In light of the 2016 election, there have been some question as to weather or not conversion therapy is a suitable and ethical practice. Conversion therapy, also known as reparative therapy or ex-gay therapy, is used to try and change a persons sexual orientation and/or a persons gender identity. United states President Donald J. Trump has not yet said anything about his views on the matter, however, Vice-President elect Mike Pence has ‘advocated diverting taxpayer dollars to so-called conversion therapy’ and stated, during one of the republican debates, "Congress should support the reauthorization of the Ryan White Care Act only after completion of an audit to ensure that federal dollars were no longer being given to organizations that celebrate and encourage the types of behaviors that facilitate the spreading of the HIV virus. Resources should be directed toward those institutions which provide assistance to those seeking to change their sexual behavior.” (Chris Nichols- Politifact) He also supported reparative therapy when he started to run for congress in 2000. Conversion therapy, unlike many other therapies, can be extremely harmful to a person, especially a minor’s, mental health and self esteem; Therefor, conversion therapy should be illegal in all 50 states because it puts lgbtq+ youth at a greater risk of experiencing high levels of depression and suicide, is often biased to fit one set of religious beliefs and is ‘unethical’. Conversion therapy, or reparative
because of their status and geopolitical location in comparison to Europe and other western developed countries in light of recent refugee crises. Immigration policy within North America is almost entirely reflective of people’s will, with the luxury of sharing only a single border with a developing nation it does not hold victim to the constant flux of people like Europe does after any economic or political downturn. Both of these nations are known for their lax attitudes towards mental health care, mixed opinions on homosexuality, and complex healthcare systems. Within these contexts, especially vulnerable populations such as LGBT refugees can become indicators for the oppressive force of the law and be buried by it. That is why for this analysis a uniquely health policy approach is necessary, to resolve the high mental health burden on LGBT asylum-seekers in North America the relevant laws and policies must be known; analyzed, and amended. To achieve this we will discuss current legal framework around asylum and specifically LGBT asylum; the issues that stem from the current asylum process; interventions and actors within this subfield; and policy and research recommendations for the
The mental health of individuals in the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered) community is something that is a serious problem. For most of the history of the United States and many different parts of the world LGBT people faced much persecution and in some cases even death. This constant fear of discovery and the pressure that one feels on oneself when “in the closet” can lead to major mental distress. Research has shown that people who identify as LGBT are twice as likely to develop lifetime mood and anxiety disorders (Bostwick 468). This is extremely noticeable the past couple years in the suicides of bullied teens on the basis of sexual identity and expression. The stigma on simply being perceived as LGBT is strong enough to
Conversion therapy, also known as reparative therapy, or Sexual Orientation Change Efforts (SOCE) has a troubled history within the United States and abroad. Conversion therapy is the use of a variety of means to attempt to change an individual’s sexual or gender orientation. Current practices include inducing vomiting or paralysis while showing a subject homoerotic images, having a subject snap a rubber band on their wrist whenever they have certain thoughts, or using tactics to create shame or aversion to same sex or transgender thoughts. Many established institutes claim that the therapy does or doesn't work and offer contradicting evidence for their position. The Movement Advancement Project, a group dedicated to providing research for the advancement of LGBT people, states in an infographic that nine states, plus the District of Columbia and a handful of municipalities have banned conversion therapy from being provided by licensed medical professionals to minors (“Kids” 1). Based on the established evidence and the overwhelming number of psychologists and sociologist that disavow conversion therapy, along with the multitude of horror stories from children who were persuaded, or forced, to participate by their parents, the federal government should ban conversion therapy for all minors.
This is in direct correlation with the increased probability of mental illnesses in the transgender population. Traditional views certainly do not help as many transgender citizens are told they are “sick” because of their difference with many religious and personal beliefs. A study from Boston published earlier this year in the Journal of Adolescent Health, reported that transsexual youth had two to three times increased risk of psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety disorder, suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, self-harm without lethal intent, and both inpatient and outpatient mental health treatment. These statistics show the clear consequences of mental health transgenders are facing if transgender rights continues to be unregulated. It is essential that the federal government steps in to take action in order to make sure things do not continue on this downwards path.
Homophobia has been an uprising issue since the 80s, and it needs to be stopped before it gets more out of hand. Homophobia has been the motive behind various crimes; in just the US alone. One of the various crimes was the Pulse Club shooting in Orlando.(Attaiah) wrote after an interview with the shooter's father, “Mateenn(shooter) had seen two men kissing and was instantly enraged by what he saw.” The fact that someone's sexual preference is the cause of a mass shooting shows how homophobia is a major problem here in the US. Another issue with homophobia is that it is driving a vast amount of teens to suicide. Suicide rates have increased drastically for members of the LGBTQ community. (WONG) “Suicide rates amongst gay youths are devastating. With suicide becoming a far too common way “out” of unbearable homophobic condition.” Not only suicide in general, but there has been a trend of gay youths killing themselves because it is the only way “out”. Fortunately, a man by the name of Dan Savage is trying to help with that. He has created a project by the name of “It gets better project” which is for gay, lesbian, or Transgenders to have a “safe place”.
