The American dream is something everyone strived for. In the novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, one of the main themes was the American dream. In the book many of the characters pursued the America dream in hopes of personal fulfillment. Including Jay Gatsby, the main character, who in the end did not fulfill this dream. Fitzgerald suggests the American dream is a lie by depicting the characters as unhappy while trying to achieve it, while pursuing his American dream Gatsby ended up dead in the end, and the impact on the people in Gatsby’s life is that they ended miserable in the end. The effect of the American dream upon people was that they were unhappy. In the book, Fitzgerald’s characters were all very unhappy. Such as Tom and Daisy, who were both married in Fitzgerald’s book. “Neither of them can stand the other person they’re married to” (Fitzgerald 33). That quote was said by Catherine, Myrtle’s sister, talking about Tom and Myrtles marriages, and how miserable each was with their partners. Another character who never truly found fulfillment in the American dream was Jordan Baker. Although Baker wasn’t necessarily miserable like some other characters, she wasn’t necessarily happy either. The American dream affected real people as well such as how everyone strived to work their hardest in order the achieve the American dream however if they didn’t they blamed themselves rather than society and continued working towards a dream that wasn’t really in
