The ‘American Dream” has historically been one of the driving concepts in what success was supposed to look like in America. Many individuals and families from all over the world migrant to America simply because of this picture perfect “promise” of success and happiness. The “house with the white picket fence” mentality has been wildly spread throughout our society and as a result, a misconception about America has been created. The Great Recession represented a sharp decline in the economy. This occurred during the late 2000s and has been considered the largest and most tragic decline in the economy since the Great Depression. Its’ one thing if you buy a house and can afford to completely pay it off. However, many of us are not that fortunate. Mortgages can become a big burden to families. Another con is financial stability. In this day and age, it is hard to predict whether or not you will maintain a steady job or income over a long period of time. Many people tend to rush into home ownership without being financially stable. This can cause issues that may lead to potentially losing the home. There are many pros and cons to home ownership as a millennial. As a millennial, I believe that our idea of the “American Dream” has changed drastically. Because so many of us have experienced the great recession, I think we stray away from house ownership while we are young. The cost of a house in the past is not the same now. People could get by on one income while still paying a mortgage. That is virtually impossible now. According to Smart Asset researcher and journalist, Amelia Josephson, the average income of a millennial is about $35,000 a year. It is 20% lower than the average salary a baby boomer had at the same age. Millennials also have more debt than their parents had at their age. Because of this, it is almost impossible to expect Millennials to own homes at the rate in which generations before them have.
