In the 1860’s there was an Era that started called the reconstruction. The main purpose for the reconstruction was to give African-American people full political and civil equality. However, it was very tough to do this, especially since most white in the south didn’t want the African-Americans to have the same rights as themselves. During this Era there were multiple good things that happened, yet, there were also many bad things that happened. For instance, during the reconstruction the 14th amendment was passed so the African-American would get equal rights, but during the Era groups such as Ku Klux Klan was created, also during this time the economic problems weren’t solved. Since the main point of the reconstruction was to make African-Americans to gain equality, the 14th amendment that was passed in 1868 was very positive. The 14th amendment was a very important time during the reconstruction, since the amendment made it illegal to treat different races unequally. However, although some people thought that the 14th amendment was going to make everything good in the society, and that the African-Americans would be treated fully equally wasn’t completely correct. For example, although the 14th amendment was passed, and made it illegal to treat different races unequally, some people still did. Nevertheless, the African-Americans did gain more rights than they had before, and were treated more equally after the 14th amendment passed. Although the 14th amendment was going
During the Reconstruction Era, African Americans got more opportunities which led to their growth. Some of these opportunities were education and many different work choices that wouldn't have happened without Reconstruction. In the history alive article it explained how after the Civil War, people built schools and colleges for black children across the south increasing their education greatly. Also, the reading ability rate of African-Americans went from 5% during slavery to more than 50% after slavery. Because of their ability to go to school, African Americans learned how to read and other educational experiences which made them have the same rights as white people providing for growth. After the Civil War, between 1865 to 1903 22,000 more black people than before owned business’. This led to success of African Americans in financial ways gaining more money. After reconstruction a lot of African-Americans started their own business leading to the success rates of African Americans going up greatly. Furthermore, 1/5 of the new office holders in the south were actually African Americans after reconstruction and they were all smart they were all smart, hard-working, focused, and ambitious. This was huge for the black community because they had never had black government politicians before. This made it so the government in the south was less white supremacy and more equality, bringing in new opinions from African American
In 1865 to 1877, a very important part of U.S. history took place, and that was Reconstruction, where every slave was freed, and the whites and black lived equally among one another. It wasn’t an easy breeze and took a long time for whites to accept blacks, and even in current day there are some problem with racism, the main focus was to get rid of slavery, and that was a success.
During reconstruction there were still racist and people set with their opinions of African American’s, however the federal government made it harder for those to express their ‘opinion’, as three amendments were created, protecting those who were previously oppressed. While there was still those who did not recognize people of colors rights, the law recognized them. Lastly during the end of Reconstruction, the government acts again in favor of people in color to protect them from the Ku Klux Klan. The K.K.K was an extremist group, killing African Americans in order to spread their message of white supremacy. Klansman used their
There were still acts in place to limit rights and a corrupt government. Some southern states set up black codes to restrict rights against the African Americans. Under these laws, no African American can own or rent a home, carry a weapon, and all must work for white (document A). These laws go around the 13th and 14th amendment of abolishing slavery and all have citizenship. White Americans believe that African Americans will bring disarray to the government. The freedoms of the African Americans were still confined during the reconstruction. African Americans are apparent to argue and be aggressive in the picture (document G). This shows that African Americans were unfit for government and were not capable to be a part of it. Restricting the
Although the purpose of Reconstruction was to help the country back on track and assist in getting rights for black Americans, it ended with the country in turmoil and all the rights given, stripped away again. The Civil War ended and there was much promise for freedom and equality. These hopes were dashed by the new laws restricting these black Americans from living how they please. The rights were given and taken, not given back for years. The voting laws passed in the south took away a constitutional right from citizens of America. The Jim Crow Laws segregated an entire society over the shade of the skin.
In the same way, the issue of racism was more opposed to people and was more openly abused in the past compare to present. African Americans were mistreated, and were slaved for a long time, and they did not have any rights until the 18th century. In 1865 and 1866 Southern states passed a laws called "black codes" which was meant to limit the rights of black and segregate them from whites; however, during the 1865 African American believed that the process of reconstruction would bring equality. The main object of reconstruction was to help African Americans become equal citizens, but reconstruction failed to help them, because the Southerners were not willing to accept the laws that were placed to give rights to the African Americans.
