Symbolism In The Birthmark

In the short story “The Birthmark” the author, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses different patterns of imagery of different settings to contribute to both the symbolism and an allegorical reading of the story. The boudoir was described as a scene like enchantment, the apartment had gorgeous curtains, perfumed- lamps that resulted in a “soft, impurpled radiance” (Hawthorne 225). The description of the boudoir symbolizes Aylmer’s ideal, perfect reality which is free from mortal imperfections. Hawthorne uses similar imagery to characterize the laboratory. The lab, however is naked with brick walls described as “…oppressively close, and was tainted with gaseous odors which had been tormented forth by the processes of science” (Hawthorne 229). The
