For The Book Thief Essay, the theme I picked was “The true nature of courage”. The reason I picked this specific theme was because I felt like I can relate to it more than the other themes. There are plenty of examples where different characters display courage, when at times they could have shied away. The first couple of examples that come to my head is when Hans paints the over the slurs, or when Rudy and Liesel give the jews bread. Thesis statement: The Book Thief has very courageous characters, but they aren't as courageous as I would be in their situation.

Relationship to meaning: Death is important to the story because he provides a detailed explanation of what is going on with all characters and he isn’t bias towards any specific character.

In The Book Thief, a work of historical fiction, written by Markus Zusak introduces the main character Liesel Meminger, the reader starts to see how she keeps having many conflicts but always stays positive. Liesel has many conflicts, for example her brother dies early in the book and that shapes the way she is. Later on Liesel steals books and that makes her happy because the first book she stole was the grave digger's handbook and that is how she remembers her brother. Liesel steals and reads books this is how she finds happiness with all the bad things going on around her. In the end of the book most of the people she loves die and it is hard for her to find happiness again. The author uses the setting and point of view to express theme and to make the reader feel sympathy; He uses this because with the theme of finding light in the darkness, deaths perception, and the setting of Germany makes the theme clearer.

In The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, words can be very powerful. Words can either break a person down or build them up. There are several examples in this story where words either bring people together or tear them apart. While words prove to both heal and hurt in this story, the healing words leave a longer and lasting mark on the person that is being healed, while the damaging ones do less to hurt than the comforting ones do to help.

There are many books that will teach you important lessons. In The Book Thief by Markus Zusak there are many lessons to be learned. Some of the lessons that the book teaches is that courage is the key to achieve anything, fear can be distracted, and Death’s kindness. These lessons are important to learn.

But I did it anyway. For my first quarter two book report (no thanks to those stupid plagiarizers), I read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. In this book, we are told a story narrated by Death himself in Nazi Germany during WWII. The story that Death gives is of a little girl named Liesel, who at the age of nine, was taken away from her mother - the book hints that she was a “communist” - and had her six year old brother die on the train to Molching. Talk about a rough day.

The book she steals is called the Book Thief and it was by Liesel Meminger. Death finds this book being thrown in the back of a garbage truck, but she saves it. The book got there when it was forgotten on the road after Liesel saw her mama, papa, and Rudy lying there dead. The book was picked up by a man and thrown in the back of the truck. The whole book that was just read was death reading the book she had stolen and adding what she had seen during some of the parts. In my opinion, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak was a very interesting book with a great plot. It is actually one of the best books I have ever read. It shows that words affect life more than we may realize. From the books Liesel stole, to the book that lead Max to the Hubermann's, words and books really do have a major impact on life, both positively and negatively.
