The second experiment tested college students. The results of both experiments showed that students recall information that was spaced rather than received all at once. These experiments suggest that the break students receive from recess can improve their ability to retain information learned in class. This supports my argument that recess is beneficial to students’ academic performance. The goal of the review is to “explore the role of recess in schools.” In it, researchers define recess and its modern context, and describe the variables that affect the behaviors of youth during recess. They then go on to describe the educational, cognitive, and social implications of recess, drawing conclusions from the studies referenced. The evaluation of studies in the source is useful in bringing loads of research and results together to form an argument detailing the benefits of recess. This source, a section from a larger volume collecting research on the behavior of children on playgrounds, details the role of conflict. The playground, on which recess would likely take place, is considered an “open” space, as children are able to “select their companions, their activities, and to determine the length of their interaction (p. 67). Game playing in the classroom is usually a closed setting. Researchers claim that children are better able to resolve conflicts in open setting, and that levels of aggression are lower in open settings.
First of all, recess can allow students to relax and release energy. According to “Do You Need Recess?” by Mackenzie Carros, “...’Recess is the one break in the day to relax and have fun!’...” (pg. 31) When a student is relaxing or having fun, it helps them take a little break to run or even walk around. That can help teachers with students that have a lot of energy and disrupt class because they will lose some of that energy outside having fun. That is one reason why middle schools should have recess.
On Tuesday we started a debate over if we are for recess and if we aren’t. I was on the pro side of the debate. With doing this debate we found out a lot of reasons why maybe recess isn’t such a good idea and why it is a good idea. One major reason why people support structured recess is because, “Recently, policy makers and funding organizations have called for more opportunities for daily activity as a means to address childhood obesity.” (Text 1, Lines 4-6). Structured recess lets students be able to play the same activity. This means that there will be less conflict because students often don’t agree with playing the same activity. For example, one group of students would want to play basketball while another group would want to play football. Recently, as kids get older, kids have less time to enjoy and get to play outside. It’s because of the ideas of parents or education administers who want their children to learn more and experience more at school. Teachers and parents need to realize that recess will help with problem solving and social skills. Kids also need recess in Middle School because they can stay more focused in school. Study shows that kids are more attentive and productive after in the classroom after recess. This reason highlights that kids are more focused after they have recess because they are more active. Meanwhile in Chicago recess is good news for children squirming in their seats.
