The Characteristics Of A Hero : Othello As A Tragic Hero

“It is a man’s own mind, not an enemy or foe, that lures him to evil ways.” (Buddha). In life there are all sorts of heroes. Some will arise whenever they have been called for. It may even be these everyday heroes that are rescuing animals or even helping an elderly walk across the street. Sometimes the heroes that are found in the movies we watch and the books that we read are the ones rescuing the princess. At times it may just be the most rare type of hero of all time which is the tragic one(s). The well known William Shakespeare has done a good job at artfully crafting prominent tragedies with their tragic heroes. While having one of the greatest and most well-known tragic heros of all time being Othello. Othello is a wise man although, he is the reason for his own self destruction because of his noble traits, his tragic flaws, and his tragic downfall that have in the end caused him to be his biggest enemy. For someone to be or become a tragic hero, whether it may be in novels or in real life they first have to be somewhat of a noble character. Othello is at times often considered a noble character the reasoning has to do with his high social rankings and kind/genuine heart. Despite him coming from a tough background and past, he is known as an honorable (war) hero along with being the general of the Venetian army. Even with the social stature that Othello has, he also has a noble heart. As a wise man once said “a genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus.” (Martin Luther King, Jr.). Even though he is portrayed as a violent character, Othello’s kind and loving nature are noticed when he is seen in situations like when he speaks to his friends about Desdemona. All of these traits mentioned can be and are greatly admired among the characters of ”Othello” including the character of Iago, the one admitting that Othello is “of a constant loving, noble nature (and) will prove to Desdemona a most dear husband” (2.1.290-292). Othello’s nobility is very much so noticed, although, Othello does have some traits that are or can be viewed to be tragic flaws. He is a tragic hero because of all his tragic flaws.
