Summary: The Outsiders

The Outsiders movie which was released on March 25, 1983, is a American drama film directed by Francis Ford Coppola .It is a crime thriller and is adapted from a novel of the same name by S.E. Hinton .The Film was shot on location in Tulsa, Oklahoma and set in 1965 .The story of this movie revolves around the conflict between the two different social groups ,which is the rich and the poor. It is a class versus class conflict which gives rise to a physical conflict between the Greasers and the Socs .I feel there are physical fights throughout the story between the two groups due to enculturation. The native culture that is transmitted from one generation to another among the Greasers is the reason for their limitations.

To explain, the greasers were defined as Outsiders because they were poor and treated like outcasts.

The Greasers feel like they are the outsiders. “that kid, Pip, he reminded me of us-how he felt marked lousy because he wasn’t a gentlemen or anything,” (Doc B). Here, Ponyboy feels as though the Greasers are stereotyped to be lousy and stupid by everyone else, leading them feeling like outsiders.

The Outsiders, made in 1983, is based on the original book made in 1967, The Outsiders. The movie copied the same plot of the book heavily, as it still portrays the same main character, Ponyboy Curtis (played by Thomas C. Howell), a fourteen year old boy living with his two brothers. This one and a half hour film shows Ponyboy’s life as a greaser, as he experiences the positive and negative sides of his family life style, and questions the benefits of the greaser’s biggest enemy; the Socials.

The story The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton, was a popular novel because of how realistic it was. The novel was successful because it included famous people and items from the 1960s. These items allowed for people to read the story and make connections. One of the topics that was referenced in the book was Perry Mason. Perry Mason was a popular television series that made readers understand how Ponyboy viewed the courtroom.

In this novel, the Greasers feel like the true outsiders. When Ponyboy is in biology class, he takes out a switchblade and a soc girl says, “They’re right. You are a hood.” (Doc B). The Soc girl called him a hood because she has heard stuff about him from other people. So he is known to be a hood, which doesn’t make him part of society.

Although, the greasers and the socs feel like outsiders at times. The real outsiders are those who can get pass the greasers and socs. The greasers felt like outsiders. While Ponyboy was dissecting a worm in biology he pulled out a switchblade. A girl in his class said, “they are right.

An ‘outsider’ relates to a person who is ostracised, does not belong to a particular group and is unaccepted. Director-writer Amy Heckerling portrayed characters such as Tai/Cher as the ‘outsider’ of her film ‘Clueless’ in the same way, S.E Hinton manifest Ponyboy Curtis and the gang, Greasers as the outcast of her novel ‘The Outsiders’. Of course, nobody had expected to read about social injustices and the struggles of everyday teenagers in such a book, which is one of the special reasons as to why it was written. Who would have anticipated finding massive predicaments in a novel they thought to include petty sub-plots? Surely this book taught many lessons and shared messages to those willing enough to comprehend. S.E. Hinton was successfully able to embed many messages into this book, one of them being the similarities many people can have despite how large the gaps between them may seem.

This quote relates to the novel The Outsiders by informing people that tough moments in life are hard to overcome. Just like Ponyboy has to learn to overcome the death of his best friend, Johnny. The main theme that S.E. Hinton tries to convey through the novel is: hardships lurk wherever you let them. She implies that you should stay strong and courageous through tough times.

The novel The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton, is as realistic as life could be. It could be considered one of the first and best genuine stories ever wrote. Generally touching the concept of how a teenager’s life is or was in the mid-60s. This story focuses majorly on a life of a teen forming part of what is so called a gang. Leaving the adults behind (out of the story) as they will be merely mentioned because as a teenager adults aren’t somebody one is really fond of as it used to be when kids.
