Zora Neale Hurston is an African American female, who was born on January 7, 1891. She was born into a family of sharecroppers in Nostagula, Alabama, but she was raised in Eatonville, Florida. Eatonville was the first black incorporated community in the United States. Hurston never finished grade school, but she attended two colleges, Howard University and Barnard College. She is best known as an American novelist, short story writer, folklorist, and anthropologist. “Spunk” is one of her most famous short stories, as well as “Sweat”. She won second place for her short story “Spunk” which boosted her successful career. They both emphasized modern day back in the 1930s. After analyzing and examining the short story “Sweat”, I noticed that she uses her diction, theme, and the protagonist in the story to emphasize her thoughts and her message.
Firstly, Diction is the choice of words and or phrases that are used in speeches and writing. In this short story, diction plays a very important role in the pronunciation and enunciation of the type of dialect she uses. Writing in African American dialect makes the story more …show more content…

Delia is being victimized the whole entire story, but she then finds the courage to stand up for herself. Sykes is being very abusive towards her in many ways. For example, he buys a snake to frighten her or maybe even kill her, but it ends up backfiring on him causing his death. The relationship towards them reminds me of a slave and his or her master. “I didn't know I was a slave until I found out I couldn't do the things I wanted(Douglas).” This quote is essentially saying that Douglas felt as if he was being degraded and controlled. Sykes treats Delia as a prisoner in her own house, making it hard for her to live comfortably in her own house which she pays all the bills for.
