Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
My Own Values: I believe that people who are in need should get the proper assistance they deserve. In high school, I volunteered at a soup kitchen and saw how children struggled to obtain their basic needs and in some essence, loss a piece of their childhood. I support TANF especially since it helps families, which includes aiding children who do not have the ability to support themselves. It is hard for me to see the children suffer especially since it is no fault of their own.
Professional Social Work Values: Social workers are heavily involved in welfare reform, which is seen behind Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (Woodside, 2001). TANF provides certain families such as those

TANF also addresses the issues of poverty and help stabilizes life at home (Woodside, 2001). In addition, TANF is time limited which allows social workers to help clients gain empowerment and sustain their autonomy.
Comparison between My Values and the Profession’s Values, including the implications: For the most part, my values are compatible with the policy behind TANF. Through TANF, families are able to receive the aid they need. However, I find myself conflicted about the time piece. I am aware that people should not use TANF or any other social service on a long term basis but at the same time, all situations are different. It might not be fair to the individuals who need more assistance because their circumstances are just that more challenging. Despite these feelings, I know as a social worker I have to follow the government’s policies and take advantage of the time granted to provide a maximal level of service.
Affordable Care Act (ACA)
My Own Values: I believe that everyone has the right to health care, especially if health conditions calls for it. I do not think income level or the type of insurance should dictate the eligibility or quality of care. By using that criteria, we are implying that certain groups of people deserves to be taken care of and have good health while others do not deserve it. I believe healthcare should be accessible to all as a basic human right.

In 1996, former President Bill Clinton signed the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act (PWORA), which brought reform to the welfare system. Under this act, Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) was replaced with Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). The enactment of this new program brought about several changes, including transferring the responsibility of welfare from the federal level to the state level, disentitlement to public assistance, and the implementation of work requirements to receive aid (Karger and Stoesz, 2014, p. 228). As social workers, it is important to understand this act and how it fits into our professional goals. While TANF does reflect many of the standards put in place by the National
Whose interests are best served by the current welfare requirements? TANF encourages states to provide assistance to those welfare recipients who are most likely to succeed at employment, ignoring individuals who are harder to place. In order to show increases in employment and wage rates, the most attention is
They hope that the recipients will work towards someday leaving the program. While this is the goal, many recipients will not attempt to find work or the job is consider too low paying for them. Therefore, they continue to be a welfare recipient or are forced out of the program. There have been many changes in the welfare system and how to deal with the poor and less fortune. If you are having a difficult time paying your medical bills, housing and most important food for yourself and your family, you are definitely not alone even in 2014. Temporary assistance for needy families TANF replaced the traditional welfare programs known as Aid to Families with Dependent Children ( AFDC) . The welfare system would be an unlikely model for anyone designing a welfare system 1996. The type and amount of aid available to individuals and dependent children varies from state to state. Failure to comply with work requirements could result in loss of benefits . Current
The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) is a federally funded program that was created to assist needy families in becoming self-sufficient. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, TANF has four major purposes. (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2015) The first is to “provide assistance to needy families so that children can be cared for in their own homes”. The second is to “reduce the dependency of needy parents by promoting job preparation, work and marriage”. The third is to “prevent and reduce the incidence of out-of-wedlock pregnancies”. The final purpose is to “encourage the formation and maintenance of two-parent families”. The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program allows the States flexibility in identifying criteria for the populations served. However, there are a few general and federally imposed restrictions that are as follows. States must
Social work is a service that provides 'universalist services outside the market on the principle of need' (Titmuss, 1974, p.146). It maintains welfare of the public, and its basic role in adult social care is to focus on individuals, families and communities, and to ensure their well-being. By doing so, social workers improve quality of life, and serve for betterment of the whole community, thus enabling a social change. Today, much of these social work services is guaranteed by social policies and laws, which ensure delivery of social care to different individuals. However, there are significant drawbacks in social work practice, and issues that need to be addressed by the public and by social workers themselves. This essay
Social work tries to influence the overall quality of life to improve it as well as addressing inequalities and aiding those in need. Similarly, a social policy does the same in providing principles and course of actions to help social workers achieve in improving their clients’ lives. Social workers can provide evidence supporting inequality issues and the impact they have on the public. They also test out the social policies in practice to prove whether they are efficient and generate new provisions within policies to make it better effective in aiding clients. In the same matter, social policies enable social workers to incorporate its principles into practice to support clients during their dilemmas. Social policies direct the formulation
