletry drives, and eventually all of these items were given to the homeless whom we have also volunteered to feed. Moreover, the numerous volunteer opportunities that I have grasped have helped me to establish what career path I want to take in the future, nursing. Doing community service helped me realize that I want to spend my life helping others, doing things that could make a sick person’s day better and help them to stay positive as they heal.
Volunteering in college will allow me to professionally, grow confident with my major as I share my new knowledge of Occupational Therapy with others. Service hours will also offer me the chance to put into practice the knowledge and recent skills that I learn in the classroom. Alvernia’s community service requirement will allow me to personally grow and develop myself. So far in my life, my community service has mainly been only with children. At Alvernia I hope to push myself beyond my own boundaries and volunteer for groups of all ages. I know in the Masters Occupational Therapy program that students get the opportunity to complete hours at different centers, and are required to study with all of the different age groups. I hope to continue to spread myself out with all of the age groups. Although kids are enjoyable, it is still essential to be able to help each of the generations because there is always somebody who needs aid. Volunteering will also improve my interaction with adults. I used to be extremely shy and I was afraid to talk to new people, but talking with children was easier and it helped me to grow socially. I still am a bit shy, however I continue to develop my ability to interact with adults. With community service I hope to put myself into a situation where I can learn to be comfortable around all ages of people. I am thrilled to accomplish my goals at Alvernia
Volunteering in the medical/surgical department at PWFMC has been both insightful and rewarding. While volunteering, I interacted with patients of varying ages, ethnicities, disabilities, and the like. Most of my patient interaction involved helping patients in any way possible, which meant, more often than not, simply
I am sure I would greatly contribute to the world class health care at Mackenzie Health because I am a very hardworking and caring individual. Though I have many extracurricular activities, and am an engineering club executive member at my school; I always achieve excellent learning skills and had an overall grade 9 average of 93%. This shows that I have outstanding time management skills, pay attention to detail, and work hard to obtain my goals. These are important skills to have for any volunteer work but especially in a hospital because mistakes like delivering an item to the wrong room can mean it will take longer to cure a patient. Furthermore, I regularly volunteer at the Richmond hill spaghetti dinners currently held at the McConaghy
