Currently ,The “Black Lives Matter” movement is failing, and they could learn a lot from the Civil Rights Movement that took place in the 1950s. The Civil Rights Movement proved that in order to make change through protest a group must have a brand, and a clear and respected leader. The current “Black Lives Matter” movement lacks these aspects but they can be obtained through reorganization. All civil rights movement have a brand. A brand dictates the social habits of a group, and when someone joins a group they are socially pressured into following the habits created by the brand. A brand causes peer pressure, and peer pressure causes a widespread adoption of a social habit that is dictated by brand ,which facilitates peer pressure. This …show more content…
When you create a brand you create a social habit that naturally urges people to do what you want them to do. However, the Black Lives Matter Movement has no such brand. A brand must be clear and concise to serve the function of easily understanding a movement. The Black Lives Matter movement merely has a philosophy that is not well known and cannot be easily explained. While the peaceful protest was widely accepted as habit and norm during the boycott of 1955, the Black Lives Matter Movement has no widely accepted belief. In a matter of fact, Brittany Packnett , a well known Black Lives Matter protester was interviewed by Time Magazine and was quoted saying “ we are diverse in belief”(http://time.com/4178280/black-lives-matter-2016/). Despite their common goal, the members of the Black Lives Matter movement have different beliefs! Unification is a side effect of adopting a common social habit throughout history success has been achieved through unification: the revolutionary war, the civil war, and the civil rights movement. …show more content…
Throughout the civil rights movements Martin Luther King Junior is often looked upon as the leader and representative of the ideology behind the civil rights movement. He was well known by both his members and his enemies. During the Montgomery Bus Boycott, he was identified as the leader by bothe his peers and his enemies, he was attacked by the whites, and looked to for guidance by the blacks. When his house was bombed, he reminded his followers of the importance of peaceful protest, essentially he reinforced his brand by saying. In a time when “the commitment of Montgomery's black community began to wane.”(Duhigg 239) Martin Luther King showed how an excellent leader can revitalize a movement through powerful speaking and a brand. The theme of the Civil Rights Movement was defined by the leader for all to hear that day “‘We must love our white brothers, no matter what they do to us.”( Duhigg 240). The brand changed, and Martin Luther King showed how powerful a leader can be when given the responsibility to guide a movement to success. The greatest thing a Leader can offer is guidance, and Martin Luther King understood the overarching goal of the civil rights movement and guided his followers to that goal. The Black Lives Matter does not have this guidance. Sometimes a narrow corridor is the only thing leading to the light, but The Black Lives Matter movement seem to think that this
A necessary and common fight for equality has been one that has survived throughout all of man’s existence. Due to recent racial divide and the product of racial profiling, a movement has risen up to combat these common issues. The most recent and most well-covered is the Black Lives Matter Movement. Even though it has been lauded by some media sources and individuals as the next great movement to champion for civil rights, the Black Lives Matter movement is not the same as the African-American Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s nor is it likely to be as successful. If the Black Lives Matter Movement continues with discrepancies in ideology, lack of clear leadership, and trends of hate, the movement is doomed to fail.
The Black Lives Matter (BLM) Movement is a movement against police brutality. This movement began after 17-year-old boy, Trayvon Martin was fatally shot, and his killer, former police officer, George Zimmerman was acquitted for the crime. (BLACKLIVESMATTER.COM) As Black Lives Matter has continued to make a difference through peaceful protests on a mass scale , such as kneeling during the national anthem at sporting events or peaceful protests after a shooting. Many have claimed that the movement is extremely offensive, against police officers, or that African Americans are claiming superiority over other races, while others continue to support the movement. The fight between Blue Lives Matter, All Lives Matter, and Black Lives Matter continuously strikes violent riots, but the question still stands- what is the Black Lives Matter movement really trying to accomplish?
