As the 20th century progressed… Prime among the Southern revisionist history was the sentimental Lost Cause interpretation of faithful slaves and a virtuous South oppressed by Northern tyrants prior to and after the war.” (Winsboro) As ridiculous as this claim seems it’s prevalent to many Lost Cause believers. Misinformation, myths, and lies is the hallmark of the Lost Cause narrative. Amy Heyse in an article for the Southern Communication Journal demonstrated how “…the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) encouraged members of the Children of the Confederacy to participate in their definition of the “Southern people” through the rhetoric of their catechisms.” (Heyse) The catechisms section is listed under the Children of the Confederacy section on the UDC website and it states “Catechisms are a part of the culture and history of the CofC. Members are encouraged to recite basic beliefs and elements of Confederate history.” These “beliefs and elements are not listed on the website and must be ordered, however the inference the website makes is that there is another history that they offer to children to indoctrinate them into another view of our nation’s history. This is not what one would expect from a benevolent and patriotic organization. One would assume that with all of this easily accessible public information only a “Google” search away that there would be an outcry to have all memorials and monuments glorifying the Confederacy removed immediately, unfortunately
