Statistically, for every 100,000 people in the U.S., there are roughly 5.1 intentional murders. While intentional murders don’t relate very much to writing, they do relate to “The Cask of Amontillado”. More specifically, the tone of Poe’s story. Throughout the story, the tone is slightly obscured, which means it requires more in-depth analysis. The tone appears to be more gloomy and sinister. Reasons such as word choice, descriptions, and the use of certain phrases help make the tone more evident. Analyzing the tone to the story can help provide both a more in-depth understanding, and it can help in understanding more of Poe’s works in the future. Throughout Poe’s writing, “The Cask of Amontillado” specifically, he portrays a dark and gloomy tone through the use of word choice. One example of this would be: “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge” (Poe 233). One, for example, is: “He had a weak point”(Poe 234). The only reason Montresor would note this is if he is planning something menacing. In addition to this, “the supreme madness” (Poe 234) also highlights Montresor’s view on the time. He appears to be using the madness to his advantage. Nobody could ever suspect him of something during it. It is, again, sinister. In conclusion, Poe offers a variety of methods for portraying tone throughout “The Cask of Amontillado”. One of which being through the use of word choice, another being through the use of descriptions, and a last being through the use of phrases. Techniques such as this could be used in both future writings, and for analyzing past texts.
