With eyes screwed shut, she intakes a deep breath of what is supposed to be fresh air. Instead, she is met with smoke so thick it instinctively makes her break out into coughs. Her ears listen for the sound of birds or music; instead, she is met with the relatively unpleasant sound of car horns and coughing. On a day meant for sweaters and warm beverages, she finds her body heating with even the lightest of clothes and craving a cool glass of water. Many people in today's society have adopted the idea that car usage is essential to one's daily life; the idea that comfort via easy transport is worth any cost to the environment. The previous description, most likely assumed to be fictional dystopia of sorts, may not necessarily be fiction at all; it may very likely be the result of strain on the environment due to car …show more content…
For example, in select cities in Germany, "Street parking, driveways and home garages are generally forbidden in this experimental new district on the outskirts of Freiburg, near the French and Swiss borders," (source one; p. 2). As a result of such a drastic effort, residents have reported an overall improvement in their quality of life. One media trainer and mother of two children, H. Walter, even stated, “When I had a car I was always tense. I'm much happier this way." Yet another example includes the three cities of Columbia: Bogota, Cali, and Valledupar; these cities have also restricted the use of cars. Similarly, residents have reported feelings of well-being, as well as cultural improvements. "It's a good opportunity to take away stress and lower air pollution," said Carlos Arturo Plaza, (source three; p.5). Culturally, the reduction of car usage has grown in popularity and appreciation. Such appreciation and cultural shifts have been displayed in the many parks, sports centers, sidewalks, and shopping districts, that have been developed as a
Throughout today’s society, media contributes to almost everyone’s daily life. From informative news channels to comical television shows, media proves to be effective in advertisement, releasing messages and informing the audience. Although media proves to be wildly effective in advertising, releasing messages and informing the audience, periodically destructive and misleading messages are provided to the audience and directly influencing women. Cultural critics widely agree that media tends to negatively influence women and all the critics point to research which supports the belief that women are portrayed as subordinate to men, having no
Pertaining to the “day without cars” tradition the city of Bogota, Columbia : “It has seen the construction of 118 bicycle paths, the most of any Latin American city…” (Belsky, 3) A single day without cars has encouraged not only, new businesses to spring up and infrastructure to be improved but also physical activity to become more common in countries that implement such a tradition. In my own experience, a less sedentary lifestyle means lower risk of heart disease, obesity, and other weight and activity related ailments. In addition car usage reduction seems to lessen stress, a claim that mother of two, Heidrun Walter testifies to. “ ‘When I had a car I was always tense. I’m much happier this way.’...” (Rosenthal 1). This is a benefit that cannot be ignored as higher stress levels can take a toll on your mental health. Last but certainly not least, is the fact that less smog will discourage the pollution-induced respiratory illnesses permeating the developed world. Polluted air is not meant to be breathed and less of it is better for the whole of the
Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer that tells the story of a young man who's been in his 20s, went into Alaska alone and died, however their are more about him that we did not think about. That he makes us understand the real Chris McCandless, from a bibliographic point a view. The people he met, his actions, and Chris own ideas to have one reason to go to Alaska. Chris McCandless is a humble person, he went into the wilderness to test himself the feeling of his own belief about taking a break from socially, to journey without the help of friends that to offer him help to make his journey easier. Furthermore he, does not want them and his family to be part of his odyssey journey for the sake of a test for him to survive alone without having
It has recently been brought to my attention that our school is looking to adopt a sustainable menu into our meal program and I would like to give my viewpoint on the matter. As one many students here at Oxford Academy this change will affect me directly. Although people may at first oppose this conversion I think if we are able to overcome the first obstacles, this change would bring a great positive impact to the environment and the health of our students.
he short anecdote above accurately represents the situation of many students across the globe. Throughout the last decade, technology had exploded in a way so immensely that nothing and nobody can stop it. Not even educators. This is why taking the easy way out of assignments has become such a frequently used method by students everywhere. It is evident that students of this generation have become complacent in a “short-cut” society.
At the beginning of the 20th century, American Progressive methods began changing to fit a new era of economic and social policy. The early 1900s were a time of increasing social awareness and focus on responsible legislation. Some of the economic changes that caused this new Progressive awareness and focus were desire for growth, new moral ideologies, and an orientation around workers' rights.
In Amy Chua’s essay, “The Right Road to America” she argues the point that immigration is a great value of this country and that America was built from immigrants. One thing differs from Chua’s essay than from others because she not only gives highly credible facts on how immigrants have helped our country, but she also provides ways to improve the issues of immigration into America. Amy Chua is a highly credible professor at Yale and states throughout her essay that immigrants who possess American values deserve to be here in America and those who don’t should leave. America had always been a country that accepted immigration and allowed all
This argumentative synthesis consists of four different articles that are all based on social class and inequality. The first article is “Born Poor and Smart” by Angela Locke. The second articles I will be using is “ Culture of Success” by Brink Lindsey. The third article I will be using is “The War Against the Poor Instead of Programs to End Poverty” by Herbert J. Gans. The final article that I will be using is “ A Great Time to Be Alive?” by Matt Yglesias.
Progressivism expanded across American cities and provided a variety of responses to issues of Americans after the introduction and rapid growth of the urban industrial order. Initially the progressive began as a social movement and grew into a political one. The goals of the movement varied addressing issues such as increasing democracy in the government, the improvement of working and social conditions and identifying and correcting issues of corrupted power.
Source A supports the claim and is reliable. Source A is intended to convey a balanced perspective on China’s healthcare system in the early 1950s. From Source A, we can infer that healthcare reforms were wide in scope and extent, targeting prostitution, opium use, diseases spread by vermin, and provided “basic healthcare and preventive services” to all, but yielded unintentional drawbacks in killing sparrows. This is reliable since it corroborates with my contextual knowledge that Mao’s healthcare reforms were indeed numerous and wide-ranging in the 1950s. It did close brothels, opium dens, and launch health campaigns to eliminate diseases.
The Ohio State University is home to one of the best college football teams in America. The university has a rich history where several famous players and coaches have emerged. One famous coach in particular is Jim Tressel, who coached at Ohio State from 2001 until 2011. During his tenure, he had a winning record that came to an abrupt end as a result of multiple ethics violations. Tressel’s full range leadership, critical thinking, team dynamics and ethical behaviors will be examined in this thesis. Based on the information found in the study guides, Tressel is a visionary leader who was not ethical. Despite a lapse in ethics, he led the Buckeyes for nearly a decade with a vision to win, and he did just that.
Space travel, the thing of the past or a thing of the future? Space exploration is something of both. Space exploration is a waste of money and an endangerment to people. The money used for space exploration is a waste of money and should be used for something more helpful than exploring the space.
In order for alien eyes to see what humans can’t see the structure and the amount of their photoreceptor cells, have to differ.
Usually the linear energy transfer (LET) is expressed in units of KeVµm-1 in water. The conversion of units between KeVµm-1 and MeVcm-1 is 1 KeVµm-1 = 10MeV cm-1.1
Infectious diseases are quickly becoming one of the leading causes of death in the United States and the world (Morens, 2013). They threaten immunocompromised individuals and are able to cause severe illness in otherwise healthy people. Hospitals and communities have developed protocols in an attempt to prevent further pathogen transmission. One infectious agent that has been at the apex of medical research is Staphylococcus aureus, which is a Gram-positive coccus. This microorganism colonizes the skin, respiratory tract, and nasal passage in about
