Mount Everest
“Fear is courage, holding on a minute longer”. It means you shouldn’t give up on anything and keep trying. Tenzing Norgay is an example,he was fearful of climbing Everest but held on and was the first in history to summit.
Tenzing Norgay is one of the best mountain climbers of all time. Tenzing Norgay was the first person to summit Everest along with Sir Edmund Hillary. He summited during the John Hunt expedition. Norgay summited in 1953 at age 39. Norgay’s son Jamling Tenzing Norgay has also summited Everest. People die very often while attempting Everest, which in the 1950’s was called impossible, Norgay proved the challenge wrong. Norgay has attempted Everest five times and only summited during one of those attempts.
“Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is being afraid and doing it anyway.” This quote said by Lou Gehrig explains that courage isn't about having no fear; but rather, it is about one being filled with fear and deciding that something or someone is greater than that fear. In the book, The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, by Jamie Ford, the protagonist, Henry Lee, turns against the will of his father and his own country values to run after forbidden love. Even though Lee is afraid, he courageously proceeds to follow his heart.
The Courage to Change Ultimately the book, The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver, is about having courage and strength to better your life. Throughout the book, Taylor has taken many steps of courage to hopefully change her life for the better. Taylor left Pittman County to start a new beginning, she had the courage to take in a child like it was her own almost immediately after leaving Pittman County, and she risked her life to take Estevan and Esperanza with her to Oklahoma. “Courage doesn’t mean you don’t get afraid. Courage means you don’t let fear stop you.”
Fear is an emotional response made by a threat, which causes a change in brain and organ function, as well as behavior. It is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that something or someone is dangerous and likely to cause paint or threat. Usually fear is caused by something traumatizing that has happened in one’s life. In order to overcome fear, you have to face it. Avoiding fear prevents people from moving forward and standing up to fearful things help move past that fear. (Towey)
Nelson Mandela once said “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” This quote explains how we must overcome our fears to become courageous and brave. Joan Bauers realistic fiction short story “The Truth About Sharks” tells us this. One day a girl named Beth a 17 year old girl woke up to what she thought was just going to be an ordinary day. She had to go to the store and grab pants for a party. Sounds like an simple task, but not for Beth. As she was shopping she left all of her belongings in a changing room and was going to look for a shirt. She told a friendly salesperson named Hanne where she was headed. On the way she was
Nao Kao and Fuoa did everything for their daughter Lia and believed that by increasing their use of traditional medicine such as healing herbs from Thailand though expensive would contribute to her health. They also tried numerous other tedious remedies such as trying to suck out all her sickness by creating a vacuum with a heated cup that they would apply on her skin or through the rubbing of an egg until it turned black. They even tried changing Lia’s name to Kuo because “ a Hmong remedy believed that if a patient is called a new name, the dab who stole her soul would be tricked into thinking that she was someone else, and the soul would return” (111). The Lee’s went as far to make a three-day trip to visit a famous twiv neeb in Minnesota.
“With courage you will dare to take risks.” With bravery you will challenge yourself to the extreme. Tenzing Norgay risked his life to be the first to successfully summit Mt. Everest.
For years, negativity and bullying plagued schools around the globe. Schools implemented many anti-bully precautions. However, Roni Nocon, a Mesa Verde Middle School counselor, reformed the traditional cruel and unusual punishment policy. She wanted a positive event rather than an overused anti-bullying campaign. Furthermore, she wanted to transform the school’s bland assemblies into fun and interactive ones. “[We] can create a safe environment for our school… by taking a proactive and entertaining approach to stop bullying,” Nocon said. Therefore, she; Monica Racicot, the Mesa Verde’s After School Education and Safety Program director; and Stephanie Smith, former counselor; founded Kind Crew, a club working to eradicate harassment, and revamped
“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” A quote by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, during his inaugural address in 1933. At that time, America was in the Great Depression, and people needed a message to remind them that they will not get anywhere by being scared. What FDR meant in his quote was that trying new things, conquering obstacles is the right thing to do, and being to scared to try something is just unacceptable. The word ‘fearless’.
On May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the very first people to summit Mt. Everest, which was a lifelong goal. Mount Everest, part of the Himalayas which runs between Nepal and Tibet, towers majestically at 29,035 feet above sea level. Due to the Swiss almost reaching the top of Everest, the British organized an expedition with Colonel John Hunt in the lead. This expedition which lasted from April to May started at a Nepalese Monastery then went to the Khumbu Icefall, then to the Western Cwm, which leads to Lhotse Face. 26,000 feet up at the South Col, the first expedition team went climbing Everest but aborted due to their oxygen malfunctioning. John Hunt then sent out a second team which consisted of Edmund and Tenzing. After
There gave been many attempts to summit the mountain. Some have made it and others have died trying. On May 28, Tenzing and Hillary set out, setting up high camp at 27,900 feet. After a freezing, sleepless night, the pair plodded on, reaching the South Summit by 9 a.m. and a steep rocky step, some 40 feet high, about an hour later (Moore). On 29 May 1953, Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt (Turner). The Mallory expedition was also a very interesting expedition. On June 8th, 1924, Geroge Mallory, alongside his climbing partner Andrew Irvine, made his second attempt on the summit of Mount Everest ( Turner). They were spotted near the summit, they were on The second step only a few hours away from the summit ( Turner). It is unclear if they ever made it to the summit because they both were lost and eventually were presumed dead. A quote from George Mallory “The highest of the world’s mountains, it seems, has to make but a single gesture of magnificence to be the lord of all, vast in unchallenged and isolated supremacy” ( Mallory). As one can see Mount Everest can be a great accomplishment or a horrible
The name Nagoya is from a famous manor in the 12th century called Nagoya. Until the middle of the fourteenth century people continued to call the region “Nagona” long after it had gone. The Japanese characters used to write “Nagona” could also be read “Nagoya” which was later used as the city's name
Nerja is a classic Spanish beach resort on the Costa del Sol that has resisted the ambitions of developers allowing its centre to retain a traditional white-washed village charm.
Nandina (Nandina domestica) is also known as heavenly bamboo, although it has no relation to the bamboo plant. It takes the nickname from the fact that its foliage bears an uncanny resemblance to that of bamboo plants. Found in United States Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 6 through 9, nandina is a woody shrub with year-round interest. It bears flowers in the spring and berries in the fall when its foliage turns red, gold and orange. In warmer climates it is evergreen. One of the most important aspects of nandina care is annual pruning.
They have a set of rules called the Ordnung, which teaches order, discipline, rule arrangement, organization or system. Since they have no central church government, each community is govern by its own authority.
Edmund Hillary along with Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa, were the first individuals to summit Mount Everest in 1953. “Sherpas were Nepalese who lived in the Himalayas near Mt. Everest and knew the mountains well.” (Explorers) Numerous individuals had attempted to summit the mountain since 1920. For 33 years, mountaineers had been trying to reach the summit, but Edmund and Tenzing were the first to be successful.
