The Death Of Pride: Can Pride Kill Someone?

What is the definition of pride? If someone were to search the definition they would find that pride is “a feeling or deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired.” People can experience pride from many things like success, or intelligence, and even simple petty things being the first to turn in their test in a class. In the story the character Brother has a different type of pride, instead of being prideful of his actions his pride is a character trait. Brother is prideful of himself and having his crippled brother Doodle damaged his pride which is a dangerous thing when pride is a trait instead of a feeling. People often forget about how important a family member, especially siblings, are because they haven’t matured enough to understand the complexity and importance of life and family. In James Hurst’s short story “The Scarlet Ibis” brotherhood is a very big topic throughout it and the character “Brother” demonstrates how complicated and strange being prideful, being a sibling, and being a person, is. Through the story he is characterized as considerate and hurtful through his actions and inner thoughts.

Pride is a boomerang that will eventually come back to hit you. Webster Dictionary’s definition of pride is, “a feeling or deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements.” In this story, I will talk about one boy’s pride that comes from the achievements of his brother rather than his own. Rather than celebrating the glory of his brother’s achievements, he lets the pride get to him. This makes him act narcissistic. In “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, the narrator lets his pride and ambition ultimately destroy his brother.

In the the story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James, Hurst shows his audience that self pride is a positive aspect in this story, it can help people get through difficult obstacles they have in life, but when people worry too much about their self pride it can lead to hurting others physically and mentally.

John C. Maxwell once said “Leaders who fail to prune their pride will meet demise. That's not a guess, it's a guarantee. With pride, it's not a matter of 'if' we will fall, but 'when.' There are no exceptions.” This quote Maxwell says shows how influential pride is and how it can/will lead to someone’s downfall.

Is it possible to kill a family member with pride? In "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst, that is exactly what happened. Brother always wanted a brother, but his new brother Doodle wasn't like most, he was very fragile and couldn't do things that normal boys could? Brother was determined to teach him everything he needed to know so he wouldn't be behind but eventually worked him to hard. He treated Doodle like he was a normal boy that could handle strenuous physical activity. He let his pride get in the way of going back to help Doodle not realizing that Doodle was hurting, when he finally went back it was too late. Since Brother left Doodle alone after Doodle called out for him not to leave him he is guilty of Doodle's death.

By analyzing character motivations, choices, and actions in To Kill a Mockingbird, “The Scarlet Ibis,” and “I, Too,” it is clear that pride can drive characters to make life-changing decisions with long term consequences. Pride can be a good thing at times, but never have to much of it. It could get in the way of many things. Which is what happens in Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, when Brother's pride gets in the way of excepting his little brother Doodle. Doodle was born premature and can't do the things that Brother can do. Brother doesn't like the fact that Doodle is so slow at doing things. He threatens him, makes him feel bad for the way he is, pushes him to limits that could really hurt Doodle. Have pride but not so much to where it starts effecting the people around you. Reason #1

Pride is like an iridescent object. From one angle, it can seem like a great feeling. But when viewed from a different perspective, it can be seen as a source of destruction to a relationship. He loved his little brother, but the Narrator's family has thought that Doodle would not survive the main issue of his life and not being able to do stuff. The Narrator and his family finally had seen that he could talk, and there was no sign of walking. The Narrator had to take his bother everywhere he had to go in his little go-cart. Which though the Narrator had been tired of carrying him around in the the go-cart, which, made him think that he can teach Doodle how to walk. Everyone was amused that Doodle could walk and now the Narrator for his pride of making him walk had consumed his mind and pressured Doodle to do more thinks before summer was over and start school. In the last week, before school started, in the bloody tree there was a Scarlet Ibis and fell down with no coordinated and died fragile, feathers everywhere. After that afternoon the Narrator's pride had vanished and ran home and left his brother who had fallen down.The moment that the Narrator had realized that he had pressured him and look for Doodle, he had died so similar to the Scarlet Ibis, delicate, blood all over ad with no coordination. For this reason, the Narrator is innocent and had not having nothing to do with his brother recognizing

Is pride powerful enough to come between two brothers? "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst showes that the Narrator is thinking more about his own pride and less about his brother Doodle. He didn't like the facts that he would have a brother who wasn't all there or who is different from everyone else. Even when he showes Doodle how to walk he didn't do it to help Doodle but for his own pride. The Narrators pride taking over is what killed Doodle in the end and is why the Narrator is guilty of his brothers death.

Can pride kill the people others love and cherish? In the story "' the scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst, the Brother knew that doodle should not go through strenuous work and he ignored the rule many times before Doodle died. Brother didn't teach Doodle all those things to help Doodle become more normal, he was doing them for himself. Brother didn't want to have a brother that was disabled from the things that he liked to do. After Doodle died Brother realized that he had been pushing Doodle too far for his own good.

The allegory” The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst is about a brother that killed his younger brother because of his pride.First, you should know his brother should not have pushed Doodle too hard. In my opinion, Doodle’s older brother should have let Doodle get better at his own pace not what he felt was right. Furthermore, Doodle’s older brother should just be happy that his brother is alive for the time being and not push him too hard because he will start school soon and is already having struggles in school. Therefore, I believe it teaches the lesson that too much pride is bad because it can kill someone very close to you and push them too hard too fast. Pride is a dangerous emotion that can cause ruin to all those that encounter it. In the short story written by Edgar Allan Poe, "The Cask of Amontillado," Montresor's pride is offended by Fortunato, a man he has forgiven for various offences time and time again. Montresor formulates a deadly plan to exact revenge upon Fortunato for speaking ill of him. "The Cask of Amontillado" examines pride and how it can be very dangerous when it is a guiding force behind people's decisions and other emotions (Poe 221).
