Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is a novel set in the 19th century and is centered around the assumptions made and prejudices formed on the first impressions of the main characters. The characters must overcome their prideful and prejudiced attitudes in order to find true love and happiness. Austen had first thought to name this novel First Impressions because it was the first impressions of the characters that caused the initial prejudices around which the plot revolves. While this makes sense, overall, it is the consistent problems of pride and prejudice throughout the book to which readers can relate that has made the novel such a classic and, as a result, Austen chose the better title.Therefore, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is aptly named due to the assumptive attitudes formed by the main characters first impressions of one another making the second option, First Impressions, a very well thought out alternative title but the author's choice of title better alludes to depth of the emotional traits of the characters. Jane Austen named her novel Pride and Prejudice which truly captures the feelings and emotions that the characters must overcome to be happy and find love. Many characters in the book, such as Elizabeth and Mr.Darcy, have to deal with being overly prideful which causes them to for a prejudice against others at times. When Lizzy first met Mr.Darcy she formed a strong prejudice and dislike of him, along with others, because she saw him as too prideful
