Character Analysis
In the book there are a lot of characters, but the main characters are Santiago, The Alchemist, Fatima, Englishman and the Crystal Merchant. I am choosing to write the Analysis on Santiago, he is the protagonist. Santiago is a shepherd from Spain, he kept on having a recurring dream about a treasure in the Egypt. He was determined to find his treasure and learn about the world. His parents wanted him to become a priest, but instead became a Shepherd because of his desire to travel throughout the country. Santiago was hesitant at first, but it all changed when he met a king from Salem, he explained about omens and powers of nature. This quote was the inspiration “And dreams are the language of God. When he speaks in our language,
In my opinion Santiago, a shepherd boy from Andalusian town, changed the most in this novel. In the beginning of the story he was scared to trust in himself and follow his dreams. Santiago goes to the extent of searching for help from a gypsy. She tells him his meaning of his own dream and instead of trusting her he seeks another opinion. He goes on a journey across the Sahara to reach the Alchemist. When he asked The Alchemist how to turn himself into wind and he doesn’t get step by step instructions he is forced to trust his own judgement and intuition and believe in himself to figure it out. At the end of the story, he encounters a robber who talks to Santiago about his dream and why he would go on a journey across the Sahara. Santiago realizes
The book The Alchemist was about a young man named Santiago who followed his dream to discover a hidden treasure. As Santiago progressed throughout his journey, his character changed a lot. Santiago, a man who has great instincts, is afraid to trust his dream at the beginning of the book but over time becomes more and more confident with his choices in in this aspect he changes from the beginning of the book to the end.
No matter how different two people are from each other, they will always have something in common: they both have a dream that they want to follow. In Paulo Coelho’s novel, The Alchemist, this dream is known as a personal legend. The protagonist, Santiago, is a shepherd in Spain who has two dreams about finding treasure in Egypt. He realizes that finding this treasure is his personal legend, so he decides to pursue it. While on the journey to find his treasure, Santiago learns to never quit and to speak the Universal Language.
In the beginning, when I was reading the Alchemist, I wondered on how this novel could translate into fifty-six languages and sold over sixty-five millions of copies because the story was not appearing to me. The story begins about a shepherd, whose name is Santiago, talking to himself and his sheep all the time, and having a recurrent dream about there is a treasure at the Pyramid. It was a boring beginning. As the story continues to be dull until the old man, the king of Salem, tells the boy a that “..the world’s greatest lie [is] that at a certain point of our lives, we lose control of what's happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate” (Coelho, page 18). His conversation with the boy catches my attention, and makes me want
Some may refer to The Alchemist as a best-selling novel written by Paulo Coelho which explains the ideas of having a dream, or Personal Legend, and going through obstacles to conquer it. The book starts off like any other, introducing and describing the main characters, in this case Santiago is the first to share the interest of peers reading the story. He is said to be a small town shepherd boy who will do anything for his flock of sheep. In the opening scene of the story, Santiago takes his flock to an abandoned church and lies down under a sycamore tree hoping to get some rest. He is soon woken up from a disturbing dream which foreshadows further into the story of his own Personal Legend. Later in the book, Santiago is faced with multiple tests to be successful in finding his treasure. “Remember that wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure” (Coelho 15). Paulo continues to add characters in the book that help Santiago throughout his journey.
Santiago’s growth was inspiring to me. He has learned a great deal from action. He learns quite a lot about the land and his sheep by being a shepherd and paying attention to the world around him. His grandfather had mentioned to him a while back of an omen. “By traveling, watching and paying attention, the world will speak to Santiago to help him find is Personal Legend.” Through action, Santiago learns how easy it is to search for one’s Personal Legend. Everyone has their own way of learning things. For example when Santiago decides to try reading the Englishman’s book and he would try and read the signs of the desert. The boy does not learn a thing from the book and the Englishman learns nothing from watching the caravan. Just as Santiago
Santiago, the boy who was born in a priest’s family and was put up to become a priest. But ever since he had been a child,he had wanted to know the world ,and this was much more important than knowing about God and learning about mans’ sins.He summed up courage and told his father that he want travel all over the world and learn. He is a humble shepherd whose desires are few–he wants to be free to roam with his sheep, to have some wine in his wineskin and a book in his bag. Fate intervenes, however, in the form of the recurring dream of a great treasure hidden thousands of miles away at the base of the Egyptian Pyramids. When Santiago meets melchizedek, a strange wise man who claims he is a king from a far-off land, he decides to seek his treasure. The next day, Santiago sells his sheep and embarks to Africa to pursue his dream.
