An eleventh grader named Tom had to learn that if don’t stay awake in class you won’t learn anything so you won’t know anything.Tom was a relatively smart kid except when it came to his third block reading class. He would always fail to stay awake in there simply because he thought it was so boring. During his second block Tom would set a goal for himself to stay awake in his next class but he secretly knew he wasn’t going to endure this plan. When the bell rung Tom went to the restroom and splashed water on his eyes this time in hopes that this will keep him up for long enough. Little did he know the lesson for today was different than the usual. When he got to class he did his usual routine of chatting with his friends first and his peers would include a teasing of his daily naps he takes in the class, but Tom brushes it off while going to sit down when the teacher enters the room. “We are going to do something a little different today, we are going to read a book called The Whale by Herman Melville”, says the teacher. The class groans leisurely as the teacher passes out the vast books to the students Tom being the loudest. The teacher gives the class the assignment to read to themselves until the end of class. Tom starts to look around the room just watching everyone else open their books and start to read, then he hesitantly looks at his book with dread hoping that it would just grow legs and walk away. He figures that he might as well start so he opens the book
The origin of modern day whales, a mystery that has puzzled paleontologists for years, may have just been solved with the discovery of an ankle bone. This discovery might sound simple and unimportant, but the bones of these ancient animals hold many unanswered questions and provide solid proof of origin and behavior. The relationship between whales and other animals has proven to be difficult because whales are warm-blooded, like humans, yet they live in the sea. The fact that they are warm-blooded suggests that they are related to some type of land animal. However, the questions of exactly which animal, and how whales evolved from land to water, have remained unanswered until now.
Published in 1851, the story of Moby-Dick is not just the tale of one mans search for control over nature, but also the story of friendship, alienation, fate and religion that become intertwined amidst the tragedy that occurs upon the doomed Pequod. The crew itself are an amalgamation of cultures, from the cannibal Queequeg, to Starbuck, "a native of Nantucket." The Pequod can thus be seen as a microcosm for immigrants and whaling within America. In Moby-Dick Herman Melville examines both the exploitation of whaling and the reality of being born outside of America.
Due to his experiences a sailor, Melville commonly wrote his stories based on life at sea. His common theme of the sea attracted many literate people of the Renaissance. However, Melville´s common theme of life at sea is not the only factor which contributed to his style of writing. Herman Melville used many different rhetorical strategies to emphasize significance in many of his pieces. The use of similes, metaphors, and imagery supply Melville´s stories with various ways to describe certain characters or things. Alliteration, repetition, and onomatopoeia all come together to create specific effects on words and phrases in Melville´s works. The way Melville used parallel structure, malapropisms, and long, drawn out sentences reveals the variety of ways he has structured certain stories throughout his career. The rhetorical strategies used by Herman Melville are what made him the great Renaissance writer he was.
Moby Dick, a book about the voyages and pursuance of a white whale, was imagined by an incredible man. Herman Melville was a talented writer who wrote many fantasies and adventures, including Moby Dick. He’s most infamous for his work about the tale of the white whale and known less for his works of Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life and Omoo: A Narrative of Adventures in the South Seas. (“Herman
Orcas are complex social creatures deserving freedom and respect, not captivity in theme parks under the guise of public education and entertainment. Aquarium staffs say captive whales are priceless educational tools. However, people can educate their children by bringing them to the wild instead of bringing the wild to them at the expense of the Orcas health and well-being. "The price of a family admission ticket is what continues to drive this cruel spectacle," according to Michael O' Sullivan, the Executive Director of The Humane Society of Canada (Whales in Captivity, 2010, Para. 3). Orcas suffer in many ways in
For years the killer whale, also known as Orcinus orca, has been drawing the attention of the public through the entertainment industry. These marine mammals have been bringing in billions of dollars to amusement parks such as Sea World, but at what cost? An idea that these killer whales can live happily and content while in captivity may be going through the minds of the public, but this cannot be further away from the truth. To have such complex creatures in captivity is not morally correct and there are many points against it, such as their level of emotional competence, violence between the killer whales, violence of killer of whales towards trainers, shorter lifespans, physical harm, and their level of intelligence. After taking a look at how these creatures function and the conditions they are put in while in captivity, there is no question about whether or not these mammals should be kept in captivity; an experience such as this affects these marine mammals just about the same as it would affect a human because of their high highly developed emotions and complexity. Since these industries do not have a natural authority over these creatures no matter the cause, the best thing they could do for these killer whales is to stop capturing them and return those who are capable back to the wild.
