The Cask Of Amontillado Irony

Satisfactory Essays

What type of irony does Edgar Allan Poe predominately use in "The Cask of Amontillado"? How does the irony affect the overall tone of the story? In "The Cask of Amontillado," Edgar Allan Poe implements dramatic irony to had a dark sense of humor to the story. The narrator, Montresor, addresses the audience directly and informs them of his plan to murder Fortunato, while Fortunato himself is completely unsuspecting. Montresor continually voices his concern for Fortunato's health, to which Fortunato says "'I shall not die of a cough," (393). Montresor acknowledges this as being true, which is ironic because the reader knows that indeed Fortunato will not die of a cough, but that he is to be killed at the hands of Montresor.
