Edgar Allan Poe’s “Annabel Lee” is known as, “the simplest and sweetest of his ballads.” It is said to be widely recognized as one of the “great lyric poems of the English language.” (Mabbott 468). Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809 to traveling actors. Within only three years of his life, both of his parents passed away. John Allen and wife, Frances Valentine Allan, took him in. The wealthy tobacco merchants lived in Richmond, Virginia. Although Poe was fortunate enough to find a home, he was split from his brother and sister, who went to live with other families (https://poemuseum.org). All of Poe’s life, Mr. Allan urged him to be a part of the tobacco business, but Poe had little interest. He had always dreamt of being like his childhood hero, Lord Byron, famous British poet (https://poemuseum.org). Attempting to get away from Richmond, Poe left to attend the University of Virginia. There, he excelled academically, but money was an issue. Mr. Allan sent him with less than a third of the funds he needed, which left Poe to provide for himself. He had amassed a considerable amount of debt. Trying to continue his schooling, Poe took up gambling to raise money and pay his expenses. Despite his efforts, by the end of his first term, he had to burn his Young 2 furniture just to keep warm. He was then forced to drop out and return to Richmond (https://poemuseum.org).
