He does not want to sign his name away to be remembered for this act because it’s not an act of charity or anyone else but to make himself feel right and just in his eyes and if he signs his name alway it will be remembered and his name in the books forever. Another point in the story is during the story Reverend Hale who himself is “ a man of god” starters
Guilt is the first main theme in the crucible. “I speak my own sins; I cannot judge another. I have no tongue for it. (John Proctor). People’s true character is revealed through their actions. Their morals and ethics can be told from how they choose to act in a situation. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible; the character of John Proctor is an honorable man despite having committed wrongful acts. He was able to redeem himself through acts that is considered courageous, such as when he refuses to contribute to the lie of witchcraft in Salem, when he fights for the people who were convicted of witchcraft and when he regrets being a dishonest man.
John Proctor symbolizes a crucible because of the test he goes through that reveals his true character. In the middle of the story, Elizabeth is taken away because Abigail has accused her, and she is going to jail to most likely die. Proctor cannot accept this and says, “My wife will never die for me! I will bring your guts into your mouth but that goodness will not die for me” (1181) because he knows the only reason she was accused was to get back at John. Proctor knows what he has done and now his wife is going to face the consequences of it and we see his true character and strength here when he promises that he will stand up and fight for Elizabeth and will do whatever it takes to own up to his mistakes and make them right. Later in the story, Proctor is stuck in a hard place and can confess to the crime of lechery and take the punishment as it is given, or back down and let the blame fall on Elizebeth. After a long time of struggling to accept what he did, he finally lets go and confesses that he has committed lechery. This confession strengthens his character because he has done the right thing and has finally been freed of the burden
The play The Crucible by Arthur Miller has one character that is true to himself and stands out above all the rest. Throughout the play, John Proctor shows some ideal qualities that are not found in the other characters. Proctor is a man of integrity because he shows honesty, he stands by his beliefs, and he makes sacrifices.
Integrity is having a standard of morals and ethics, and living by them. It is a willingness and ability to do the right thing even when it is hard. The story To Kill a Mockingbird is filled with integrity. For example, many of the people in Maycomb share a prejudiced sense of integrity when it comes to its racist views. However, it is Atticus Finch’s integrity throughout the novel that really embodies the idea of moral and ethical principles. He puts into action every moral idea that he supports. Atticus is a role model to not only his children, but to the whole town of Maycomb, and his integrity is a great part of what makes him such a good example. Integrity
In the play The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, the character John Proctor will not lie and confess to something he did not do. Thus, he is hanged for his principles. Proctor has two main principles he felt were more important to respect and uphold than his own life. The most obvious one was his reputation. In theocratic Salem, where private and public ethics are regarded equally, one’s reputation plays an important role. In such an environment where reputation is regarded so highly many are afraid of guilt by association. Various characters base their actions on the desire to protect their own reputations, in order to keep them in the best light possible. Towards the beginning of the play, John Proctor sought to keep his good name
Calvin Coolidge once said “No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave”. Unfortunately, all some people do is hurt and take away from others instead of give. These people are not capable of caring and respecting other people. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, John Proctor is sadly one of those kinds of people who does not hold honor because of the way he treats people around him.
In the beginning of the play, “The Crucible”, John Proctor is viewed in the town as an honest and trustworthy person. He was actually a hypocrite. He always portrayed himself as a man of God, but his actions did not always live up to his reputation. John Proctor's wife is accused of witchcraft by Abigail WIlliams and is going to die. John Proctor wants to save his wife, but the only way to save her is to ruin his name which he takes pride in. He had a secret which was eating at him. His secret ends up being what kills him, but it also sets him free.
The Crucible is a heart wrenching play that bring you back to the time of the salem witch trials. When reading you get a taste of the puritan lifestyle through many different people and personalities. Many themes jump out to you such as greed, self-preservation, power, but what really caught my attention was the integrity. The integrity shown by John Proctor was displayed at many different occasions through this play. John shows very strong personal integrity through his honesty with his wife about the adultery.
Reputation is very important to the characters in the theocratic town of Salem in The Crucible. John Proctor mentions that he cannot “live without a name” (143). His life is meaningless if he does not have a good reputation. For many characters in the play, including Abigail Williams, Elizabeth Proctor, and John Proctor, tries to protect their reputation.
With both David Merrell and John Proctor, their true integrity came out when trouble was brought into their different lives. John Proctor shows his integrity by being honest. This play presents a number of conflicts, external and internal. The crisis faced by John Proctor in the final two acts of the play embody both of the external and the internal conflicts of the story as he is forced to confess to a moral transgression then accused of another. In The Crucible, John Proctor states, “Because it is my name! Because I can not have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name” (Miller 143). In other words, he does not want to be seen as a sinner due to already being a sinner in the past by cheating on his wife. So he refuses to lie to same himself in order to keep his name clean. This shows that he is willing to give up his life in order to stay true to himself and his values. In Guilty by Suspicion, the protagonist David Merrell shows his integrity by standing up to the House Committee. This shows his pride and that he is proud of who he is and he isn’t going to let these people change that. David exclaims to the committee “I was raised to stand up for what i believe in and i’m going to raise my son in the same

In the crucible, Proctor surrendered himself to the court. He did this because of his love for his wife. His wife was going to be sentenced to hang but instead proctor to her place by saying he worshipped the devil. That really makes you think about his morals and values. He died for something he didn’t even do just to save his wife. In the story, for the most part, proctor and Elizabeth are fighting and yelling at each other because Elizabeth was worried proctor was cheating on her with abigail. so the reader would think that proctor didn’t love his wife anymore. proctor confessed about his sin of adultery because he felt really guilty for what he did even though his name would be ruined in the village forever. In “The Crucible” Arthur Miller used the character John Proctor to emphasize the importance of honesty. Honesty is a big part of the character John Proctor. Though he had an affair with Abigail, he was very guilty about it. Next, John admitted to the court that he had an affair with Abigail. He admitted this because Abigail was accusing his wife Elizabeth Proctor of being a witch. Abigail was doing this so she could get rid of Elizabeth and be with John. In the end John refuses to sign the paper that states he is confessing to being a witch. After signing the paper he realizes that the paper will be hung on the church door and his good name will be tarnished. So, John takes the paper and rips it up in front of the judges of the court.
Although John Proctor has shown his side of being acute he is also an individualistic person in the play The Crucible. Self-reliance is shown throughout the play as he demonstrates this quality. Miller makes many connections to this characteristic when we first get a description of John Proctor. Miller described him as being, “not easily led” (1). His beliefs stuck with him throughout the trials but at some points disrespected others and treated them harshly. This trait of him being egotistic led him to lie to his wife and keep secrets from the trials. He was then later questioned by authorities and still kept his mindset of a determined man. He protects his name when he is about to be hung. John Proctor towards the end of the act demonstrates
