Their goal was to find spices such as pepper, ginger, cloves, cinnamon as well as precious metals such as gold. With this in mind finding a new route to India became his number one goal. Although there were millions of Native Americans who were living in the New World, Columbus is the man who is getting all of the credit for finding the New World. Columbus was an Italian that was sent by the Queen and King of Spain to find riches in other lands, and during this voyage he stumbled onto the Americas. During his time in the Americas he enslaved the Native Americans, forced Christianity onto them and brought over diseases that would result in the eventual deaths of Native American. For a long period of time though, Columbus was known as the “man who discovered America”, nothing more. Now he is thought of as a murderer and a thief for stealing the land and lives of many Native Americans.

My own thinking about Columbus was that he did not discover America but did eventually land on America. I also believed that Columbus tried to gain control of the Indians but he met some resistance.

Many people in this world don’t have the correct knowledge of what has happened in the past. There has been a lot of misconceptions that people have about North America. A common misconception that has spread throughout the world is that Christopher Columbus discovered America. That statement is more than 100% false. Christopher Columbus never set a foot in North America. He landed in the Caribbean islands and and explored the Central and South American coasts. He didn’t reach North America, which was already discovered by the Native Americans.

Christopher Columbus is acknowledged for discovering the Americas, but he is also recognized for his actions towards the indigenous people. As a result of these actions, Columbus has been criticized by many. It’s no doubt that these disapprovals and judgments are valid, however, Columbus did have reasonings behind his motivations. Columbus decided that he should start converting Indians to Christianity on his third voyage. He also had his authority of governing taken away by the crown. So when he went to the colony the new governor arrest him and sent him back to Spain. Columbus had a fourth voyage. He was assigned the task of finding a sea route to Asia. He believed that with his new knowledge of the Indies, he could find the Asian continent. Columbus failed once again. All of Columbus’ documents show us that he failed at his tasks but brought Europeans to the Americas.

Christopher Columbus set sail in 1492 on a mission to find an all water route to the western Indies, instead Columbus reached North America where he continued his search for gold and trade.