After asking around in the village about the alchemist tent, he decided to ask one more person before giving up, and then a young girl approaches near a well. When he first sees her he falls deeply in love. The girl introduces herself as Fatima, then Santiago asked about the alchemist."That’s the man who knows all the secrets of the world. He communicates with the Genesis of the desert" said Fatima. He spoke about his feeling he felt when he first saw her he said" I Want you to be my wife. I love you." During this time there is a war going on that is preventing Santiago from leaving Al-Fayoum. Santiago doesn’t want the war to end because if it does, that means he has to continue with his journey. Fatima and Santiago continue to see each other every day the time he was there. Fatima then confesses her love for Santiago. Fatima has been waiting her entire life for him but she wants him to continue his journey to his personal legend. She tells Santiago if they are meant to be together, they will meet again. Fatima was different in his eyes she was beautiful and encouraging. Santiago found some encouragement and support from a woman he loved to continue to follow his personal
Many people have dreams throughout their lives, but not very many people are able to achieve them. Santiago had dreams and throughout The Alchemist, he was fate. First, the boy's parents wanted him to be a priest. Santiago knew that, that's not what he wanted to do. Santiago wanted to travel the world and with the help of his sheep, he was able to. Second, the boy meets Melchizedek, who is the king of Salem. Melchizedek told Santiago about the Personal legends and about his treasure he was having dreams about. The king, however, would not tell Santiago how to get to his treasure unless he sold one- tenth of his sheep. Third, while the boy was traveling through Tangier, he worked for a crystal merchant. The longer Santiago worked for the
The alchemist knows all, understands the Soul of the World, knows the Master Work and has already achieved his Personal Legend. The alchemist comes into Santiago’s story to teach the boy how to become all he can be, and lead him to his Personal Legend. The alchemist tests and tutors Santiago with trials, such as being confronted about his omen, finding life in the desert, and turning himself into the wind. But due to the alchemist’s teachings, Santiago is able to accomplish these tasks. The alchemist says many wise things, such as “Before a dream is realized, the Soul of the World tests everything that was learned along the way.”
Do dreams really become reality or are our lives reliant on the dreams that do actually happen? In, The Alchemist a novel written by author Paulo Coelho’s we learn the story of a shepherd young of age by the name of Santiago and his journey where he discovers his own tale. On the way to uncovering the meaning of his dream Santiago meets several of different characters each portraying a different theme. Santiago was employed by a merchant for a little over a month when he offered to build a display case that would improve business and attract more customers. Although the owner was at first scared that his customers would not be delicate and bump into something causing it to break, Santiago manages to convince him and agrees with the omens.
In the novel, The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, Santiago is the protagonist who takes on this journey to discover more about his inner-self. This discovery within himself is referred to as the “Personal Legend”, which is a goal that someone wants to truly accomplish in order to be happy with either themselves or with their life. However, Santiago was not so sure of following his “Personal Legend” at the beginning of the novel; he seemed a bit hesitant about pursuing what he really wanted. As the story progresses, Santiago becomes more to realize that in life you need to step out of comfort zone in order to get to your destination. His journey through to desert to uncovering the treasure to the pyramids of Egypt is a metaphor for life because
Is there anything worth more than all of the diamonds in the world? To most people, no way. However, the happiest people in life know that the most valuable treasure lies in their heart. Throughout Santiago’s journey, he is able to learn a lot, meet important people, and accomplish many goals. He understands that the journey matters more than the final destination, and that the lessons he learns are worth far more than any amount of riches.
Santiago, a boy who was just a shephard, went through a journey that tested his limits and gave him an adventure that changed his life forever by changing his perception of taking risks to follow his destiny. Paulo Coelho the author of “The Alchemist” took simple, intelligent Santiago on a journey to find a treasure in the pyramids, but along the way Santiago finds himself in situations out of his comfort zone. From being robed of his money, to getting captured by Arab tribesmen. Through out the book these predicaments taught him that taking risks was okay, for the universe will help him when you’re following your destiny.
Santiago started with the desire to travel and being a shepherd was to way to fulfill this desire. He has traveled many miles and seen many cities with his sheep. His only concerns are the wellbeing of him and his sheep and the merchants daughter, which isn’t saying much. But as the story progressed, Santiago’s focus shifted. When he was in Tangier daydreaming about the pyramids and drinking tea, his focus was Arabic, the treasure, and how to get there. When he worked for the crystal merchant, his goals were to get money, return to Andalusia, and regain his flock. When Santiago was in the desert, his focus was the language of the desert, the safety of the caravan, and his treasure. When he arrived in the oasis, Fatima changed his focus again
