The Epic Of Beowulf: A True Hero

Beowulf was an immense poem about a courageous warrior - by the name of Beowulf. This warrior was brave and had a lot of confidence, which led him to act foolishly. Beowulf was respected by the people of Denmark and Sweden. Throughout the poem, Beowulf proved he was a hero by protecting the Geats and Danes, but also foolish with the beasts he defeated. Beowulf acted like a proud fool when he was on his way to kill Grendel’s mom. Beowulf had to lower himself into a monster infested lake, with only the protection of a mail shirt, to get to her in the first place. “Only Beowulf would risk his life in this lake… But Beowulf and fear were strangers; he stood ready to dive into battle" (Page 64). Today, a hero is a brave and selfless individual who helped during the September 11th attacks. Out of all the people that died during September 11th, over 400 were first responders. “Over 2,600 people died in the World Trade Center and its vicinity, including a staggering 343 firefighters and paramedics, 23 New York City police officers and 37 Port Authority police officers who were struggling to complete an evacuation of the buildings and save the office workers trapped on higher floors” (“A History of the 9/11 Attacks”). These people are considered heroes because they risked their lives to save others. Facing death was something that probably scared them, but they cared more about the trapped, helpless people inside. Beowulf and the 9/11 responders are similar because they protected people. Beowulf was both a hero and a proud fool. This was demonstrated by his actions throughout the poem. Beowulf was not a hero when compared to the responders of the 9/11 attacks, because they risked their lives for the safety of others whereas Beowulf only risked his life for rewards that followed, this made him