Black Lives Matter is an international activist movement that started within the African-American communities. This movement is organized by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi. Ever since the black people have stepped on American soil, they have continued to be victims of racism and violence. From slavery to lynching to segregation, the black people have suffered alot in this country. In the past few years, there are so many of them that have been targeted by the law enforcement authorities across the country. This movement’s goal is to raise awareness of racism and violence against African-Americans. They wants African-American to live with dignity and respect like other Americans do.
For decades black Americans have been treated as animals, looked at as if they are monsters, and killed like bugs. Actions like Police brutality and racism is what caused Black Lives Matter. The creation of the Black Lives Matter was a response by the black community to give a voice to black Americans affected by the increase of wrongful deaths due to the law enforcements and vigilantes across the country. This has been going on for so long that it seems like we are stuck in the past. For years, even decades black Americans have had to live the struggle of being equal. Even when things are going good and we think we finally have the same rights, something happened to change that. It is time to shed a light on the real purpose of Black Lives Matter and why they are important to today's society.
understand you must look at the Civil Rights movement, how the Black Lives Matter movement
In the United States, there has been many cases of Racial injustice. From the beginning of the start of the United States of America it was the injustice to the Native Americans being captured and used for slave labor while their bison be slaughtered for sportsmanship. But this paper is on the specific race of the African Americans. There are many races that have been racially profiled and ostracized by the English people. But the treatment that African Americans have endured even till this day is disheartening. African Americans have gone through enslavement during the early 1600’s to the mid 1800’s. Then the African Americans were obstructed by the Jim Crow laws creating the ‘Separate but Equal” propaganda during the late 1800’s into the 1960’s. After the abolishment of the Jim Crow Laws, people were considered equal until the recent actions of many police officers using deadly force on African American youths in the early 2000’s.
Social movements are vital to the establishment of our societies, and they way we are governed. Social movements help the less privileged band together to create a stronger voice among a sea of political correctness and unlawfully rule that the public supposedly have to abide by without question. Movements create this new form of platform that, if done successfully, are able to create a worldwide frenzy where people from across all walks of life, including politicians, academics, the less fortunate, the homeless, doctors, etc, are able to come together to create change, or to start to create change on a matter that is close to their hearts. One of these matters that has come up in recent years that has been an ongoing battle for centuries upon centuries is Black Lives Matter (Although named various things throughout time such as black civil rights). Black Lives Matter is a movement that started back in 2012 after George Zimmerman was acquitted for his crime against a 17 year old boy named Trayvon Martin, and Trayvon was then put on trial for his own murder (Garza, A. 2014, p. 1.). This crime was just the tipping point for three women who wanted to see a change in the way black lives were/are treated. Black Lives Matter is one of the most important socio-political movements of our time, and this is why it is an important movement to connect with and understand. Throughout, I will be going through the strategies and the tactics Black Lives Matter advocates and cofounders have
Martin Luther King Jr.’s effective policy of non-violence. Furthermore, the “Black Lives Matter” movement’s disruptive protest and impassionate public mission statement speeches about the persistent purpose of racial inequality have been disconcerting to many Americans who wonder what the real message for this new generation of civil rights protests are, and if their arguments, tactics, and cause is effective and productive to inciting change. To many times their stances have appeared contradictory and hate filled because of their lack of specific purpose and a central governing body. Responding to this criticism, Black Lives Matter leaders assert this is, “not your grandfather’s civil-rights movement,” to distinguish its tactics and its philosophy from those of nineteen-sixties-style activism. However, despite insinuating they are not typical of older civil rights movements they frequently allude to past civil rights
The Black Lives Matter movement began in 2013 after George Zimmerman was found not guilty of the murder of 17 year-old Trayvon Martin. About a year after Martin’s death, an 18 year-old unarmed male, Michael Brown, was shot and killed by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. That sparked weeks of protests. Years later, Asians, Latinos, and some whites joined in and realized how big of a problem this was becoming. As the years go by, the BLM Movement will keep growing and will not go