The death of Lela Alcorn was an event that dramatically changed our views on sexuality. Shortly after Leelah died, a petition was started known as Lela’s law which would ban conversion therapy in the United States. The petition gathered 100,000 signatures in which case required a response from white house officials. In April 2015, President Obama responded to the petition stated that he supported the law and was working to get the law enacted. To give more overview on Lela’s suicide, Lela Alcorn was a 17-year-old transsexual female who jumped out in front of a trunk. In her suicide note Lela stated “I feel like a girl trapped in a boy 's body, and I 've felt that way ever since I was 4.” (Lela Alcorn Suicide note page 1). When Lela was 14, Lela told her parents that she was transgender, however Lela’s parents were not accepting of this decision, stating that God doesn’t make mistakes and that she was in fact a boy and sent her to conversion therapy. The conversion therapy only made Lela feel worse about herself and took her own life.
The study that provides evidence that conversion therapy is both ineffective and harmful is provided by the American Psychological Association (APA) in a report entitled, Appropriate Therapeutic Responses to Sexual Orientation. The report concluded that, "efforts to change sexual
My second argument is that president trump is eliminating any progress that has been made in the past few years. It is said that trump is using his new religious freedom executive order to cover up his rulings against Obama's 2014 LGBTQ rights protection. He is using his new power to attack our rights as humans. If this were to become a law it would could endanger LGBTQ people and their families.
The members of the LGBT community have struggled a very long time through many obstacles and a lot of hatred in attempt to be accepted by the people of their community. Recently, America passed a law that made gay marriage legal, making progress on the community’s fight to abolish homophobia. Unfortunately, what many people don’t know, homosexuality still very, very illegal in 76 countries, punishments being imprisonment or worse. All around the world, 47.9% of LGBT males and 72.9% of LGBT females think about committing suicide, 29% of LGBT males and 52.4% of LGBT females attempt suicide, and 1 out of every 25 LGBT males and 2 out of every 25 of LGBT females who attempt at suicide succeed at it. Even though both Equiano’s and Wilson’s battles are over, this battle seems like it is just
How America should react to homosexuals Many experts agree that homosexuality has existed as long as human beings themselves, although the attitude towards them has undergone dramatic changes in some countries. Accepted by many societies during Greek and Roman era, most of the time homosexuals were considered to be sinners against nature and even criminals. In Medieval and modern periods homosexuals were prosecuted. Enlightenment brought some liberation, substituting death penalty by imprisonment. In Nazi Germany so-called "doctors" tried to "cure" gays by the ways of castration and extreme intimidation. Until 1973 attempts to find a cure against homosexuality, what by majority was viewed as a disease, were
Conversion disorder is a condition in which a patient shows symptoms of brain or nervous system problems, such as a stroke or seizure. However, no such problems can be found to explain the symptoms. This condition is also known as functional neurological symptom disorder. For people with conversion disorder, the symptoms may result in:
How can we know if a person falsely faked an injury or that they are suffering from a psychological condition? Managers or supervisors at job sites would find it extremely difficult to accuse a person of either one. The term for falsely or purposefully faking an injury is called malingering. The term for a neurological disorder that causes blindness, numbness, paralysis, or any other neurologic symptoms is called conversion disorder. These two terms can easily be mistaken, especially in a working environment. Conversion disorder does not have many signs of when it will occur. The disorder is usually caused by high amounts of stress, maybe from a stressful situation. It can affect a person’s mental health or a mental health condition that is
Most medical and mental health practitioners agree that efforts to change sexual orientation are ineffective and harmful. The APA stated that "no recent research (1999-2007) meets methodological standards that permit conclusions regarding efficiency or safety of conversion therapy"(...). Douglas C. Haldeman presented an odd case that presented both the ineffectiveness and also the indirect benefits of conversion therapy, where a gay man realized there was nothing he could do to change and finally accepted himself for who he was (p. 120, ). However, not all patients have the same results. There are critical health risks that have been associated with conversion therapy. Many patients have suffered from depression, anxiety, lowered self esteem, and sexual dysfunction. In extreme cases, some patients have even attempted suicide. Haldeman described another case of a man who had high hopes of being "cured" and being able to live a happy heterosexual life. After the therapy had failed him, he became depressed Aside from the therapy being harmful and ineffective, ethicists discourage conversion therapy on the basis that implies that there is cure for a
Many researchers sympathetic to conversion therapy do not actually assess changes in sexual orientation or arousal patterns, but in behavior, which is not a true gauge of sexual orientation. Psychotherapeutic and religious conversion therapies, show no evidence indicating that such treatments are effective in their intended purpose and empirical data on the potentially harmful effects of such treatments is established instead. The debate over orientation versus choice of sexual behavior will no doubt continue. In its report, the American Psychological Association task force concludes that “these debates can only be resolved through an evidence-based appraisal of the potential benefits and harm of sexual orientation change efforts.” Thus far,
Monday was the second time in three years that the U.S. Supreme court rejected a challenge to the 2012 legislation putting a ban on gay conversion therapy in California. The said law prohibits mental health counselors, psychologists, and social workers licensed in the state from offering the said therapy to alter minors’ sexual orientation, Reuters details.