With success come some of the greatest stories of how people got to that spot. If you do try for something almost never will you be rewarded for that particular thing. This plays a role in both of the following books. In Whale Talk TJ must give this team and swimming his all to get what he wants in getting his team a varsity letter. When new requirements set back the team from getting their varsity letter TJ take it upon himself to lead and set an example for the rest of his team. Notably, in the book Summer Ball after Danny finds out about what people actually think about him. He takes accepts it and goes harder in camp. He takes nothing for granted anymore.
Megan Bergman’s story “Yesterdays Whales” discusses a woman’s choice to have an abortion, which is a highly debated topic in today’s society. In 2015, 50% of the people in the US were said to be pro-life and 44% of people said to be pro-choice. Becoming pro-life means that you would believe a pregnant women must have the baby and that it would be wrong to abort it. Deciding to be pro-choice is not viewing someone negatively if they want to abort it. There are so many different opinions on the matter, which have changed throughout the years. Of course everyone has different opinions about it but whatever their decision is, they should be confident about it. People really should make decisions for themselves rather than letting others choose their fate. Just one decision could change your whole life in just one second. Although there is good and bad in choosing pro-life there can also be both in choosing pro-choice. Although there is controversy, Bergman does an excellent job portraying throughout her story that women should have a choice for their own bodies.
The Killer whale was put on the IUCN list in 1989, in 1969 Keanu Allen (a trainer) describes being threatened by young female Keanu, she would open her mouth and show him her teeth, 3 deaths had happened between human and killer, and 1 known fact between woman and killer is that a killer whale had killed its own trainer at SeaWorld's Shamu Stadium in Orlando,
After I read the article “Whale Done,” I found a few practical concepts that can help me develop skills as a “multiplier” leader. The article explains concepts about improving performance of employees by introducing Wes Kingsley, who goes to the SeaWorld, learns how to train employees with skills that are used to train whales. The first and most important step to train employees is to gain trust from them, and in order to build trust, leaders need to accentuate the positive by giving them more attention when employees correctly complete the task. On the other hand, when people do something that causes a negative result, the leader should ignore the it, and redirect them to obtain the desired result. Also, as employees realize more expectations
Comparative essay The two novels “Anne of Green Gables” and “Whale Rider” have various connections in their themes; both of them starts their tales with a girl. The gender inequality is a big issue for then, also now as well. People should bring more attention to this, this is very important to indicate, because the whole novels are also about them, about their personality, their family, their surroundings and what they do. And I will be talking about some of my thoughts like gender inequality and their personality etc in the space below.
Progress is key to living life, but if one is advancing through life with the motivation of revenge, then, in actuality, he or she is truly regressing. Revenge is an extremely corruptive trait. It causes people to do uncharacteristic things that normally would not be done. The perception of right and wrong is blurred and one takes inadvertent actions that may cost friendships, possessions, and even lives. Revenge is often a major motivating factor in the characters that are in the works written during the Dark Romanticism period. One of the most celebrated and influential American authors in history, Herman Melville, was born on August 1, 1819; his reputation was not quite
Food for the whalers was not as appetizing, many of the food that was described in the beginning of the story consist mainly of biscuits. The real life whale ships included salted meat, dray tea, coffee, sugar, and biscuits. The hard work of the whalers gave them a big appetite and would eat anything that was available. Sea horse was something that is also mention in the story, it is mainly heavily salted pork, beef, and horse. When the doctor and the narrator approach the ship, they gave them a bag that "turned out to be well filled with sweet cubes of salt beef and pork and a famous sailors' pudding, what they call "duff", made of flour and water, and the consistence of an underdone brick" (Melville 160). The food that was in the bad is
The novella “Billy Budd” by Herman Melville is a 1924 ‘sea story’ that has underlying allusions to Christ and the bible as pointed out by many critics. Many have found that Billy’s life resembles the plight of Christ, as well as Adam, while Captain Vere is meant to stand as God, and Claggart is left as the role of Satan. These underlying character molds ultimately contribute to the novella as a whole and explore the dilemmas of their Bible counterparts.
This book really grabbed me right from the beginning of the story. The story begins with the birth of fraternal twins, with the grandfather patiently awaiting the birth of the son. Right away I felt sadness when the mother and one of the twins die. The boy dies and the girl survives. The grandpa seems to not care about the girl who survived . He was longing for his grandson because he is from the Maori tribe and the tribe is waiting for the sign of a new chief to be born . The chief would lead the village and its community to greatness. Many elders have been born but none with the strength to be the next chief. The little girl was named Pai. The grandma of Pai took her home to raise her along with the grandfather. The grandfather showed
