Terrorism : The Approach To The Game Theory Of Terrorism

Since after 9/11, the notion of terrorism has become abundant in the literature. Scholars and policymakers continue to seek optics to examine or scrutinize what can give rise to such a ‘‘degraded’’ act ignoble both in the national and global system. Viewed as a huge threat to the global stability, terrorism has been hashed out in the foreign policy by many states in search for best strategies to wipe it out in the face of earth.
Scholars such as Sandler and Arce M. have come up with the game of theory to (a) examine terrorism, and (b) provide some policy insights. In their game theoretical analyses, three models have presented to apply game theory to terrorism. These models include: (a) terrorists’ choice of targets for a three-player game involving two targeted nations and a common terrorist, (b) the situation where terrorists are really aware of their strength, and the targeted government must guess the terrorists’ resources based on the level of their attacks, and (c) the situation involving accommodation reached between terrorists and a host government. In laying out these three models, the Sandler and Arce M. have questioned the effectiveness of the no-negotiation strategy, which prevents a target government from negotiating or bargaining with any terrorist group. According to them, one of the drawbacks of this policy is that terrorist group continues to take hostage. In the light of this drawback, three suggestions have provided.
