Being human can mean a lot of things It’s impossible to pinpoint one thing that describes a human and separates us from being an alien. We always think of a human having just the physical aspects of the human body. So we often tend to forget what it actually means to be human. This book The Chrysalis written by John Wyndham explains what it means to be human throughout the book. The main character David finds problems with the society in his home town Waknuk and decides that he wants to run away with his sister Petra and his cousin Rosalind all three of them can mind talk. after a while Petra starts to communicate with a girl in her head from this far away place called Sea-Land. “The Norm Is The Will Of God and The Devil Is The Father Of Deviation” These painting on the walls are trying to explain what it means to be human according to the bible by saying that the norm is from god and deviation is from the devil. Clearly a human doesn't have to have all the physical traits to be a human. But being a human isn't always what's on the outside it can include deviations in the brain. John Wyndham explains this using the point of view of David who can talk through his mind. “You hear words in your head? -Well not hear or see exactly it's more like shapes” Wyndham explains that David can see shapes in his head and make words out of them so he can mind talk with Rosalind and others. Uncle Axle explains that David, Rosalind and the others might be closer to the norm then other people in the town of Waknuk because the norm 100 years ago was perhaps that everyone had the ability to mind talk.
