POLICE BRUTALITY
Has the civil rights of American citizens been forgotten? Even though some people believe that the criminal justice system was made for the protection of citizens and are protecting our rights. The criminal justice system needs to be reformed due to the abuse of civil rights because of the death of innocent citizens, effects on the lives of children, and the misconducted investigations set those officers who committed the crime free.
The criminal justice system needs to be reformed, because too many unarmed citizens are losing their life to law enforcements and those responsible are not being prosecuted properly. Cincinnati police beat black man to death, “ An unarmed black man was fatally beaten by six police officers

She was taken to the Waller County Jail; three days later, she was found in her cell dead from what officials called suicide. Both the FBI and the Texas Rangers launched investigations trying to find out what happened. The trooper asks, “You mind putting out your cigarette please?” And Ms. Bland says, “Well, I’m in my car – why do I have to put out my cigarette?” The next part: “Step out of the car.” Ms. Bland says, “You do not have the right.” He interrupts – “I do have the right, step out of the car or I will remove you.” Does he have the right, first, to order her to step out of the car, and second, to actually physically remove her from the car? Ms. Bland says, “I refuse to talk to you other than to identify myself.” “I’m gonna yank you out of here,” is what the trooper says next. Not only is the officer disrespecting the rights of citizen but he is also threatening her and trying to remove here out of her own vehicle without a probable cause”,(Fanning).Officers need to learn to recognize the influence of socially sanctioned hatred, “Every year, thousands of people in the OSCE area are victims of violent manifestations of intolerance. Individuals are threatened, insulted and attacked because of their perceived affiliation with a group that shares a particular characteristic, such as “race”, language, religion or any other similar aspect. Cemeteries, religious buildings and memorials are desecrated because they are identified with one or more of
In the past years we have seen many riots and debates over the racism and inequalities in our criminal justice system. We have heard story after story, and watched video after video of police brutality and racism in America. We saw the unfair outcome of the Zimmerman and Treyvon Martin case. When George Zimmerman followed Treyvon Martin, a seventeen year old African American boy who was walking around the neighborhood, just because he looked suspicious to him. Even after notifying the police, Zimmerman followed Martin and ended up shooting him, after Zimmerman had hung up with the dispatcher who told him they did not need him
Our Founding Founders established the federal government with three distinct branches, each with powers over the other in order to have a proper checks and balances to ensure fairness across the board. The U.S. Constitution outlines the powers and responsibilities of the three branches of government and is a critical document for the federal government. Important laws and documents such as The Bill of Rights, The US Civil Rights Act and The Freedom of Information Act (FoIA) are managed by our Constitution. Below we will discuss three subjects which set up a diverse broad range of viewpoints that are essential in our democracy.
1. 2 Define Civil Liberties; then define Civil Rights. How are they similar? How do they differ? Which civil sequence has more influence on your life as you know it to be now? Why do you believe this to be so?
Criminal justice has garnered massive national attention in the past few years in America. Multiple police shootings, the Black Lives Matter movement, and other hot-button issues have occupied the media on a daily basis. This attention has led many Americans to question the integrity and efficacy of the government institution that was designed to uphold the law and seek justice for its people. However, this system is severely damaged and its definition of justice has been perverted and contorted beyond recognition, resulting in unfair and discriminatory treatment of the people it has been sworn to protect.
Is privacy implied in any of our Constitutional amendments? Where? First, Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Fourteenth Amendment
In recent years’ police departments around the country have been brought into the public eye. Due to their actions towards African Americans many have become suspicious about the criminal justice system and the amount of trust that can be bestow upon them. The public has only focused on police but fail to realize that this goes deeper into the system itself. There have been many court cases where African Americans have received harsher punishments than Whites for very similar crimes. This shows that it may not only be one part of the system that are treating African Americans badly. There are multiple areas that misuse their power against them and this didn’t just start to occur recently this had been occurring for years.
