Susan Cain’s Ted Talk The Power Of Introverts brought a new conversation to society in how introverts are treated. Five years ago (when this took place) this topic was not very well discussed, which made this piece very eye opening for some. Using Aristotle's appeals: logos and pathos, as well as a comparative argument in her ted talk, Cain persuades viewers that we as a society oppress/shame introverts, not allowing them to strive or be themselves in our now extroverted society. She advocates for a more balanced society that serves both introverts and extroverts instead of just extroverts.

In the story “The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle with connections” the main idea of this story so far that I read is that they are going on a boat ride with a family.Mr.Grummage was a y’all man who wore a black frock coat with a stove pipe hat that added to his considerable height. The person that is telling the story asked a lot of questions and obviously had a relationship with Mr.Grummage and they were some what family or real close friends. We can infer that she is a child because in the first chapter she stated that she wanted to say goodbye to her chaperone and she kept saying she had to say good. Some strange man was listening to their conversation and heard that the captain name was Jaggery. The man was scared of the captain because
Everyone has experienced a dark moment in their lives. It is in these dark moments that turn out to be the most profound. In the story “Our Secret” by Susan Griffin, it talks about the connection of the past lives of those in Nazi Germany and about Griffin’s own family. Griffin has also talked about an artist named Kathe Kollwitz. Kathe Kollwitz has created many self portraits relating and expressing the emotions of the people of Nazi Germany. During this time, many people have gone through hardships such as poverty and war. Through poverty some may have experience or gone through some emotional situations. During war, people may have lost someone close to them or even the peace they had before the chaos have occurred. Griffin has related a painting by Kollwitz with her personal life. In the story, Griffin is trying to portray through this connection how people feel emotionally and physically in the midst of war and violence.
Cathy N. Davidson suggests an innovative education system, providing an emphasis in today’s digital era, and claiming that the existing education system needs to be renewed according to the new expectations of the digital era. Davidson states that,” In the last half century, many changes have occurred in the technology field, however, classrooms and educational methods have remained fairly steady for the past years as well in consequence students are not being prepared for the future advances of society.” That being said, it is important to improve and to give a change to the current educational methods, adjusting them to the existing demands of the era that we are living and taking advantage of the resources that it provides. “What if we continued to the lesson of internet itself,
Belonging to a certain group is a natural experience in the lives of individuals. Groups are categorizable by a variety of options but often expel a trait that epitomizes each individual within the group such as rank, societal merit, or simply just appearance. Behaviorism gratifies purpose within cohort mentality among those in an association due to the psychological commonalities that bring these groups together. When it comes to an individual's development within a certain group, joint mentality helps create a safe environment but often times supports ideologies of self empowerment. Anthropologist Karen Ho composes the analysis of students whom graduate Ivy League universities and enter into financial professions, in her essay “Biographies
John Singleton Copley’s a Bostonian Anglo-American Painter who lived in the late 1700s to early 1800s. One of Copley’s most infamous works of art is the painting, “Mrs. Richard Skinner.” This painting is noted in being a woman named Dorothy Wendell (Dorothy Quincy). Dorothy Wendell came from a reputable family “Quincy family” and was wed to John Hancock, a well-known political figure. Copley is trying to convey the struggles of women during the eighteenth century and the yearn for equal rights which are reflected on the subject Mrs. Richard Skinner. This is shown through the way Copley expresses and emphasizes Mrs. Richard Skinner femininity. This painting was created in 1772, in the midst of the American Revolution, which is usually
The two poems I chose to analyze were “Curandera” by Pat Mora and “Loose Woman” by Sandra Cisneros. They were an interesting read and made sure to reread several times to make sure I got everything I could from them. Both poems are so unique from other poems I have read; they are also unique from each other yet share similarities as well.
In my perspective Susan has changed. I say this due to the fact that, when she first married Kane she did everything he said and basically bowed down to his command. He always over powered her no matter what she said of did. For example, when he wanted her to sing but she didn’t want to. Kane made her do shows and he wrote a bad review of her because he didn’t want anyone else doing it. He forced her to do this to the point where she almost got away with suicide. Another example shows him overpowering hers when his shadow dominated her when she was explaining to him she didn’t want to sing anymore. Due to her not wanting to sing he moved them both to a mansion in Florida and she didn’t have any company or anyone to talk to, all there was to
Cormac McCarthy’s novel, Suttree, demonstrates the prejudice deeply ingrained within society, as well as the way it largely affects its readers. The misogynistic attitude is certainly not a new one. Women have been oppressed and viewed as less than men, in personal accounts and in narratives, for a long time. In the minds of the men in this novel, women are seen as merely an addition to men or an afterthought, and certainly not able to hold the value of a whole person on their own. The only real relationships with women the reader observes are Cornelius Suttree’s romance with Wanda, and then with Joyce. The lens through which Suttree views women is skewed, hostile and distrustful. He consistently views women as either irrational, emotional, or as purely sexual objects. There are many examples of the twisted language used to describe women, from Suttree’s wife, to his mother, to waitresses in restaurants, to these women with which he is intimate.

In Safari by Jennifer Egan, Egan brings up the topic of relationships and their structures quite often. Egan even defines many of Mindy’s personal terms, which describe her interactions with others. Such terms as Structural desire, Structural resentment, Structural Dissatisfaction, are brought up often as Mindy describes her relationships with Lou, Albert, and herself. Mindy goes through lots of struggles and challenges while trying to maintain these partnerships. These kinds of relationships can be applied outside of the story; to show how these kinds of relationships can affect us in negative ways. Mindy has a completely different perspective by the end of the story. She also has all new relationships with Lou, Albert, and herself. In Safari, Mindy has many complex relationships throughout the text that change and evolve, as she also grows as a person.
Susan McClary’s scholarly article, A Musical Dialect from the Enlightenment: Mozart’s Piano Concerto in G Major, K. 453, Mvt. 2, starts off with her recalling a time after watching a performance of the concerto with a colleague and the two of them confessing different opinions about the soloist’s performance. McClary, who liked the performance, notes that soloist articulates “unusual compositional strategies indicated in Mozart’s texts”. The argument ends with the two not only about the piece and Mozart, but also about the significance of the eighteenth-century. McClary’s article attempts to critique the perfection of Mozart’s works.