Who is Rutherford B. Hayes? What did he do while in office? How well did he work with congress? How well did he work with foreign countries? How well did he help the American people? Did he keep the economy ordered and organized? Hayes was the 19th President of the United States, he only served one term as president from 1877 to 1881. He was involved in the ending of the reconstruction, the Dawes Act, The Great Railroad Strike, Colombia and the Monroe Doctrine, etc. Hayes tried to do things he thought was good for this country but little did he know it made things worst than what they already were.
Our founding fathers imagined a country full of freedom and opportunity. This divine objective, however, did not promise such to everyone. As our government today views the original documents made by our fathers, we come to realize that they did not specify all our questionable rights presently.
After the Civil War came to an end and the military conflict had ended, the Reconstruction period started, which was in many ways still a war. This vital battle was waged by radical northerners who wanted to chastise the South and Southerners who badly wanted to preserve their way of life. The Reconstruction period was a time of great pain and endless questions. What was to be the place of freed blacks in the South? Did Abolition mean that black men would now enjoy the same status as white men?9 At the dawn of the 20th century, nine out of ten African Americans lived in the South. Jim Crow laws of segregation ruled the land. The Supreme Court upheld the power of the Southern states to create two "SEPARATE BUT EQUAL" societies with its 1896
After the Civil War, groups like the Freedmen’s Bureau were set up by the government and educational opportunities, medical help, and other opportunities were offered to newly freed African Americans. Later, the United States Government passed the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, which granted protection and more rights to African Americans. President Abraham Lincoln had many visions for Reconstruction and planned the movement. However, he was assassinated before any change occurred. Although plans were made by the government to help newly freed slaves, a group called the Ku Klux Klan threatened others to turn against African Americans. Black codes and other laws were passed by states to limit the new rights of African Americans. Sharecropping was a system set up to provide a
The impact of the Reconstruction politically was negative even with the fourteenth amendment being passed. In document B “Black Reconstruction in America” ,written by Dr. W.E.B DuBois who was an African American who also was the leader of a African American group
The Reconstruction Era was a period in American history distinguished by the efforts of many to rebuild the South after the end of the Civil War. Following the end of the Civil War, the South was left in an abominable state. Railroad tracks were ruined, homes were destroyed and even previously large bustling cities such as Charleston, Richmond, and Fredericksburg were left devastated. Economically, the South continued to fall since Southern money was now useless. Because it was essential to repair the South and reunite the Nation, Lincoln started the Reconstruction (1865-1877). These efforts, however, were in vain since the Reconstruction was a failure. Black Codes, secret societies restricted the rights of Blacks and the South continued to
While the war is over, there’s still tension between the states. Why? Because of Reconstruction. Reconstruction was the idea to rebuild the South after Sherman’s March to the Sea. Reconstruction caused positive things such as African American rights. But, there were some negatives. As the plan died out, it caused more and more tension between the country. Why did this happen? Because of Southern resistance and Northern neglect. Who ended reconstruction, though?
The group of people most affected by the revolutions of Reconstruction was without question the newly emancipated slaves. There is no doubt that the liberation and ensuing reforms were serious improvements in the lives of black people in the United States. For the first time since they had been brought to the colony of Jamestown, blacks were allegedly granted, at least in principle, the same freedom as whites. Even though some of these new rights did not afford much real-world independence at the time, the end of the institution of slavery and its barbaric treatment of the captive blacks should not be dismissed. With the solidification of the Thirteenth Amendment, paired with Lincoln’s Freedman’s Bureau, the United States began to distribute
What, when, where, who, and how did reconstruction end. Who caused its downfall? Reconstruction is a period of time after the civil war were the states who left the union formally rejoined the united states again. The slaves were set free and given right within the government such as the right to vote and to be formally known as a citizen. It all fell apart due to the north and the south. The north did not want to deal with the resistance of the south any longer and give up. Who was more responsible for the downfall? Even though it was push and pull from both sides I believe the north is responsible for the
