In March, during our last team meeting, the team teachers wanted to try something new. Sugarloaf has four core teaches, Mr. Magaw, Mr. Mercier, Mr. Dalton, and Mrs. Kendall. Every month they get to choose a student from their class that they believe is an honor student and should be recognized. The Sugarloaf team gathered in the east gym as they normally do for a team meeting; the leaders announced the prizes and the team leaders talked about rules and missing assignments. Then, as we were all getting ready to leave Mr. Dalton came to the front and told us all that we were trying something we’ve never done before. He had two of the team leaders, Dezirae Givens and Blake Proctor, hold a giant sling shot with a Hostess Cake in the middle.
Imagine standing on a softball field expected to perform at the age of 5. Even though the butterflies in my stomach were starting a war, nothing was going to stop me from stepping on that field to play my first tee ball game as a Little Tiger. Fans cheered, but what I noticed most was a little boy in the outfield picking his nose. Standing in the box, I was terrified; the field looked huge. I had never seen anything like this before, but I knew that the little boy was the person I needed to hit the ball to, so I hit the ball as hard as I could. The ball went soaring through the air like a bird on fire. Dropping from the air, it rolled to the fence. At that time, I knew I had fallen in love with the game of softball. I was smiling from ear to ear, I couldn’t believe I had hit the ball that far! Both sides screamed, yelled, and shouted with excitement. Was all this commotion for me? I rounded first, but I couldn’t go to second because my teammate, Kylie Leach, didn’t run. I didn’t know what she was doing. Sadly, the batter after me hit a ground ball to the pitcher, and the other team threw him out at first.
Wesley shook and smacked Kevin trying to wake him up thinking he was asleep. When he didn't wake up he called for help. The coach and bus driver ran to the back of the bus to see what was wrong. The team was in shock as they saw their star player being taken away in the black latex body bag of death. With tensions high and emotion everywhere, the team started thinking about what could have happened. One team mate thought about earlier in the day during school when Kevin and his “friend” got into a fight about a girl they both wanted to take to the Senior Prom. The fight was intense and both people said something that shouldn't have been said. They both jumped on one another out of rage and started swinging and shouting. A teacher came to break up the fight and when the dust settled both boys were bleeding and bruised. After the recollection a boy shouted “what if his “friend” poisoned his or caused trauma to his heart or brain?” Everyone started chatting amongst themselves, gossiping and planning to get the “friend”. After the chatting came to a minimum another player stated that he was with Kevin the entire day and he didn't eat or drink much after the fight and he didn't seem like himself after that. Everyone was shocked and looked frightened because Kevin was a diabetic and he need to maintain a steady blood sugar level. “If
Later the same day I noticed that there was still more chalk drawings appearing all over the front sidewalks of Loeb, the corridor, and within the bleachers. As I was looking for a “teammate” to speak with about where to locate the person in charge of the “teammates”, I spotted a little girl who was drawing with chalk. It
Clouds mugged the sun of light as the day progressed. Dusk filled the air on the baseball diamond where I would leave my legacy. Forth, was the championship game to be played, and the pressure of the starting pitcher, was not fazing me. In the zone, we said the Little League pledge. Jolts of excitement filled my muscles as I recited the piece that I know all too well. Warming up, I was controlled, and was ready to bring it. The game began with a bang. Strikeout after strikeout I fired, giving my all every single pitch. ‘BOOM’ went the glove after every pitch, whizzed right by the petrified batter. However, this was not much different for our team. Just two hits filled the board, I and my teammate Ian Keth. Scoring off of this was efficient,
Now all we had to do was wait for the coach to talk to us one by one letting us know if we made the team. All the sophomores went first, and when he got done talking to the sophomores it was time for the freshman to find out. Nobody knew who made it yet and who got cut because after he was done talking, you would go out through the locker room. So with all of us nervous we let Anthony go first because we thought if Anthony made it, we had some pretty high chances of making the team. After Anthony was done, he came up the stairs with a giant smile and a fist pump that got everyone excited. “Atta boy Berg,” we all shouted at once.
Isabelle was moved up to softball and Addison was still in lob ball. Addison started out amazingly and continued throughout the season to get progressively better. Isabelle started out great and slowly went downhill, even though the coach she had was far superior to Addison’s coach. The team Isabelle was on was filled with kids that were on traveling teams and had been playing for years; this was only her second year. All the kids on her team were outstanding and Isabelle couldn’t keep up.
