The card at the crime scene is part of the evidence in the case because it was used to taunt the cops. Another part of the evidence is the bullets in the bodies of the victims. They can be used in the case to match the gun to the killing and to see if it was from the same gun and the angle that it came from. Also, the van that they were driving is a part of the evidence. The rifle that was used in the case was a Bushmaster XM-15 rifle. Which was found at the
This paper will try to explore two theories of the beltway sniper. The first is the conflict theory and the second is the psychological theory. There will be summarizing of the crime (dates, offenders, how they were caught if they were). The two theories will try to explore the crime. Each of the theory will shed light on the reasons for the crime. For this paper, I will provide evidence to which theory seems to be stronger. I will also show any evidence that will lead to the deviant path that was taken. I will be explaining how you determine the path that was taken for the crime. I hope that after reading this the audience will have a better understanding of the conflict and psychological theory of the beltway DC sniper.
The Sniper, written by Liam O’Flaherty, is a story about a Republican sniper in the Irish civil war in 1922. This story tells of a night spent on a roof looking for the enemy, the Free-Staters. In this short description of the nights events, the sniper kills 3 people; a soldier, an informer, and finally an enemy sniper on the roof across the road from him. In the end this enemy sniper turns out to be the republicans brother. This story shows the the specific characteristics a sniper must have to carry out their duty. A key moment in this text which influenced the sniper is the Civil war itself.
The United States contains 5% of the world’s population. However, our nation covers 35-50% of the world’s civilian-owned guns, is ranked first for firearms per capita, and holds the highest homicide rate among all other nations of wealth and democracy at 88.5% (Masters). Such high rates and loose restrictions are bound to lead to tragedy. We will not sit here and make excuses, we will not allow power in the hands of insanity, and we will not allow the safety of our children to be hindered. After each tragedy that has struck, we have failed to successfully improve gun control. As of now, we hold no federal law banning semi-automatic assault weapons, just like the weapons used in the Las Vegas massacre, resulting in
Taya Kyle, the author of the article “American Sniper Widow: Gun Control Won’t Protect Us”, believes that there are two sides of the argument on gun control. People can use statistics, facts, and real life examples to argue that there should be stricter control of guns in the US, but they cannot eliminate the emotional side of the story. While in the last two decades, violent crime rates have actually been reduced in the US, fears have gone up. Anyone can be a victim of a violent crime because if another person decides to do harm, they will do it under any circumstances.
Adversity is when people have to overcome a problem even though it might be hard for them to do. Overcoming a problem can make people stressed out or nervous that they are doing something wrong. Liam O’Flaherty made The Sniper from “The Sniper” face many hard times throughout the story. While The Sniper was protecting himself from danger, Richard Connell made Rainsford from “The Most Dangerous Game” run from his own game. The Sniper faced adversity by being in the military and making the decision to kill people who were after him. Rainsford faced a problem when a psycho man would not let him leave the island until he made it 3 days without getting hunted. People need to
In the 21st century, raging riots are common in the United States of America. In fact, the diversity of opinions often leads to dissension and discord, and with these unstable circumstances, crimes of passion can occur quite frequently. Specifically, terrorists, murderers, bombers, and other mentally incompetent people remain discreet predators among the innocent. However, many would argue that guns, especially the rise of automatic weapons, have only led to the increase of such violence. Concisely, guns, whether hand guns, rifles, or shotguns, have led to a multitude of problems for both those that wield them and those that fear them because of the dangerous situations that can result.
It appears as though the repetitive and unfortunate tragedies of mass shootings have become incorporated into the everyday life of American culture. We are forced to live in a heightened degree of fear, skepticism, and hesitation concerning our public safety. This phenomenon could reasonably occur in response to the vast ineffectiveness of the country’s current gun laws. Time after time similar misfortunes arise, yet few major changes are implemented to prevent them from reoccurring in the future. We cannot let this trend continue any further. Though some claim that increased gun control is useless and infringes upon the Second Amendment, it limits civilians’ weapons grade, obstructs those deemed unfit to wield such lethal weapons, and insures a greater level of security, thus it should be executed.
