“Even though her mother had no sense that Riley was having problems, she knew it was important to talk to her daughter about suicide, and so she did. Yes, if they are broadcast the general public could be more informed. At the same time, there are already many foundations and schools that show the effects of suicide. When suicides are broadcast over the media they can romanticize death, make death seem like the most logical solution. “Dr. Christine Moutier, chief medical officer at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention,” says, when people make social media accounts to remember the deceased they are always praised in the comments. This is showing people that when someone dies they are loved and wanted (Kutner). Attempting suicide is an epidemic in the United States; especially when 41% of transgender individuals have attempted suicide compared 1.6% of the general population (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation). Due to this, the question of whether or not transgender youth have a harder, more straining adolescence than their cisgender counterparts rises. Although adolescence can be hard on everyone, experiences such as a school environment, puberty, laws that guarantee protection, family and social acceptance of transgender youth are harder than those of their cisgender counterparts (harder does not necessarily mean correlate with strenuous, the use of harder is aiming more towards different, costly, and possibly more confusing). The revolution for transgender lives is just beginning, change is happening. But in order for change to occur, adequate information on the material needs to be discussed and terminology must be defined and questions must be answered. Questions such as: what do the terms transgender and cisgender actually mean? Why is it important to know the difference between the two terms? What is the difference between transsexual and transgender?
On October 5, 2016, Fowlerville High School freshman, Brendan Kangas, committed suicide. His whole school and community was struck with grief, previously unaware of Brendan’s battle with depression. The next day school was held on schedule, and it was a very unproductive day. According to the faculty, kids were crying in classrooms, and uninstructed teachers did not know how to handle the situation (Brent). Many Fowlerville students have struggled academically, unable to cope with the news of Brendan’s death. Fowlerville was not prepared to handle such a crisis and administrators were unaware of the effect Brendan’s suicide would have on the school. While on patrol, i made contact with a bronze colored passenger car on George Wallace Dr, with no headlights on. I initiated a traffic stop. the vehicle pulled onto Sussex Ave. As I approached the vehicle, all the windows were rolled down and there was an overwhelming smell of green marijuana coming from the interior of the vehicle. After getting the driver information, I had the driver and the occupants step from the vehicle. All subjects were detained so I could search the vehicle. In the back seat, the was marijuana shake on the seat pad. there was no other marijuana found in the vehicle. the subjects were released and the driver was issued a warning for improper lights.

All of these statistics show how prominent suicide is in today’s society. To continue, a suicide note from a fourteen year old girl reads, “At least if I die they’ll put a plaque up in the school hall with my name on it” (“Teen Suicide: Prevention is Contagious, Too”). Many view America as the best country in the world. There are so many different perspectives of life in America. This country is developed from the roots of many different cultures. This country is a place of freedom, opportunity, and hope. America is a place where everyone from different backgrounds unite as one, and help this land of freedom thrive. We are not White, Mexican, Native American, Asian, Black or whatever other race; we are Americans. Sadly, many Americans do not appreciate this country as much as they should. The suicide rate has been rising. In the article " Youth suicide rates are rising. School and the internet might be to blame.", written by Lara Korte. It states in the article "In 2014, the county saw four suicides of people under 18 and under. In 2015, there were five. In 2016, there were 13 suicides. So far this year, seven." This rate went to four to five to a huge jump to 13 than January to May there seven and that just in 5 months. Just in the past three years, there was 22 suicide that just in three years. This rate is starting to get too high and why so people can tease each other and make fun of them for the fun of it. An issue in mental health counseling that affects the young and old, civilians and criminals alike is suicide. Suicidality can be considered both a legal and ethical issue in counseling depending on how the counselor handles the situations presented to him or her. The news articles I found each discuss different topics relating to suicide, but all have similar messages: not enough is being done through advocacy, education, and awareness. Legally and ethically, when one of these facets are not upheld problems can arise.
