The old man with the peculiar eye and the handsome young boy, both two victims from two blood pressure rising tales. These short stories are “The Tell Tale Heart” and “The Landlady.” One will see that there are both similarities and differences in how the stories were written. The two are cliff hanging, but the author allows imaginations to illustrate the next blood-curdling scene. Based on the facts given regarding each story, you’ll be able to make predictions off of your opinions. Throughout this essay, information will be clarified about “The Tell Tale Heart,” in addition to “The Landlady,” and how they contrast. As mentioned, “The Tell Tale Heart” is one of the two stories. For instance, pg. 175 states, “As a matter of fact, now he came to think of it, he wasn’t at all sure that the second name didn’t have almost as much of a familiar ring about it as the first.” Then, foreshadowing is also found on this occasion, “But the air was deadly cold and the wind was like a flat blade of ice on his cheeks.” This sneakily indicated a death at the end of the story. Another method Dahl used, like Poe, was suspense. Such an example lies on pg. 173, “The compulsion or, more accurately, the desire to follow after her into that house was extraordinarily strong.” This lady leading the boy, Billy, into that house was a tad uptight and anxious. “I stuff all my little pets myself when they pass away. Will you have another cup of tea?” (pg. 179.) Finally, the murder evidence is found within pg. 177. The vicious lady softly mentioned, “That’s good. Because later on, if I happen to forget what you were called, then I could always look it up. I still do that almost every day with Mr. Mulholland and Mr. . . .Mr. . . .” All of these details, plus others, make up this an unsettling
