The Black, Liberal, Racist Of America, By Jordan Peele

Racism is a widely discussed topic, and everyone agrees that it is something that only causes harm. People with racist views can view others from other groups as people who are lesser than them and might use physically actions to show their dislike. In response to that, more and more people are having their own ideas of how to identify and end racism. For example, Kwame Anthony Appiah who brought out the idea of extrinsic racism, the perspective of utilitarianism, and the Kantian ethic are views that show why racism is wrong and how it can be ended.

I decided to analyze the film “Get Out” because I feel like it’s one of the best films out there. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a film that uses both comedy and horror at the same time while also talking about issues such as race, class and more. Watching the film in the movies, I was constantly on the edge of my seat worried about what’s going to happen next to Chris who is explained later on. I remember even when the audience at the movies were cheering along with characters in the movie which made it even more funnier but entertaining to watch. It’s not often you will see movies that talk about racial issues that are happening today because of the most of the time it’s about stuff from the past such as slavery.In addition, I also liked this film because I could somewhat relate to the main character. He was always apologizing and being understanding in situations that was not his fault but instead the other person which reminds of myself. It’s important for me to analyze this film because I believe there’s many symbols and hidden meanings that I didn't realize while watching the first time around which made me want to dig deeper.

The film opens with an African American, later revealed to be Andre, walking around at night in an upper middle class suburb. He is trying to get directions as a white car begins to follow him. It is discovered later in the film that the man in the car is Jeremy, Rose’s brother through the recurrence of the white car and knight’s mask near the end of the film when Chris is trying to escape. An important thing to note in this scene is the director’s use of film noir, which depicts the film’s use of low-lighting and not shots. At first watch, this scene appears to only serve to set up the eery vibe through film noir, but this vibe that director Jordan Peele is putting off is meant to remind the audience of the Trayvon Martin case. The book “The Other America”, written by Michael Harrington, describes poverty in America in the 1950s and 1960s, when America became one of the most affluent and advanced nations in the world. The book was written in 1962, and Harrington states that there were about 50,000,000 (about 25% of the total population) poor in America at that time. The author did extensive research with respect to the family income levels to derive the poverty numbers, and used his own observations and experiences to write this book. This book addresses the reasons for poverty, the nature of poverty, the culture of poverty, the blindness of Middle Class America with respect to poverty, and the responsibility of all Americans in addressing the issue of poverty in America.

In his directorial debut, Jordan Peele steers away from his comedic reputation to make the suspenseful thriller that is Get Out. The film is very intriguing and keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat throughout from start to finish as you follow Chris Washington, a young african american man, who travels with his white girlfriend to her family’s house when he uncovers a dark secret. For the typical fan of horror/thriller, it's a must see.

During the Civil Rights Era, many black power movements strived to prevent the New Jim Crow from happening. The black man was being oppressed during segregation and treated like animals. The white supremacy, only visualize African Americans as slaves, people who should not be a part of the United States. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X drove men and women to fight for his or her rights. However, that was not enough to stop the white supremacy from oppressing African Americans. The Civil Rights movement did put an end to public segregation. It did not put not put an end to the laws being made by the government, which is dominated by the white race. In the book, The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander discussed how the Civil Rights and black power movements helped African Americans gain their equal rights, but did not help to gain political power. Mass Incarceration is where the African Americans’ lives end because of the social structure created by the government. Blacks are mostly in the lower class because after the Great Depression, Roosevelt only created laws for whites. This allowed the white community to build and move out the cities into better neighborhoods. Leaving the black community behind. The government placed businesses and built big buildings to keep all the blacks in one place. Base on how the black community was viewed as a race and social status, gives this race a higher chance of being behind bars.

The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander tries to advance intellectual dialogue regarding mass incarceration in the United States. Alexander does this by carrying out a historical analysis of the process in which the correctional system controls African Americans through intentionally selected, and systematically sanctioned legal limits. In fact, the United States incarceration rate is not at peak by coincidence. Moreover, it is not coincidental that Black men and women make up the majority of this number. According to Alexander, this problem is a consequence of the “New Jim Crow” rules, which use racial stratification to eliminate black individuals in the legal sense. Black people and a small number of the Hispanic community face racial stratified laws when they face the justice system. This paper will support the claims that race is a major factor in the incarceration of black men in the United States, which includes the Jim Crow system, the slave system and the drag war. This process will also involve analyzing of some of the arguments presented within the book.

White privilege is the societal privileges that specifically benefit white people. White privilege is why white people can get pulled over by the police and escape a ticket with just a smile and apology. White privilege is also why whites are in charge of a company and they see a black person, they bypass the application. Whites carry a certain privilege not available to people of color. The book, The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander is about the mass incarceration of African Americans in the criminal justice system. It depicts individuals who were arrested on drug crimes. Because these individuals are labeled as criminals, it becomes difficult for them to find work, housing, and public assistance. (Alexander, 2010) The themes in this book include denial and ignorance, racism and violence, and drugs.

The main character of Get Out is an African American male named Chris Washington. From Chris’s perspective, we see the narrative unfold and many uncanny events occurring that he experiences throughout the film. Chris is visiting and meeting his white girlfriend, Rose Armitage’s parents for the first time. Rose’s parents are a neurosurgeon and hypnotherapist. Everyone attempts to make Chris feel welcome, after acknowledging the fact that Rose never told them he was African American. Get Out connects a castration anxiety to racism when Rose’s family meets Chris, not knowing that he is black.

GET OUT! This loud exclamation is heard numerous times in the enthralling and suspenseful horror flick, Get Out, released in late 2017. Producer, Jordan Peele, sets the scene with a young happy couple heading to the girlfriend’s—Rose Armitage (Allison Williams)—parent’s secluded lake house for the weekend for a family get together. Rose’s parents are quite liberal and professional folk who are in the dark about Chris’s race and Rose’s brother is just plain disturbing. After a long day of driving, the couple finally arrives at the Armitage’s home right about dusk.