Second, the Black Lives Matter movement must determine the opposing side’s argument as morally corrupt before rebelling. Movements like the Civil Rights Movement or the Pro-Choice Movement fights for human rights because of our moral obligation as a society and as a people to treat others in a humane manner. In addition to the opposing side being morally wrong, the arguer, more importantly, needs to be absolutely convinced that he/she is morally right. For example, different church denominations do not get in violent doctrinal disputes. They have their disagreements, but not on the basis that the other doctrine is morally wrong. However, certain denominations are absolutely convinced of their own position and as a result, groups of people
Some people view the black lives matter movement as hate group that excludes other races simply due to the way their phrase is framed , as a result there have been people whom have opposed this social movement organization. The counter movement “All lives mater” has been thrown into the conversation when people have mentioned the black lives movement. In my opinion, one of things I wish would change about the black lives matter movement is the name. I wish that the movement could be called “black lives matter too”. This change would not only resonate largely with African Americans but would bridge a relationship with other ethnic minority groups who have also dealt with injustice and police brutality. Having this sort of frame alignment will allow the movement to advocate that it more of inclusive movement oppose to exclusive movement that values only the lives of black people and not other races. In the book Social Problem, author Joel Best states “In contemporary America, much social movement revolves not around convincing individuals to dedicate their lives to activism or even around organizing thousands of people to march in the streets, but around fundraising” (Best 76). I believe allowing people to feel more inclusive in the black lives matter movement will increase their resources mobilization. The number of members will increase as well as their economic capital which will allow them to fund
The black lives matter movement can be deliberated to be a new social movement as it looks at some of the actions which are grounded by policy making and the ideology as the root of collective action. A procedures that fits into this movement is the Collective Behaviour Theory. The theory refers to the events that emerge suddenly and don’t often conform to the laws or rules but as in alternative which is often base on the issues at hand. For instance the Black Lives Matter movement came together as a community as their collective identity matches one another. (Being African American or loosing someone to police violence) This also fits under ‘Grass-roots’ as it is driven by the ‘locals’ who are often
EVEN IN THE SPLINTERED AND OFTEN FRACTIOUS world of social justice movements, Black Lives Matter doesn't fit easily into existing categories. Few grassroots uprisings have done as much, in such a short period of time, to focus attention on long-neglected issues of racial justice, gender, and economic inequality. Yet so far, BLM has not followed up on its initial victories by building the kind of lasting, hierarchical organizations that grew out of the civil rights movement; nor has it dedicated itself to a single, easily identifiable goal, like enacting the Voting Rights Act. How are we to make sense of organizers who themselves remain so loosely organized? And if Black Lives Matter isn't devoting itself primarily to bringing about substantive legal and legislative change, then how can it hope to transform its resistance into lasting and meaningful gains in human rights?
The Black Lives Matter movement has swept across America. It 's branched out with chapters in over 31 cities and held rallies and boycotts across the United States(Sidner). The Black Lives Matter movement started with the outrage of the death of a young man. It continues to take over headlines and raise awareness on police brutality and inequality. However, the movement has met resistance from the All Lives Matter group. This group thinks that Black Lives Matter is a movement to express hatred towards other races. However, statistics, the views of fellow citizens, and the overall purpose of the Black Lives Matter movement, can prove that the movement wasn 't meant to express hate on other races and that we need to support the movement instead of going against it.
Why did the Black Lives Matter movement begin? How did it come about? Is systematic oppression towards blacks a real enough issue in the United States in order for them to raise concern? Along with police brutality? And discrimination? They simply cannot just be made up concepts. For that reason, Black Lives Matter was coincidentally created. Black Lives Matter is a social movement that desires to bring attention that black lives matter, too. I believe the movement wants to acknowledge that black people too deserve the justice they are currently not receiving. The Black Lives Matter movement, being as pro-black as it is, does not and will never mean another race is valued less than that of a black life. The movement simply wants to gain