Every month the Freshman Sugarloaf team holds a team meeting where everyone comes together to play team building games, win prizes, and be informed on things going on around the school and on the team. The sports get recognized and the birthdays for the month get little hats. At the beginning of the school year people on Sugarloaf got to run to be team leaders. After voting who we wanted to be the leaders four people, two girls and two guys, were chosen. Jeff Fosgate, Dez Givens, Blake Proctor, Haley Cusson are the elected Sugarloaf leaders. The leaders get to choose the prizes given out to students throughout the meeting.
It is July 12th, in California the Sacramento Leopard High School baseball team is warming up for the big game against the Sacramento Gorillas. They are big hometown rivals. The first time they played, Billy won the game with a walk off 3 run homerun. Only this game is the State Championship and who ever wins this goes to Nationals. The only problem is the temperature is 112 degrees Fahrenheit, but the game must be played. Ricky the star player for the Gorillas is going to be on the mound today. He usually throws a 93 mile per hour fastball,lt is the best in the state of California. Billy will be on the mound for the Leopards he throws a 89 mile per hour fastball.
Few minutes later, one teacher started to faint and fell in the middle of audience. The game stopped and nurse came into the gym. He wasn't breathing at all, so he was sent to a hospital. The game kept going with my teammate and remaining teachers.”
On October 9 the Lady Bulldog's softball team played against the Lady Bearcats from Cairo. Although they fell short with the close score of 3-2, their classmates cheered them on from the bleachers. Along with many of the student body, Abigail Parton, 12, participates in the chants that filled the night sky. Parton states that her favorite part about pep squad is,"getting dressed up , but also supporting and encouraging the
The Claflin University men’s basketball team will be in search of a sixth straight win Monday against LeMoyne-Owen at the Tullis Arena.
To our surprise, the principal came out to the stadium, accompanied by about 25 members of their school’s Project Unify Club (a club that promotes cooperation between special needs students and ‘normal’ students), bearing signs and smiling faces. They all came to the field to cheer him on as he ran the bases one last time. Everyone in the stadium stood and cheered as he charged toward home. It was easily my most gratifying accomplishment, seeing Bailey’s face on that final stretch, and knowing that I had helped him get there by challenging the absurd idea that he meant any less because of his
Telly, player of lacrosse and educator of freshmen, was leaving from his fourth block class, science, now on the way to lacrosse practice, his position is attacker. Telly’s teacher, Dr. Howard, was pretty rude and disrespectful to Telly Machus. She always made him do work that nobody else in the class had to do. Dr. Howard was disrespectful to majority of students but made sure she was disrespectful to Telly. “Do this extra work or face the extreme punishments!” Dr. Howard would exclaim at Telly.
We had traveled in the minivan for 5 hours, for a group of 13 year old boys this trip felt like eternity. However, our excitement kept us all jaunting to each other about silly middle school shenanigans, who can dougie better, and how we were all going to “murk” this tryout. Johnny Evans, Malik Chatman, Gavin Rose, Ronnie Fountain, and I were all selected to try-out for the 14u Team South football team. This team would represent all the best players in the southeast and clash them against other regions best athletes. This would be a 3 day try-out. After leaving Orlando, the van had finally reached its destination. Coach Rose jingled to the car “Atlanta is the place to be, with orange peaches and southern tea,” we all stared at Gavin as his face turned as red as a Crayola. We pulled into the lot of the hotel all participating athletes had been assigned right off of I-75. We all unloaded the van of our luggage proceeded to the check in, Coach got the keys for room 325 and 326. I was so tired of riding in back of the van that I did not really care how the room would look as long as I could put my bags down and fall right into the bed. Malik, Johnny and I entered our room 326 to the right was with a bathroom sink, a mirror, and shower. On the left, a mini kitchen with a stove, island table, and refrigerator. In front of us, there were two wooden dressers pinned together with a television on top. Near the window, there was a small table with a lamp as well as chair in the corner.
We passed all the security guards who all wished us good luck in our game. We finally arrived to our locker room where we all picked out a spot according to our position that we played. Our coach told us that all the defense and goalies should sit together and all the forwards should sit close. The second the team opened up their bags the raunchy stench of body odor filled the room. I set the stereo up and started playing the Rocky song that we would always listen to before every big game. The players were all dressed in our uniforms when the coach told us that he had a surprise for us. He yanked a box form the hallway and pulled out our new jerseys that he ordered for the great accomplishment. This reward reminded everyone of our unbelievable journey to the state game. Coach handed the jerseys out telling us the pride we should feel as we slip the sweater on. We had twenty minutes until the challenge when our coach ordered everyone to be quiet for his pre-game speech. He started out telling us how proud he was to be our coach and whatever happens in the next two hours he commends us. The rest of the speech was the strategy he wanted to use if we encounter any problems. In his final words the horn rang telling both the teams that it was time to take the ice.
