Can something so sweet like chocolate be the reason for someone's demise? The Chocolate War, by Robert Cormier follows the story of a young boy named Jerry Renault not wanting to participate in his prestigious Catholic High School chocolate sale. However, this decision has dire consequences. This novel illustrates the theme of power and how it is used to psychologically manipulate and threaten the students of the school. Power and manipulation are explored throughout the book, from the characterisation of Brother Leon and Archie, to the conflict. Brother Leon's character has always been seen as someone with a lot of power. In the novel, Brother Leon can assert control over the situation with this line, "You're a cheat Bailey. And a liar of …show more content…
This quote directly tells the audience how Archie is using manipulation to get another guy to feel less about himself. Power and manipulation are widely recognised due to it being one of the main conflicts in the novel. Throughout the book, Jerry refuses to sell chocolates due to Archie's influence on him. We can see Archie's influence from the following line, "Want to get back Renault?... Strike back to the sand. Get a bit of revenge. Show them what you think of their goddamn chocolates." It contradicts how Archie is trying to play the good cop, even though he is the reason for this ordeal. The line is able to confirm that Archie is the manipulator behind the whole storyline and how he is trying to use his power to essentially make it worse. Another prime example of conflict being present is from this popular line which is a direct metaphor to the school, "Do I dare disturb the universe?" This illustrates how Jerry is the cause for the whole imbalance in the school hierarchy, essentially ruining the power dynamics in the school. This is able to express the idea that the whole "universe" is disturbed due to Jerry's resistance to the manipulation and unfair power

The Chocolate War Essay “You see Carter, people are two things: greedy and cruel.” (Cormier, 241) This quote said by Archie in The Chocolate War shows us the type of person Archie is. This quote not only describes the type of person Archie is it describes Brother Leon as well. Archie and Brother Leon are both very manipulative between abusing their powers and doing wrong things. Archie is the Assigner of the Vigils and is in position of power which causes students the be afraid of him. Archie and
corrupts... perhaps the fear of a loss of power” (John Steinbeck). This quote directly compares to the book, The Chocolate Wars that tells an extraordinary story about a boy, Jerry Renault who rebells against the dictators of the school, The Vigils and the corrupted staff. Jerry’s rebellion leads him to his doom in an organized fight watched by the school showing the student body how dangerous power really is. In the book, The Chocolate War, the author, Robert Cormier portrays the uneasy lesson of how simple
Am Your Father” The fifth movie in Star Wars titled The Empire Strikes Back you hear Luke Skywalker saying “Luke, I am your father”. However he does not say that. He actually says “No, I am your father”. But everyone seems to remember it as the first quote. Crazy right? Example 3- C-3PO Isn’t Completely Gold Think about the droid C-3PO from Star Wars. What color is he? If you said gold then you are correct. Or are you? If you go back and watch the Star Wars movies than you will see that C-3PO’s left

Like Water For Chocolate is a feminist novel because the two main characters in the novel exhibit characteristics that represent what a feminist is. Feminism is the belief that women and men should have equal rights and opportunities. Tita and Gertrudis show through their behavior, actions, and language that they believe that women should be able to live a life with the same rights and opportunities as men. The first reason Tita supports my belief that Like Water For Chocolate is a feminist novel

In the novel The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier, the characters are over exaggerated, to state a clear point that this is not a normal story. The story does not follow a regular story line, but one that Robert Cormier decides is fit in his mind and he over exaggerates it aswell for an effect to state his point that, not every time you disturb the universe something good comes out. Robert Cormier wanted the characters be different, he did not make them how others wanted, being socially acceptable
“Do I dare disturb the universe?” This was the message posted inside Jerry’s locker in the Novel The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier. Like Jerry, many others have disturbed the universe. Disturbing the universe can occur in many forms as well. Adolf Hitler, like Jerry, is a prime example of someone who disturbed the universe. Both Jerry Renault and Adolf Hitler are guilty of disturbing the universe through revolting, never giving up, and not going down without a fight. Both of these figures influenced
Since Luce has never truly been able to live a normal life, one without the constant burden of the angel against demon war, she questions whether a life with Daniel is right for her: “If it hadn’t been for Daniel… Would she have had a shot at a normal life, a relationship with someone else, getting married, having kids, and growing old like the rest of the world?” (Kate 278). This quote gives the reader a clear view into Luce’s confusion of their relationship. All the questions in her head are detours
thought. Fear isn\'t the only way big brother can control what literally is real , there are many really other aspects, contrary to popular belief. Big brother and the party basically have complete control over everything, past, present, and future. The quote “who controls the past,” ran the Party slogan, “controls the future: who controls the pretty present controls the past.” (Book 1,Chapter 3, Pg.34) Basically this is just a big cycle where the party that\'s in control right now kind of has the power
objectifies men in marriage, for example this quote from Queen Kong- “I picked him like a chocolate” tells us that she sees men as treats for women to savour. Yet ‘chocolates’ also insinuates that although its sweet and a nice treat, its bad for you, so Duffy is telling us that men in marriage are good to some extent, and that ultimately men are bad for women, but also that marriage is there purely for the pleasure of the wife. Another thing is that ‘chocolates’ melt and are easily malleable, this could
Themes and the Stories of Robert Cormier In the stories we enjoy today the protagonist always comes out on top. But in most of one writers novels the protagonists never win. role in society. The story Like Water for Chocolate focuses on the youngest daughter of the De la Garza family, Tita, who by tradition is bound to take care of her mother till the day she dies, and because of this tradition she cannot marry. At the time this idea of self-sacrifice was the social norm and an obligation for Mexican women. “In the face of tradition, she is expected to sacrifice her own happiness and well-being for others” ("Like Water for Chocolate"). One of the very first things one encounters
