Tension Between Dreams And Realities In The Great Gatsby

While reading The Great Gatsby, I have noticed a constant shift between dreams and realities. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck popped into my head when I noticed this motif. Lennie Small continually dreams about living on a farm with George, rabbits, and other animals. Although, the reality is that he is working at a factory with little pay and respect. Everyone in The Great Gatsby has a dream. Nick’s dream is to live in a judge-free and accepting society. Gatsby’s dream is to meet Daisy and spark up what they used to have. Daisy accepts her reality; she is comfortable with her life because she is wealthy since she married Tom. She accepts it, but that does not mean she is content with her surroundings. Daisy is ann accpetable wife, but Tom dreams of a better woman, he seeks for something different; hence why he has an affair with Myrtle Wilson. He was born into a lavish life; hence, financially he is comfortable. Myrtle’s dream is to be with a further successful and wealthy man. The fantasy life of Wilson consists of moving to a different location with Myrtle and starting a family in a nicer environment. …show more content…

Even though Daisy obviously admires Gatsby, she would never leave Tom because he provides her a safe lifestyle and she would also be frightened to leave him because he is strong and has the capability of abusing her or going even further than that. Wilson and Myrtle both die, so their dreams definitely don’t come true.
