One of the main points the movie Lincoln discusses is the 13th amendment and the war leading up to it, as well as all the behind the scenes' action that needed to take place in order for the amendment to be passed. The movie Lincoln gave me a new perspective on Lincoln's presidency as well as his personal life. It is easy to forget that people with a lot of power or fame are still humans with families and feelings. The movie helped show how much grief Lincoln and his wife had over their deceased son who had passed away. It helped me remember that even though Lincoln was a president and responsible for the whole country, he was first and foremost responsible for his family. Lincoln's character in the movie, which was played by Daniel

Twelve Years a Slave directed by Steve McQueen is a film that seeks to provide the experience of loss of freedom through which an increased understanding of the issue of slavery can open a gateway out of the denial that shields its audience from the discomforts of reality. Jonathan Jackson Jr wrote about the role of denial in culture in his foreword to the literary work Soledad Brothers stating “Denial is the easiest control mechanism, and therefore the most common.” What Jackson meant by this statement is that denial allows members of a culture, on the outside of an event or experience, to be willingly deceived and thus avoid the realities that do not wish to address. Denial creates an obstacle to understanding and the dissemination of information, particularly when the individuals seeking to protect their delusion belong to the a social or cultural majority. The reality of denial is just as true today as it was in the 20 years ago when Jackson wrote his foreword or many generations before that when slavery was still a reality in the United States.
12 years a slave based on Solomon Northup’s 1853 co-authored publication of his personal story as a kidnapping victim sold into slavery, the film expands on and sometimes detours from the book’s original narrative but also provides an extremely vivid and accurate portrayal of the antebellum South. It is incredible in its incorporation of so many facets of the slave system in this period—from the kidnapping itself, to the methods of enslavement, hiring out, the white class structure, the ways labor was used, life in the slave quarters. The film is a document not only of the trials of Northup and the millions of enslaved women, men, and children who lived through the horrors of bondage, but also serves as a document of where we stand as a culture today. This film is landmark in its holistic portrayal of the system of slavery in as an institution, culture, power structure, and moral blight. One of the things that makes the film so successful, but, is the particular emphasis it places on religion.