The practice of social work requires knowledge of human development and behavior, of social, economic and cultural institutions, and of the interaction of all these factors. Social workers help people of all backgrounds address their own needs through psychosocial services and advocacy. Social workers help people overcome some of life’s most difficult challenges: poverty, discrimination, abuse, addiction, physical illness, divorce, loss, unemployment, educational problems, disability, and mental illness. They help prevent crises and counsel individuals, families, and communities to cope more effectively with the stresses of everyday
Nutritional assistance programs are being over-utilized in my area. I believe they are not been fairly distributed. I feel that there are so many people out there that are getting assistance because they know what they have to say to get it and not because they really needed. In the other hand, I particularly, known cases that really need the assistance and they has been denied. Like a single mom of a 3 year old child who is not eligible to get assistance because according to them, she doesn’t needed since she has a job, even though she only make $8/hr and most of the time she doesn’t get her 40 hours in the week. Sad cases that for being honest are not receiving what they need. There are many people that certainly know how to play and cheat
Social workers play an important role for overall well-being of society. Their job is the provide support for people who are in need of support. People who may seek the help of social services include unemployed people, the elderly, the sick, and kids whose welfare may be threatened ("Social Work: The Personal Social Services."). They help identify the goals their clients are looking to achieve and help them find ways to accomplish them. Social workers with a primary focus childcare, are there in order to ensure that the children in society are protected and are in safe homes. They respond to emergency situations that can include, but are not limited to when children are abused and when someone’s mental wellbeing is at risk. Social workers
Government programs help families who are unable to help themselves because of limited ability or income. These families need assistance to continue their daily lives and contribute to our society. This assistance includes food stamps, reduced and free school lunches, housing assistance, unemployment insurance, and Head Start. By helping needy individuals, they are making an investment in a brighter future.
Do you believe you believe healthcare should be for everyone? Well I do, I believe everyone is entitled to the right to have healthcare because the decoration of independence states that all men are equal and should have equal rights. Giving the right to the people to have health care no matter their circumstances we would be able to lower the cost of healthcare in the United States overall. But do not get me wrong my overall goal to discuss is not just about the cost of healthcare it’s about how it can help people‘s lives and keep America healthy. The right to healthcare is a national right that it officially recognized by the United States.
Social workers want to make a difference in people’s lives. They care about others and want to improve them. They want to help people overcome everyday life struggles. As well as face many of today’s world challenges. The challenges today are “poverty, discrimination, abuse, addiction, physical illness, divorce, loss, unemployment, educational problems, disabilities, and mental illnesses” (Social Work Profession, 1).
On a broader scale, the system of social work has a target area of individuals who are more susceptible to poverty. With the knowledge social workers can advocate for change/ advancements in programs to assist and better the quality of life for women and children; assisting those already in poverty and possibly preventing others from falling into poverty.
I agree with you that health care should be available for anyone who needs it. Everyone is created equal and this is why I believe everyone should have an equal opportunity for receiving health care. I like that you pointed out how much money hospitals make and how expensive medical bills are. It’s a good idea that people who cannot afford health care should be covered by hospitals, since they make so much money. I also like that you pointed out that payment plans could be discussed for those who are poor. However, if it is absolutely impossible for someone to pay for health care, then they should be covered. I believe that someone who cannot pay for health care should not be turned away because it seems morally wrong to let someone suffer.
In life things do not always go as planned, we run into some rough patches. For example, one can suddenly get fired from their job but that does not stop the bills from rolling in especially when there is a family to take care of, in situations like this financial help can really be useful. Welfare programs like the “ temporary assistance for needy families” purpose is give money to a group of parents and dependent children living together in a household. Another way that the government has been helping is by offering food stamps, food stamps provide a monthly wage to help keep the family in need feed. Unfortunately many will be cut off from food stamp in 2016 because the waivers have expired, as many as a million people will no longer receive it. There are those that believe government assistance is making a mistake with these welfare programs. After doing some research, their reason for feeling this way is because they think that it is making people in these programs more dependent saying “they will no longer wish to work because they won 't receive the profits gained from the governments help anymore.” Even though there are some that take advantage of the help they receive, helping the less fortunate is priority number one. Most forms of government welfare should not be abolished because it offers assistance for those in need.
