The story of Beowulf is one of the worlds most important poetic works. The manuscript of the work in its entirety is dated as far back as the year 1000, but the poem itself dates back much farther in oral form (107). Beowulf is an Old English poem displaying characteristics of medieval English culture, particularly on “its ability to integrate pagan Germanic history within the framework of the Christian Middle Ages” (107). The story is set in the sixth century, and at this time it was the beginning of Germanic tribes settling in England. This poem’s focus is on Beowulf, a member of the Geats, who fights three entities at different times throughout the poem (108). Beowulf was granted / the glory of winning; Grendel was driven / under the fen-bands, fatally hurt , / to his desolate lair” (130). Beowulf returns with the good news and King Hrothgar celebrates the victory by showering Beowulf in gifts and a feast. Unfortunately for Beowulf, Grendel’s mom was aware that he had killed her son, and she was full of vengeful rage (108). Grendel’s mom’s incessant need to avenge her son’s death is the cause of Beowulf’s second altercation. Grendel’s mother sought to attack Heorot when everyone was sleeping after the celebration, but she became nervous when they awoke and fled back to her lair. Some of Beowulf’s warriors follow her back to her lair, a cave under a nearby lake and Beowulf challenges her to a fight. Beowulf was prepared and confident that he would win, “He got ready, / donned his war-gear, indifferent to death; / his mighty, hand-forged, fine-webbed mail / would soon meet with the menace underwater” (145, lines 1442-1444). He battles her, and in stealing one of her swords, slays her, despite her blood melting the blade away. Beowulf returns to the shore victorious, with the head of Grendel’s mom and the handle of the sword he severed it with. King Hrothgar is very pleased with Beowulf, and once again they celebrate.