America is a home for people to be free from religious persecution; or at least that is what the nation was found on. As time goes on, it seem as if the foundation of religious freedom that the United States of America was found has been forgotten. The United States government at its earliest establishment had set forth a set of freedoms for all people to feel safe from any persecution. In order to make these a set of established rights, the founding fathers created the U.S. Constitution that holds within itself the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights was a call for greater constitutional protection for each citizens, or immigrants, individual civil liberties. During the twentieth century, The United States Supreme Court had a very
Inefficient policing resulting from the high tensions between law enforcement and minority races has called the issue of racial profiling and corruption within the American justice system to national attention. Many citizens now demand an end to the improper treatment and wrongful deaths of people of color on the basis that all races should be treated equally by law enforcement officials.
There is a very evident problem with racism in the United States Criminal Justice System. Society chooses to ignore this problem because many do not think they are a part of it. What they do not understand is they are a part of society, therefore a part of the problem. Even if a particular person is not doing anything to cause this problem directly, they are not helping the situation either. Society has to become aware of this issue and stop pretending as though it is something that will go away on its own. Others need to become aware of this issue so they can not only make others aware, but so they can find out the exact source of the problem and how to fix it before it is too late. The United States is supposed to be a free country where people feel safe, yet there are issues still happening today that people like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and others fought and risked their lives to change. Society likes to look back on history and say that things are different and the country has come so far and that everyone is equal. However, today’s news and statistics show that is not the case at all. If we do not take action now, we will be right back where we started. Many races are not treated fairly by citizens of this county and even the United States Criminal Justice System, especially African Americans. Nationwide, African Americans are stopped, searched, arrested, and incarcerated at rates much higher than people of other races.
Legal historian Geoffrey Stones claims that the government of the United States has in the past overreacted in times of war and crisis, and has seriously violated many civil liberties. A democracy requires high levels of civil rights, liberties, and political openness in order for its citizens to fully participate in political election, and other governmental activities; however, the demands of national security usually require much less openness, secrecy, and limitations on civil rights and liberties. Throughout history there have been times were large numbers of individuals have experienced political discrimination and have had great difficulty exercising their civil liberties. Ethnic minority groups, and immigrants have been among the most targeted by the government in times of crisis. Under conditions of war, American civil liberties and political participation are usually curtailed and violated in many ways by the government, usually with the active support of some groups and people in society. Times of national security threat are often accompanied by what historian Richard Hofstadter calls “the paranoid style in American politics.” In other words, war produces preoccupation with internal threats to national security, and some groups with in society are targeted as security ricks because of their ethnic or political belief. This paper will briefly explore different times and crisis were civil liberties have been obstructed by the government for national security
Civil Liberties is defined as “the freedom of a citizen to exercise customary rights, as of speech or assembly, without unwarranted or arbitrary interference by the government” (Merriam-Webster) but as time went by, people began to question whether or not civilians civil liberties have been compromised by the government. From Martin Luther King to Children in Long Island being taken, America’s civil liberties . The times may have changed but the people’s civil rights have to but not all have been resolved from Black Lives Matter, Women’s Rights, and the Crisis of Wars and these are the problems we must come to face.
For centuries African Americans have been treated differently because of the color of their skin. They’ve been slaves, segregated, and discriminated, and been forced to fight for equality. Till this day African Americans are discriminated but yet have accomplished a lot from changing laws to changing the way they are viewed.
In chapter 8, we learned about Civil Liberties and the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights was originally made due to the fact some felt that the constitution wasn’t doing enough to protect the citizen’s basic rights. From there the Bill of Rights was formed in order to restrict the power of government in relation to our rights. It is to protect the citizens from the government by restricting its power in certain aspects.
Civil liberties are essential to the American people. The Civil liberties of the Constitution refers to The Bill of Rights. And the Bill of Rights, guarantee all Americans basic freedom rights that has been interpreted and made clear through the judicial system over many years. All Americans civil liberties are protected in the Bill Of Rights and under no uncertainty can those rights be revoke at any time. The United States Constitution is a crucial document that tells the people what the federal government can do. For this reason, the Bill of Rights, which are the first ten amendments signed into the Constitution on December 15, 1791 ( along with the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments which became part of the guaranteed rights after the
Police brutality is something that needs to be fixed because certain race will be targeted. The African Americans especially and the hispanics are targeted the most in the America. The jail populations are mostly made up of blacks and hispanics.
