In Stephanie Fairyington's essay, “The Gay Option”, the author expresses regret about the framing she used to explain her sexuality when coming out as a homosexual to her mother. She told her mother that her homosexuality was a result of biology and not choice. As a result, Fairyington's mother began to refer to her sexually as a birth defect. This in not the outcome Fairyington desired. She explains that her intent was to gain acceptance from her mother not pity. That experience lead her to conclude that the best course of action for the LGBT community should be for them to turn away from using biology to explain their sexuality but to look instead to an argument of choice. Fairyington explains that an argument of choice will force the rest
The well known multimedia personality, and Filipino veteran, Christine Bersola Babao, also known as TinTin, published an article called ‘Being Gay’ that went viral. On Monday, March 11, 2013, she published the article which shared what she learnt from her interview with the television psychologist, Camille Garcia, a catholic conservative on what to do when a child is showing signs of being gay or changing gender roles. Garcia and Babao both believed that it was wrong and unfortunate to have same sex relationships. But, publishing this article was a huge mistake for, it completely damaged her career. By publishing the article ‘Being gay’, a mother and multimedia personality, Christine Babao, damaged her career by
The history of the gay rights movement goes as far back as the late 19th century. More accurately, the quest by gays to search out others like themselves and foster a feeling of identity has been around since then. It is an innovative movement that seeks to change existing norms and gain acceptance within our culture. By 1915, one gay person said that the gay world was a "community, distinctly organized" (Milestones 1991), but kept mostly out of view because of social hostility. According to the Milestones article, after World War II, around 1940, many cities saw their first gay bars open as many homosexuals began to start a networking system. However, their newfound visibility only backfired on them, as
Her first supporting example is writing to her mom “I was born this way… if there were a straight pill, ... I’d swallow it faster than you can say the word gay,” (Pg. 50) She goes on to clarify that this was a tactic used in order to be accepted for her sexuality. Which, unfortunately, many another member of the LGBT community feel forced to use the “born gay pity” in order to feel even somewhat accepted and ease the concern that their “gay” is the fault of their parents. This is a great tactic using Pathos to not only appeal to her mother but also to the readers. She gets the readers to recognize some of the struggles and negativity from conservatives. Not just the Conservatives in her family but also the ones in Politics. However, it also shows how Fairyington could feel conflicted. Vouching for one thing and then feeling forced to say another, being gay is a choice… unless it's talking about it to people in Politics and or conservative family members. With Conservatives and in this case Fairyington family, the only real acceptance of being gay is by saying it wasn’t a choice but playing on their own idea of it being a biologic affliction.
Being gay in America is difficult. Being gay in America is even more difficult when you’re not quite gay. Being a closeted not-quite gay woman in America, surrounded by Indian immigrants is pretty difficult, too. It’s a bit like staring in a James Bond film, if all of the characters suddenly developed Bollywood accents, and marginally less homicide. Also, I may be exaggerating, because I don’t attract nearly as many Bond Girls, no matter how much I’d like to. Even understanding what “not-quite gay” means for me was and is a struggle. I suppose a common saying is true: if you can’t find the gay cousin in your family, then you are the gay cousin. And it’s true; in my jumbled mess of aunts, uncles, and third-step cousins once removed, there hasn’t been a single person to come out. Or, if there has, we certainly never talk about them.
Downing provides a great viewpoint on the meaning of homosexuality throughout this article. I never thought too much about homosexuality and how individuals in this group might feel in their position, but this article gave me an introductory understanding on the origin and how it came to be over the years. Homosexuality is still an unstable topic even in today’s society. Many people have varying views on the matter and conflicting opinions clash on a daily basis. I remember having many gay or lesbian friends in high school, but I never treated them any differently from anybody else. I think everyone has a right to choose the gender or person they are interested in, but this does not work out so easily in reality. Many people are afraid of coming out due to the
The “love revolution” has been progressing for quite a bit of time. It has changed the purpose of marriage greatly. Author Stephanie Coontz in the article, Gay marriage isn't revolutionary. It's just the next step in marriage's evolution, points out that “marriage was about property and power rather than love” accentuating how marriages were arranged by the parents in order to gain wealth or expand their labor force. Roughly two centuries ago, “people began to believe that they had a right to choose their partners on the basis of love” this is a pivotal moment, changing the whole entire meaning of marriage, no longer putting value on money for marriage (Coontz). Although the meaning of marriage changed, the patriarchy remained, it wasn’t until
It was 5 days before summer break at Ladue Middle School in St. Louis, Missouri. My friends and I were eating lunch at our usual place discussing who it would be to ask our Counselor Mrs.Worthington for a Gay-Straight Alliance. They all agreed that I should be the one to request it seeing as I was the one that was the bravest of the group when it came to Administrators, so I marched right up to the Counselor “Mrs. Worthington I was wondering if we could have a GSA next year”
She says in her argument that “Until homosexuality is cast and understood as a valid choice, rather than a biological affliction, we will never rise above our current status. We will remain Mother Nature’s mistake…” In this statement she refers to how the world see’s gays. Many believe that this is Mother Nature’s fault and some as a human decision. Homosexuals should not be treated as if they do not exist or belong. Although this behavior seems to be a choice, it is also looked at as being “Born this way”. In her argument she shows how being gay shouldn’t affect one’s human rights as if it were a religious belief or emotional attachment.
