In the short stories “The Cask of Amontillado”, “ The Tell-Tale Heart”, “The Black Cat”, and “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe all decribes tension. Poe uses tone, characterization, and symbolism throughout multiple short stories to create tension. Poe’s emotions also create depression, anger, and suspense throughout the story.
To Begin, “ The Cask of Amontillado” shows characterization when the narrator acts suspicious to Fortunato. “The gait of my friend was unsteady, and the bells upon his cap jingled as he strode” (Edgar Allan Poe 3). This shows characterization, because it shows how devious Montresor is. Next, “The Tell-Tale Heart” shows characterization when the narrator takes his anger out on an old man. “Now this point you fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing” (Edgar Allan Poe 1). This shows that, the narrator takes his sensitivity to another level. First, in “The Cask of Amontillado” Fortunato starts to have drinking problems throughout the story. “Drink”, I said, presenting him the wine” (Edgar Allan Poe 3). This explains, how Montresor uses wine to blind Fortunato in order to kill him. Secondly, “The Tell-Tale Heart” shows a type of suspense in the story. “I think it wa his eye! Yes, it was this! He had the eye of a vulture-- a pale blue eye with a film over it” (Edgar Allan Poe 1). This explains, how the man took his emotions into a despiteful and unnatural way. Thirdly, “The Black Cat” explains how the man lived a regular family life. “We had birds, gold-fish, a fine dog, rabbits, a small monkey, and a cat” (Edgar Allan Poe 1). We are shown this as Poe sets the opening scene by writing that “It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season” (762). Here you are shown a very lively event where all the townspeople celebrate and come together. It is a joyous celebration full of life and happiness. Later on in the story, Montresor brings Fortunato to his family wine cellar and catacomb where they’re left completely alone, away from all life. One part of the cellar is described as
In 1846, ‘The Cask of Amontillado’ was written by Poe in which Montresor, the main character in the story, is plotting the death of his enemy, Fortunato, because he insulted him. In the scene where Montresor is tying up Fortunato specific imagery is deployed, “A moment more and I had fettered him to the granite. In its surface were two iron staples, distant from each other about two feet, horizontally. From one of these depended a short chain, from the other a padlock” (Poe, paragraph 71). This is highly effective because it inspires the imagination of how traumatic Fortunato’s fatal experience was as he was enchained. Poe’s description exhibits the extent of Montresor’s hatred. Poe’s use of vivid imagery adds to his particular style. Through this imagery, the reader witnesses how brutal Montresor was to Fortunato. He had talked about getting revenge initially but never explained his plan, leaving the reader to imagine until it is revealed. His style is conveyed by the imagery because as Montresor is slowly becoming an evil person, the story increases in suspense. ‘Tell-Tale Heart,’ a story of a man that kills someone, create uneasiness in the reader. The man slowly

Edgar Allen Poe’s tale of murder and revenge, “The Cask of Amontillado”, offers a unique perspective into the mind of a deranged murderer. The effectiveness of the story is largely due to its first person point of view, which allows the reader a deeper involvement into the thoughts and motivations of the protagonist, Montresor. The first person narration results in an unbalanced viewpoint on the central conflict of the story, man versus man, because the reader knows very little about the thoughts of the antagonist, Fortunato. The setting of “The Cask of Amontillado”, in the dark catacombs of Montresor’s wine cellar, contributes to the story’s theme that some people will go

One of the main rhetorical devices evident within the short story is the use of dramatic irony, which Poe uses to foreshadow the climax of the story, which is Fortunato's death. Edgar Allan Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado is thought to be one of his most popular vengeful short novels. The two main characters, Montresor and Fortunato are re-acquainted friends who meet each other at The Carnival. Montresor has intentionally planned to lure Fortunato to his own death by deceiving him to believe that Fortunato is coming to Montresor's family catacombs to taste a fine wine “Amontillado”. After Montresor leads Fortunato into the crypts, Montresor eventually chains Fortunato up in a secluded section and mortars him behind a brick wall while he is still alive. The story ends with Montresor throwing a flaming torch into the small opening while he continues to put the last brick in place, essentially burning Fortunato alive. Edgar Allan Poe creates conflict between characters Montresor and Fortunato which primarily creates the major theme of revenge in this story. Edgar Allan Poe depicts setting in this novel by portraying death by illustrating human bones, within a cold and damp crypt to contribute to the eerie theme of revenge.
