Throughout history, women have been able to influence and the world around us. Whether it’s from a political view or at home taking care of children, women have influenced and affected the world in many ways. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Daisy, Myrtle, and Jordan’s social positions and interactions help them to influence and, sometimes, overpower the world around them, displaying the greater effect of women. Women are able to influence others through the simple effect of their voice. Daisy Buchanan, the cousin of the narrator Nick Carraway, is married to Tom Buchanan, a wealthy and strong man who was in the same social club as Nick while they were both at Yale. Myrtle Wilson, Tom’s lover and also wife to George Wilson, a garage owner in the valley of ashes, is part of the lower class. While Tom picks up Myrtle from the train station, Nick notices something different about her. Myrtle has “changed her dress” and it “stretched tight over her rather wide hips” (27). Nick notices that Myrtle has displayed her sexuality, which is able to help her sway others into thinking she is a very pleasing women. Although Myrtle is poor with her husband, she tries to fit in with the upper class. While conversing in the apartment that she and Tom stay at occasionally, her neighbor, Mrs. McKee, states that she likes Myrtles dress and thinks “‘it’s adorable,’” but Myrtle “rejected the compliment” and responded by stating that “‘It’s just a crazy old thing’” and will only “‘slip it on’” when she doesn’t care what she looks like(31). Myrtle acts like the dress is no big deal at all. Instead, she proceeds to act as if she has more stuff that makes her look good, displaying her attempt to fit in with the upper level class.