“The gay rights movement is not a party. It is not a lifestyle… It is not about sin or salvation. The gay rights movement is an integral part of the American promise of freedom” (Urvashi Vaid). Many people were not supportive of the minority of people coming out to the world and becoming a part of the LGBTQ+ community. The actions of the many who did not accept the idea of being gay, lesbian or transgender, would interfere with their confidence and freedom of being who they want to be. The idea of gay rights was not socially accepted since it had differed from the social norm of a male and female sexually attracted to one another. However, there would be a ‘safe haven’ in most cities for the LGBTQ+ community to thrive and reveal themselves towards the people that truly accepted them for who they are. Although there were very few ‘safe havens’ around, these places would be tormented by the police and many of the people in them would become oppressed since they wanted to be in a place of acceptance. From June 28, 1969 through July 1, 1969, the gay community faced massive oppression from police raids in Greenwich Village, NYC at Stonewall Inn, which caused them to start a riot which ignited a major conflict for the sake of their own safety and freedom. This riot allowed them to show their oppressors that they are human as well and are able to fight back for themselves and for the future generations ahead of them. Due to the lack of a formal compromise between the gay community and the police, many people questioned as well as oppressed them because of certain religious aspects and social norms, but the conflict resulted in the development of the Gay Liberation Front and allowing the LGBTQ+ community to freely express themselves.
When Aristotle discussed the material premises of enthymemes as being important in rhetoric, he was prescient of the kind of appeals that would be tendered by opponents in the discourse over gay rights issues long after his time. Smith and Windes express the nature of this conflict accurately when they write, “symbols expressing fundamental cultural values are invoked by all sides” (1997: 28). Similarly, Sarah S. Brown describes the participants in a “struggle to stake out symbolic positions of good and to frame their side in terms of morally powerful conceptions of right and wrong” (2000: 458). Fascinatingly, she suggests, “even people with deeply conflicting opinions appeal to the same moral
According to Eve Sedgwick, the definition of heterosexism is a series of assumptions that lead to the conclusion that all aspects of a person’s sexuality can be deduced by their biological sex alone. These assumptions relate to what sexualities are considered “normal”. In the text “Making Gay Meaning” Sedgwick lists several of these assumptions including that a person’s gender presentation and identities are “supposed” to match their biological sex, a person’s sexual partner’s perception as gay or straight is supposed to match their own, and that a person’s perception as gay or straight is supposed to correspond with the biological sex of that person and their sexual partner(s).
Homosexuality has always been a controversial topic in the United States, and the twenty-first century has brought about many new rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender group. The American Gay Rights Movement has a long history, but the LGBT community is now starting to have more rights and protection.

Have you ever wondered if people are born gay? Well, In this summary, it states that in some circumstances, the same animal have sexual relationships with the same sex. They have not found a way to be born gay. It is also a proven fact that being lesbian and gay happens to run in people family. It becomes a gene. Also, if you happen to be a twin, you have a higher risk to be gay because they share all their genes. There are some genes you got from your family and some you do not. Or perhaps, it might skip a generation. As I have stated plenty of facts, what is your opinion now on this topic?
“All men are created equal, No matter how hard you try, you can never erase those words,” Harvey Milk. A homosexual, as defined by the dictionary, is someone of, relating to, or characterized by a tendency to direct sexual desire toward another of the same sex. Homosexuality is ethical, and I will provide rational arguments for, and irrational arguments against the topic. A few objections are as follows: It is forbidden in the Bible and frowned upon by God; It is unnatural; Men and women are needed to reproduce; There are no known examples in nature; and the most common argument that concerns homosexuality is whether it is a choice or human biology.