Gun violence is the sign of a far greater universal problem in America today. Violence and gun violence specifically, is surrounded within, and spread all through every part of our society. All the reasons remain intimately related to the actual solution, which can only be a general solution one by treating it as one issue. The region that I live in is considered a peaceful part of Harvest, which I am particularly grateful about. I do not have to worry about gunfights in the roads of my community, nor maybe being helpless confronted by students with a gun at school. That, nevertheless, does not mean that my community is impermeable to gun violence. Huntsville has seen its share of gun violence from the incident at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), where three people were murdered and three others injured on February 12, 2010. Throughout the course of a routine gathering of the biology department attended by about 12 people, professor Amy Bishop stood up and began shooting those next to her with a 9-millimeter handgun (Hall 2010)
The gun violence, crimes, and cases in the United States is a national epidemic. A lot of people take advantage of guns using them and manipulating their weapon with hardly any thought. Many countless innocent lives have been lost because of the fact that people have been able to obtain firearms legally or illegally. These people have taken the notion to be the jury, judge, and executioner in holding someone’s life in their hands. For example, in the article Think Progress the state, “Courts have granted immunity to a man who went back to his car to get a gun, and another who shot a acquaintance for threatening to beat him up.”(Think Progress). Think Progress also states, “In Florida alone, 26 children and teens were killed in Stand Your Ground cases.”(Think Progress). These are very serious cases where people have misused their rights by manipulating the Stand Your Ground Law and their weapon. Gun violence just do not affect the victims, but it also affects poor neighborhoods, family and friends. The Atlantic report confirms great logos with providing statistical facts stating, “There are about 310 million guns in the country. About 40% of households have them.” Guns are so easy to obtain legally and illegally that America has the highest gun rate than any other country in the
Over the last decade or so, the United States of America has been shaken by an epidemic of terrifying mass shootings, devastating slayings of unexpecting victims, and unnerving annihilations of the innocent. There is no specific target, no explicitly sought-out group, nor definite individual. From a classroom of first-graders, to a crowded movie theatre, to a U.S. Naval yard, the location seems at most, random, other than that it is almost always a public place. The perpetrators responsible for these horrific murders also vary, and often surprise those who thought they knew them. However, while the occurrences of mass shootings are unpredictable and always shocking, most have one thing in
On August 26, the great country of the United States witnessed yet another tragic event unfold on live television and all over social media. Two news reporters, Alison Parker and Adam Ward, were shot and killed by a former colleague, Vester L. Flanagan II, out of haste and anger at the news show for removing him from his duties as a reporter. The victims were found with multiple gun wounds to the torso and head. To help prevent any more tragic events such as this one, we as Americans need to find a way to make a change in how easy it is to purchase a deadly weapon that can be used to inflict some serious damage to another human. We should have a system that restrictions on what weapons you can buy, by getting a background check on the person for any criminal records or any grudges that they
The Orlando nightclub shooting in Florida on June 12, 2016 was the single largest massacre in U.S history, taking the lives of 50 individuals, including the shooter himself, and injuring 53 others. This is one extreme example of the gun violence that has been occurring in this country, but mass shootings like this and the one at Newton in 2012 are only a small part of our gun violence issue. The everyday gun violence that takes place in cities all across the United States claims the lives of thousands every single year. According to The Guardian, 33,500 civilians die each year because of gun brutality- “that’s about 1 life every 15 minutes” (Beckett). Between the years of 1999 and 2013, there were 464,003 gun deaths in the U.S, about 58% of them were suicides 37% were homicides. (ProCon.org) Gun violence and the consequences of that violence, have become a real and dangerous problem in the U.S , why else would the CDC list the United States as having the highest rate of gun violence out of all developed countries today? (Gale Opposing Viewpoints) This issue is not just attributable to a single factor, there are several that play an important part in why gun violence is such an issue in the U.S, namely laws and poverty; and in these causes we can also find solutions.
One of the most horrific shootings that scared America was the Columbine High School shooting of 1999. Though not the first mass shooting, this shooting was the first major school shooting with the death of 12 students, 1 teacher, and 21 injured. The two shooters were Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris. Both of the killers were white, male, and 18. They had both parents, were both a part of an
Several minutes after the shooting, a local police officer discovered a Remington 30-06 rifle along with a wealth of physical evidence, as follows: an overnight bag containing assorted toiletries, two unopened cans of beer, a portable radio with the number “00416” scratched on its side, (later discovered to be James Earl Ray’s inmate number while a prisoner at Missouri State Penitentiary), a pair of pliers with “Romage Hardware” stamped on the handle, a Memphis newspaper dated April 4, 1968, a brown paper bag on which “Homestead” was printed and men’s underwear. Also found was a cardboard box that contained Bushnell binoculars and a paper bag and receipt from York Arms Company dated April 4, 1968, along with cartridge and some ammunition.
Being a student in the United States, I have often heard many stories about gun violence. I always thought it was something that would never happen to me and people around me until that Friday night. I clearly remember that it was a chill and windy night. A dark sky was full of the blazing stars, and a round bright moon hanging in the sky. Everything just seemed so quiet and perfect. During the time, I was sleeping peacefully in bed, and all of a sudden I heard someone
