One day during my biology class while I was dissecting my frog, the lights abruptly went out. After a few minutes of girls screaming, the teachers decided to find the source of the darkness and how long the lights would be out. After the teachers left, students began roaming the halls. Stories started to fly; most weren’t concerned of why it happened, just about how long it would be. 55 students said that the lights would be out for 72 hours; 34 said it would be 4 hours. 39 of the students believed it would be 7 hours before the lights came back; 22 said it would be 24 hours. Outside, the teachers broke us into groups to investigate, reminding us that with the lights out there is a “potential hazard of downed electrical power lines.” Should
Throughout today’s society, media contributes to almost everyone’s daily life. From informative news channels to comical television shows, media proves to be effective in advertisement, releasing messages and informing the audience. Although media proves to be wildly effective in advertising, releasing messages and informing the audience, periodically destructive and misleading messages are provided to the audience and directly influencing women. Cultural critics widely agree that media tends to negatively influence women and all the critics point to research which supports the belief that women are portrayed as subordinate to men, having no
Planet Earth is painted with so many different colors, naturally or human-made. It is not a question that color is a big part of society. Everything in this world from fashion to architecture is undeniably associated with color. Color is assume to have association with feeling. People have their own favorite color, and least favorite color. Does color affect how human feel? Does these color spark up some chemical when the eyes land on it? Certain environment have color that they are suppose to be wearing. What should be the color that an educational environment should have? CIA First International School is an educational campus that the design adapted the modern chic look, consisting of lots of gray and white wall. Is this color suitable for
After the completion of the series of labs we were tasked with, we have discovered numerous things about what substance would be the best biofuels and biofuel alternatives. In lab 1, we germinated 150 radish seeds on filter paper within different Petri dishes. For my group, we were asked to use the substance of Ethanol in concentrations, 10%, 5%, 2.5%, 1.25%, 625% and the last dish being filled with deionized water. Out of these concentrations, we can tell that ethanol doesn’t cause much germination and doesn’t greatly affect the environment. However, when compared to the N- Butanol Ethanol isn’t the healthiest alternative out of the three we tested for these labs, it was a close measurement but the N-Butanol is a healthier alternative for
Born and raised in a predominantly African American neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago, I found myself at 10 years old tutoring a 16 year old male in my 6th grade class. In spite of countless initiatives to increase literacy scores, it became undeniably apparent that the public school system had failed to help my peers learn the basic phonetic components necessary for the 6th grade. This experience encouraged me to begin studying the multi-faceted profession of speech-language pathology at the University of Missouri. After being accepted into the program as one of two African American students, I was exposed to the numerous opportunities Speech-Language Pathologists have to practice their work and the different settings in which they
It’s a chilly Monday morning for the students of Colby High School, all the students come in exhausted from their 3-day weekend because of all the late nights they had either binge watching their favorite shows or even just talking all night to their friends. This all happened because the students knew that they get an extra day to sleep in, but there are other students who studied for a test he or she may have in a class. They could have also done homework all weekend because of the extra day off school. This happens during a four day week with Friday off for a Teacher Development Day for the students of Colby High. Imagine this is the case every week for a school year. Schools are transferring from a five-day school week to a four-day school
Sirens were blaring throughout the city. A fall of darkness seemed to cover what was a beautiful, warm, August day. Residents began to panic and scrambled to the nearest television to discover what was going on. “Breaking news. Streets without power. Millions without lights. A sudden and devastating blackout left many of our neighboring counties, cities, and towns in the dark”, the anchorman announced on the television. The local city had not been affected by whatever mystery disaster had taken place, but many began to fear that this town was next. Loved ones began calling each other urging them to get home due to the emergency situation. Many worried that going home for the day would not be possible due to the subway system and other public transportation sources being inoperable. While on the phone, many phone calls were ended quickly due to a power source fail. Those that still had power checked all outlets of social media to try to find some more information on the situation.
That was the bell for 8th hour. Everyone starts to run around like chickens with their heads cut off trying to get to class before the tardy bell. Then there’s us, in our little pack. Anastasiya and James head off to the band room while Mia, Kyle, Aaron and I head towards Mr. Quinn’s classroom. Mr. Quinn isn’t the greatest teach nor is he the worst. Everyone claims that Mr. Miles, the history teacher, is the teacher you want.
Shawna gathered her papers and caught up with Amber, Sonny, and Ruby, who were waiting outside the classroom.
The U.S electric- power system provides power to over 300 million individuals and is comprised of more than 200,000 miles lines of transmission, its generating capacity is over one million megawatts and it is worth above $1 trillion (Markey & Waxman, 2013). The elements of the network are greatly interdependent and, as demonstrated by history, a system failure of a line of outage can result in fall in other areas. Markey & Waxman (2013) provides an example of a power failure that occurred on August 14, 2003 when four hanging high- altitude lines of power in northern Ohio clashed into trees and shut off. Together with an error in a computer system, the shut down lead to a flow of failures that finally left over 50 million people in Canada and
I have been a part of many professional developments, some of which have provided a plethora of valuable information that I refer back to on a weekly basis, and other professional developments that have seemingly been provided for reasons that I do not understand. Most, I will admit, have been very useful. One of the most beneficial professional developments I had attended was one at the beginning of the school year, in which teachers congregated at the high school, simply because it was the largest of buildings in its district and could appropriately house all teachers, administrators, and other staff members. During this professional development, we unexpectedly participated in a mock lockdown; however, this simulation and drill appeared to be so real it was actually somewhat nerve-wracking at times. I have never been so involved and active in a professional development before, and this one, which was so unique, allowed me to acquire the skills, knowledge, and awareness of what actually could happen during a lockdown. As I had recently graduated, this was one of the first professional developments I had attended prior to stepping foot into my first very own classroom. The way all teachers interacted and played a valuable role in this replication allowed me to walk away knowing I had learned much from this session.
Infectious diseases are quickly becoming one of the leading causes of death in the United States and the world (Morens, 2013). They threaten immunocompromised individuals and are able to cause severe illness in otherwise healthy people. Hospitals and communities have developed protocols in an attempt to prevent further pathogen transmission. One infectious agent that has been at the apex of medical research is Staphylococcus aureus, which is a Gram-positive coccus. This microorganism colonizes the skin, respiratory tract, and nasal passage in about
A Mixture of Blue and Green: Turquoise Turquoise: a simple adjective describing something of a greenish-blue pigment. The absolutely normal color has much more meaning behind itself than what meets the eye. The hybrid color of blue and green serves as a representation of myself.
Humans are like ships we need a lighthouse to light us through the dark night, navigating through the rocky shallow waters. However, we never see the rocky water that is being shaken beneath the ship until they just sink. According to the National drug survey, more than 22 million Americans at the age of 12 and older (9 percent of the U.S population) use illegal drugs. As people, we tend to hide away from the evil that prevails us (i.g.e school, work, or problems, etc). If we choose to, we can live in a world of comforting illusion. We can allow ourselves to be deceived by false realities. Drugs are a problem that we cannot just be blinded by, they mirror false realities as a means to escape into a different vacuum of perception. First, we
The students all being nine years old, and the sun coming out every seven years tells me that these students were all two years old when the sun first came out for the students. This shows that the kids are eager to see the sun because they most likely don’t remember seeing the sun the first time it came out. The students waiting outside
Avoid downed power lines as well as other hazards created by the storm. Never touch anything in contact with power lines. Notes for House Boards of housed chapters: •
