Reflection: The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood tells the story of a woman living in a society run by extremist misogynistic Christians through different points in her life, the past, the present and the time in-between during the beginning of the revolution. She is a handmaid, which is basically a reproductive slave and we know her only by her slave name Offred. Although the characters are easy to relate to and the plot is easy enough to understand, I still felt like I was missing key details as to what is really going in the Republic of Gilead, we are only given bits and pieces throughout the novel. Although her circumstances are extreme and by no means close to anything I’ve experienced first hand the underlying theme of women being lesser than men and the ridiculous amount of laws, or in my case social rules backed up by an old book is similar. One of my clearest memories of prejudice among the supposed ‘loving’ Christians is my Grandad, who’s father was a reverend and I would consider one of the least extreme Christians I’ve met, remark after seeing the Toronto Pride Parade on the news, his exact words were “They should all be shot.”. Of course there is an generational factor in this statement, but my own Father, again someone I would describe as less extreme than most, although he words it in a little more palatable way still shares a similar opinion. A person who is extreme enough to fight their way into a position of power, is probably extreme enough in their beliefs to impose laws similar to what we see in the novel. Christianity and other religions like it, has hurt women and anyone else who isn’t a heterosexual cis-male since they began, although today we see new, more open minded denominations appearing, there are still more extreme groups that continue to hurt people both on small and large
